Hi Marco, So to confirm, it seems to have solved your issue?
Dr W - Fences Support
Very helpful, thank you. Based on what I'm seeing & reading here (1) yes we'll definitely be getting this figured out together 👍 (2) would it be possible for you to save a backup while it's in the "incorrect" state? I can see your config here, but everything looks proper. So I'm wondering what the config looks like when it's broken, and what the log looks like right after it has broken. So next steps: Next time it loads up in correct, immediately head
Thanks for the report in return; glad it’s resolved!
Hi Marco, looks like you're on Fences 5. Good news, I think we have a fix available for you! Please give this a try: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/gk3k3vc6wpiqjcktvod1q/UpdatePatcher_Debug_2024_12_21__9_51_10_pm.exe?rlkey=02mihpgsgcpr5dy3wsx3d0m8a&dl=0 Be sure to say yes to "Restart explorer" in the end. Hey Todash, happy new year. Just checking in to see if reordering issue has been resolved? Sounds like some other users have had success, so hoping it works for you as well.
Happy holiday in return!!
DrJBHL, Any guesses as to why it does that? Ie anything we can do on our end? Is there any switch in IOBit that can be turned off that resolves, so perhaps our support team can document it for future people?
Hi! So it looks like you’re using the software IOBit to keep your apps up to date, and it is malfunctioning. Do you have any idea what your settings are in IOBit that might be causing this to occur? (Screenshots likewise?)
Aye, ok sounds good! Hope you can and if so use that option to increase odds of capturing the crash dump. Appreciate it.
Hrm. So far I have now created a shortcut to an invalidated location on an unmapped network share, and done a whole bunch of combinations related to what you've put there. Unfortunately nothing. Could you try turning on "Enable advanced logging" from this menu here, and then after the crash, seeing if it generated a crash dump?
Hi Todash, we think we may have isolated and fixed the "Icon Reordering" issue you mentioned. If you get this, feel free to try this patcher, which will update you to v5.87 (Revision 4). Hopefully this takes care of the issue! https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/gk3k3vc6wpiqjcktvod1q/UpdatePatcher_Debug_2024_12_21__9_51_10_pm.exe?rlk
Wow, this is some precision, thank you. So please clarify – was that shortcut on the desktop, or within a folder portal? The problem occurs when there's a shortcut pointing to an invalid location. The invalid location happens to be, from the sound of it, within your Dropbox folder, which is something like c:\users\username\Dropbox\somethingsomething Does this sound about right? Though it did sound like perhaps the problem began and only occurred when you added Dr
Thanks for this. So I'm not seeing the relevant info here unfortunately, could you share more from Process Explorer? For example, on my machine here: upon double click: This shows me that Explorer executed MSEdge which executed F
Hi lsma, If you'd like to debug the issue, please download the tool https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer and share a screenshot. We'd like to see what the execution tree looks like for the setup process, and also, importantly, the location of the setup file. The location of the setup file will likely be a big hint, and will likely help us be able to so
Good to go!
Perfect! So we may have a solution baking for this internally. Give this a try: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/gk3k3vc6wpiqjcktvod1q/UpdatePatcher_Debug_2024_12_21__9_51_10_pm.exe?rlkey=02mihpgsgcpr5dy3wsx3d0m8a&dl=0 This update patcher will update your existing installation in-place, no restart required. You can
Hi thor220, thanks for the report. I'll have a bunch of questions here, but first one – does this happen every time or just sometimes? If just sometimes, does it happen enough to where you can reproduce it if you try? Or is it fairly rare... once a day or less. It's the icons within the Fence groups that are scrambled, yes? And do you have one monitor or more than one.
Yikes. lsma, can you use the tool https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer to screenshot the process tree, as well as a screenshot of the installer launch itself? Looking to see if it gives any hints about who is the parent process of the setup. None of our update mechanisms auto launch the installer, so, working to see what's going on there. Also, please
We're working on a resolution to the duplicate entries in Add Remove Programs for a future update, but, their existence is harmless, and the extra entry can be ignored. For those experiencing duplicate entries, you can use regedit.exe and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Stardock Fences 4 and delete that key, which will remove that duplicate entry from the Uninstall list.
Hi Fencessetting, yes happy to ook into this for you. Please send in your debug logs? Per instruction (1) Turn on Advanced Debug Logging, from the Troubleshooting menu in About. (2) Reboot (3) Reproduce the problem several times (4) Upload a report using "Create Error Report Package" and follow the on-screen instructions. Thank you!
Hi Mark, I received your logs, thanks for sending those in. So to confirm – have you experienced the problem since installing Fences 5? I can confirm that you are indeed running 5 and only 5 – the extra entry you might be seeing in the uninstall area was just the installer having trouble removing the previous entry it seems like, but 5 installs on top of 4, and only 5 is installed and running. I think Xfade81 was just referring to restoring the la
Hi Mark, can you capture and send us your debug log? This definitely should not be happening. Steps (1) Enabled "Advanced Debug Logging" from Troubleshooting in About (2) Reboot (3) Capture the issue a few times (4) Select "Create Report Package" from Troubleshooting in About, and follow the on screen instructions to upload. We'd love to take a look at what's going on. Thanks for the help. If you can't reproduce the proble
Hi Todash, Just writing to see if the "icon reordering" issue persists for you. We've seen a few users report this now, so we're wanting to get to the bottom of this for people experiencing it. If it is – it is always when coming back from being away for a while? I.e. if you turn your monitor off, wait, then turn it back on, might that reproduce? Do restoring backups resolve the issue? (Also, what version of Windows? 23H2, 24H2 etc exact build number from WinVer?)</
Hi Arutha_conDoin, Would love to do some more debugging with you on this one. Is it possible to confirm above that "Store my layout on a per-monitor-configuartion basis" is selected, per above? Also, there is an updated version available that could help with this – v5.86. Please give that a try and confirm the "Store my layout on a per-monitor-configuartion basis" – if still broken, would be great to dive in deeper with you on this, if you're able to spend any
