Perfect! So we may have a solution baking for this internally. Give this a try: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/gk3k3vc6wpiqjcktvod1q/UpdatePatcher_Debug_2024_12_21__9_51_10_pm.exe?rlkey=02mihpgsgcpr5dy3wsx3d0m8a&dl=0 This update patcher will update your existing installation in-place, no restart required. Hi thor220, thanks for the report. I'll have a bunch of questions here, but first one – does this happen every time or just sometimes? If just sometimes, does it happen enough to where you can reproduce it if you try? Or is it fairly rare... once a day or less. It's the icons within the Fence groups that are scrambled, yes? And do you have one monitor or more than one.

Yikes. lsma, can you use the tool https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer to screenshot the process tree, as well as a screenshot of the installer launch itself? Looking to see if it gives any hints about who is the parent process of the setup. None of our update mechanisms auto launch the installer, so, working to see what's going on there. Also, please

We're working on a resolution to the duplicate entries in Add Remove Programs for a future update, but, their existence is harmless, and the extra entry can be ignored. For those experiencing duplicate entries, you can use regedit.exe and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Stardock Fences 4 and delete that key, which will remove that duplicate entry from the Uninstall list.

Hi Fencessetting, yes happy to ook into this for you. Please send in your debug logs? Per instruction (1) Turn on Advanced Debug Logging, from the Troubleshooting menu in About. (2) Reboot (3) Reproduce the problem several times (4) Upload a report using "Create Error Report Package" and follow the on-screen instructions. Thank you!

Hi Mark, I received your logs, thanks for sending those in. So to confirm – have you experienced the problem since installing Fences 5? I can confirm that you are indeed running 5 and only 5 – the extra entry you might be seeing in the uninstall area was just the installer having trouble removing the previous entry it seems like, but 5 installs on top of 4, and only 5 is installed and running. I think Xfade81 was just referring to restoring the la

Hi Mark, can you capture and send us your debug log? This definitely should not be happening. Steps (1) Enabled "Advanced Debug Logging" from Troubleshooting in About (2) Reboot (3) Capture the issue a few times (4) Select "Create Report Package" from Troubleshooting in About, and follow the on screen instructions to upload. We'd love to take a look at what's going on. Thanks for the help. If you can't reproduce the proble

Hi Todash, Just writing to see if the "icon reordering" issue persists for you. We've seen a few users report this now, so we're wanting to get to the bottom of this for people experiencing it. If it is – it is always when coming back from being away for a while? I.e. if you turn your monitor off, wait, then turn it back on, might that reproduce? Do restoring backups resolve the issue? (Also, what version of Windows? 23H2, 24H2 etc exact build number from WinVer?)</

Hi Arutha_conDoin, Would love to do some more debugging with you on this one. Is it possible to confirm above that "Store my layout on a per-monitor-configuartion basis" is selected, per above? Also, there is an updated version available that could help with this – v5.86. Please give that a try and confirm the "Store my layout on a per-monitor-configuartion basis" – if still broken, would be great to dive in deeper with you on this, if you're able to spend any

I might recommend Process Explorer in tree mode; unlikely it provides the answer but it may provide a hint at what process launched the executable, as well as the command line parameters. Agreed that the installer would never just launch on its own. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

Hm. Are you seeing a prompt for activation? It seems to be indicating there is no license file found. Can you share a screenshot of the folder "%programdata%\Stardock\Fences5" ? After sharing a screenshot, deleting the contents, then logging off and logging on might help. You'll get a prompt to enter your serial number, which will allow you to use the correct license.

Will need to think about the reordering issue. Definitely no options that would make that happen. I don't know that the "Enable advanced logging" would capture enough information to figure this out, but that + screenshots might get us closer. If the contents of your desktop are private and you don't want to post publically, feel free to send me a DM instead and we can continue there. I don't know what's happening, but I'm curious to learn more

You can do this by selecting a group from the per-group-customization dropdown and then dragging the transparency slider to zero :) This is in the main customization pane in settings. You can also access this UI from the "Edit color..." dropdown, depending which version you are running Hope this helps! <img src="https://cdn.s

Hi Todash, Dismayed to hear of your issues! I hope we can get things working. A couple things to start maybe. (1) If you pull the top-docked fence away and then back, does it go back to being docked at the top? (2) It definitely should be checked, but, could you see if "Move titlebar to the bottom" is checked in "More options" in Customize? <img src="https://cdn.stardock.us/forums/6/50/650776/44d17e06-b53d-44f4-b64b-6cb70dee5d29.png" width="551" heig

Hi, yes and I can confirm we received it. However, I don't see any crash data in there. Perhaps let's try again, checking the option "Enable advanced logging" from the menu first, rebooting, then causing the crashing issue to occur. Then, unload another report package. We're looking for a file in the folder %appdata%\Stardock\Fences\TroubleshootingLog named fences_debug_snapshot.dat And so far, not seeing it. Hopefully the advance

Understood. Yes the issues are rare and when we diagnose with individuals we’re often able to resolve (it’s often machine specific). Hopefully you get a chance to reinstall a some point, and if so, feel free to send us a log. Had you purchased or were you on the trial?

Hi MrAdamski, Could you send us a report, which may contain a crash snapshot? You can use "Create error report package" from the Troubleshooting menu in About

Hi Paul, is it an advertisement for Fences 5 or an installation for Fences 5? Possible to show a screenshot?

Hi flowermoron, can you try sending us a copy of your debug log? Hard to know, but there might be some hints in there. 1) Enable advanced debug logging from the Troubleshooting menu in About 2) Reboot 3) Recreate the problem several times, to ensure the problem is captured. Change resolutions, restore backups, etc, do whatever causes t

@cnewman402 – technical limitation. But, something we're actively interested in exploring down the road. Just would be very difficult to pull off for a relatively narrow use case. Would it help if Fences could auto-convert a Fence into a folder (move the files into a subfolder), which then became a folder portal?

Hi Chongzhou thanks again for the suggestion. While making a change to the UI itself will be much trickier, we've added a new feature for an upcoming version that should help. Starting with Fences v5.87 and onward, when you click the up arrow, it will remember the position the up arrow was in last so long as your mouse doesn't move a significant distance. This means that so long as the mouse does not move too much, even if the up arrow moves, clicking again in the same po
