Not really, as far as i can tell. Being at war will affect your ability to get your enemies to defect to your superior empire (they won't - you must be at peace). One tactic is to seize key worlds within a target empire, sue for peace, destabilize, and watch em flip. (Seizing the producing worlds lessens their ability to produce ships, and greater lowers their influence. Once you have the most influence over that sector, the AI worlds within can defect if their morale is low enough.). Kinda

Ah, aren't they cute? :) Seriously, play how you want. I do.
Yeah, what is this Death Knight? Finally, a justification for the righteous path of evil! (JK) [Message Edited]
I havn't had any GTDs in thhis game. In another game (not the GOTM) from another computer I can't even get it to load, despite using (i think) the same build. Also I can't build anti-matter missiles, so i think somewhere the computer thinks I didn't register...Maybe my copy is FUBAR again and I'll try to reinstall, after i finish the GOTM. Actually my game is going pretty boring. Almost there. I won't be able to have a decent score I don't think. Get this. I was on pretty good terms with t
I think one thing that helped me is not making so many productive planets. I only have a few planets producing capital ships, wonders, and TGs. In these sectors and planets I put all my +manufacturer bonuses, via starbase or via buildings. Why? Becaus you have to pay for that extra production, at least some of it. And if your planet is sitting there producing nothing, you really don't want it to be pumping out 400 bc worth of production into thin air. You'd rather waste, say 40 bc than 400
Pontius: I hold your person in the highest (and I really mean that) respect. You and all the other GROSSers, and in fact most people on this forum. I never attacked you, but pointed out some issues I had with the GROSS empire. It's not a big deal, to me. I agree I'm not score monster, never wanted to be. Don't want the game to get too stale too quickly. The unfortunate fact that my switch made the difference between GROSS and the Fellowship, is just that, unfortunate. Anyway, yo
Cypher: Fully agree with you Pontius: If anything this should put the wind back in your sails. I look forward to crossing sheep with you someday. It was fun but GROSS has stagnated quite a bit lately, as usually happens in empire building...It's one thing to take first, it's another thing to keep it. Until we meet again.
Lovely poem Michael :)
Hello fellow Fellowshipers. I claim the responsibility of removing GROSS from their high throne, where they sat in glory once, but are now a decayed and corrupt empire. I am Gibbie, a dark elf from the underworld, and I confess to be a scaliwag on occassion, and on other occassions a dark sorcerer. I predict glory and conquest for the Fellowship! As there is only one ring to rule them all, there is only one Fellowship.
Gibbie doesn't feel that he has much in common with the GROSS empire. This is a trend that should be carefully monitored. He remembers the good old days when we were really evil and ruled the galaxy with an iron fist. Now, the GROSS empire is mostly a bunch of happy-go-lucky alcoholics who pretend they are pirates, only soft, fluffy, squezable pirates. Gibbie wonders how we got to be so soft and cuddley. Gibbie has been pondering for some time and has decided to join the F
cit: That's a good idea. I'll try it, if i can get them to stop shooting at me long enough :) It's true, Y and Z are not allied (Torian and Arcean i think). The alterians just have to be taken out though. They are too goody-goody to live. :)
I was thinking of the alternative to the ally w/ 3 (arc, alt, tor), you could maybe possibly ally with the Drengin/Yor and play evil. Evil is much funer than playing good IMO. Never tried to do this but it would be interesting. Drengins always seem to love me (below me militarily) or hate me (above me militarily), because I am usually quite an evil guy. :)
Hey all. Lets see, lots going on here. 1) Regarding college and academic life. Pontius is very right on regarding research/teaching. I wonder where he gets his knowledge, he must have been in the loop at one time or another. For me, I am at U Texas Houston working on my phd (piled higher and deeper) in biomedical science. So again he was right on. Undergrad is nothing but busy busy busy. Grad is a bit better but it's alot easier to lose your hair and sanity. At least i can go h
Hey guys don't worry about any slighting. I don't really give a rat's behind. Ray - I'll think seriouslly about your offer, it's tempting, and I am feeling somewhat out of the GROSS camp anyhow. Started playing the GOTM last night. Without spoilers, the victory conditions specify that the most number of races surviving will be a important factor in scoring. And you can't gift planets. Okay, fine. But i can see that at least two races will probably surrender to the other majors u
Hyena: the planetary effects from invasion only work if you actually take the planet. I use this as a cheese tactic all the time: take a transport or two, invade with core detonators to reduce the defense. Invade with regular invasion tactic and take the planet. Walla. :) Your alliance idea made me think of another odd thing. The two allies of the Alterians (who originally declared war on me) did wait a while before attacking. It wasn't until I had my ships at the Arceans planet be
B Garrett, are you from hawaii? (lucky guess). My dad lives there. Anyway your morale is not so good, therefore you lose the elections. Try the following (in any order/combo). Decrease taxes to 35% or so. I find this number to be ideal. Build morale planet improvements Build morale trade goods (ie Frictionless clothing) Find morale resources and mine them (the yellow things on the main map) (If you are desparate) build a colony ship at high population planets and ei
Heh. Thanks for the suggestions all, they are all excellent. Raychua, I do have a save game. Do you want it? Email me ([email protected]) or let me know a way to get it to you. I played a bit more of the game today, I misspoke, I was only 2 turns away from Dreadnaught. Big difference :) I did the following: 1) Start all my trade with Caratinoids, who were buried in the upper right sector (I was in the upper right quad myself). 2) Marshalled everything I had
Hey all. I guess i thought I knew just about everything in this game, then this situation comes along. I am playing on Intelligent, medium map, abundant planets. I got a bad start position; in the corner with only 7 colonizable planets. My alignement is evil, and I am about 24 months away from dreadnaught tech (currently researching it). I did fairly well until the Alterians beat everyone to Dreadnaughts and started producing them. Then the Arceans, Alterians, and Alexians get in
Uhmm FWIW I'm not part of Ray's crew and i edited the Guide. But it was Ray's idea that we needed such a thing. So, you are right about his vision. Something that my empire doesn't really aspire to. But I'm too evil to join any empire besides GROSSS :)
Err one more thing, i tend to specialize my planets. Good planets (PQ 20 or better) are production machines, so at the best planet I will build all the +manufacture improvments and manuf. capital and hyperion manuf. plant and whatever else I can find. I use these to build capital ships and especially wonders and trade goods. On planets that give me good +research or + starship bonuses, I note it by changing the name of the system to Name (R2) or (S2) if the improvement is in the second planet
Don't forget the military resources. Be sure to get a constructor over them asap. General economy issues. Don't build those useless buildings (news, embassy), unless you are having a hard time with culture influence. Every building has a purpose, don't just build them all. I usually build in early game: Soil improvement, Entertainment, bank, Manufacturing Center, Anti-matter power plant (not fusion - it's too expensive in maintenance). Really you don't need alot of this stuff, exc
I think people look at GalCiv and say, hmm, why is it not multiplayer like 99% of the games out there (99% is an inflation, but you get my point). And they ask why. It's a good question. Brad told us why many months ago, but obviously not everyone was around then (new blood is always a good thing). So, in a nutshell, it's too hard to convert GalCiv, which was meant soley for single player, into a good multiplayer game. IT would have to be a new game, i think just to justify the hu
Seems to me we can already somewhat make trade embargos by shooting down the mini-freighters. And the AI does handle this quite well. Maybe that's the reason why there will be no AI for embargoes.
I'm glad people are actually reading the guide :) In ref to #17, the event is usually something about a diplomatic blunder leading to war. BTW i've included all your nice comments here in the next version of the guide, to be released after the expansion pack. Rob
I've gotten XCOM and TFTD to 'work' on XP out of the box, but no sound :( My POS soundcard SB Live doesn't even have DOS drivers. What were they thinking? So w/o sound it's not all that fun. Also scrolling is a real problem. You can use the program moslo to slow it way down. Also i couldn't execute the main.exe file, I had to use go.com, which launches the game itself. You can get the version 1.2 patch which removes copy protection. Good luck! Wish i could fix the sound, but no joy. Ev
