So just noticing – any reason you're not using this (new default) setting? We're looking at fixing the issue you pointed out as well with the legacy system and are taking steps based on your log, but you might see better results with this option. Curious if using that option resolves the issue in a way that's satisfactory.

Hi Wild4fire, I think this may be one we can only get a closer look at with advanced logging, if you wouldn't mind sending us a report. Steps are, open up the About dialog and select Enabled Advanced Logging, log out / log back in (or reboot) – then begin doing the steps to reproduce the issue. Reproduce & fix it several times over if you can, include doing things like restoring backups to attempt to fix, etc. Try to document it the best you can the steps you're taking,
Hi bert, I'm wondering if you could send us some advanced error logging. Might help us figure out what's going on. Screenshots will help as well! Whatever you can do to help narrate the issue. (Names of the Fence groups that are correctly showing up and/or missing are helpful too.) From the About screen, enable Advanced logging then log out / log back in, or reboot. Then, do stuff to try to reproduce. Restore a snapshot or two, turn monitors on and off, and do your best to document th
The perpetual license price reflects the strong recommendation that users go with the subscription so that they may stay up to date with an ever-changing Windows 11 (in addition to supporting development of new features, fixes, etc). The perpetual is available for users who insist on a perpetual license even if it's going to cost more + with less support. It's an illogical option for sure.
Hi mgwood, thanks for uploading the report. On first pass, I'm not seeing any specific problem. Can you describe more – and pasting in screenshots to help narrate if you can – of what the behavior you're seeing, verses the behavior you wanted/expect? We can then go inspect your logs and see if something is not lining up. Thank you.
Hi lucidrenegade, thank you for writing. Microsoft has been making rapid, significant changes to the operating system's user interface layer and there have been numerous breaking changes. These changes don't generally break the app "in full", but rather, some specific features & integrations have been impacted. A couple that come to mind: * "Peek" on Fences 4 for most users will not work with 24H2, as we had to completely rearchitect this feature's mechanism of action
Hi - yes no so this message is just saying a reboot is required. This message is only shown if Fences has been installed or uninstalled that session. The message is different if the machine has been rebooted. Please reboot your machine, and see if it gives you a similar error message, or if the problem goes away? Thank you!
My mgwood, could you please send in a troubleshooting report? You can access this from the Troubleshooting menu on the About page. We'd be happy to look into it further. We recommend: (1) Enable advanced logging, reboot (2) Reproduce the problem. Several times if possible, so that it can be clearly seen (3) Use the "Backups" feature to take backups before and after the "reproduction" step. You can access this from the "Layouts" panel, after tapping Rest
Yikes! Can you send us an error report so we can take a look? Troubleshooting link, Create error report package. No need to turn on advanced logging for this one I think.
Hi @paulgerke, @rkatuna28 @all quick question- I'm wondering if you have the same screen resolution & DPIs on these different machines you want synced, or the same? Is their monitor configuration identical or different?
Possible to share screenshot? I'm not with the installer team but can try to look into it. Assuming you've uninstalled the app, try navigating %programfiles(x86)%\Stardock\Fences and deleting any files leftover there. If any files are locked, should be able to rename the files, and then on next reboot they won't be locked / you can remove them.
Hi hpeach, I see you've installed the updated version, but there seems to be a problem with the installation. Was the system rebooted after installation, or just logged off/on? I'm seeing a mis-match of version so the files in the log you shared. It seems the version loaded is an old version. It's likely you'll get a message box telling you this if you open the Fences Settings dialog. Can you confirm? Thank you! (If you haven't rebooted, please reboot.</
Hi, yes— it is not as automatic as you might hope, but if you double click the headerbar, it will toggle rollup being enabled. So, double click when you want to keep open, then double click again to close. I hope this helps.
Sounds good, let us know! 🤞🙌
Hi mickbadal– Dev team stepping in here. So it looks like the "Music Tracks" group, you have docked to the bottom rolling out from the taskbar – but when you start up, it has "moved up" and the rollup is all messed up. Correct? Agreed this is a bug; one we found occurred not in all scenarios (else obviously this would have been a rampant problem) but in some. I do believe this is something we have addressed recently, in a number of ways (there's a number of re
Hi hpeach, new build as promised https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.5.6-j140-Setup.exe Give this a try and see if it helps resolve the issue. You won't see improvement after the first reboot after the install, but thereafter. If still an issue please submit another report, but I'm really hoping/expecting this should fix. Thank you!
Right. I guess gotcha is it "prunes" this data at regular intervals. So (1) either files actually not present at that time, or (2) somehow they're failing to register. Going to solve by: if the parent folder doesn't exist, don't remove the entry. This pruning mechanism is meant to make it so that if you delete a file, and then you create a file of the same name at a later date, the old data isn't "hanging around". But, if the parent folder isn't there... then, all bets are off. <
🥳🥳 Glad to hear it. Thank you for the report! Cheers cheers
Hrm. Well according to this, your entire desktop folder is redirected to D:\Desktop, and it is indeed saying files are missing. So "pretty much always" -- if they're unplugged at any time, unfortunately with the current code, their entries would get zapped for being removed. But, interesting note on my end, that I should probably verify the drive can be accessed at all, before marking a file as missing! So that's something I'll take a look at. Sounds like you have a seper
The user report log has been uploaded.
Hi hpeach, got the log. This is very interesting. Not to give too much away but I'm seeing your desktop seems to be pointing at "D:\Desktop\", which is fine. What I'm seeing is the icons be put into the Fence groups, but them I'm also seeing the program notice that the files themselves don't exist (for some reason), and so clearing those entries. This is very confusing, as the app do
How can I start the installer without getting the "invalid start mode : archive offset" warning?
Hi @jaymitch23, I'm from the development team. I see you're working on some installation issues with the customer support team, but once you have those resolved -- we have a new installer that we'd like you to try that has some extra debug logging capability. It'll allow you to do a couple things. (1) Enable a new "advanced
secondmouse02 I'm sorry you feel this way, but if the program is not worth it to you then it's not worth it to update for you, and we understand. As others have shared, there have been many updates to Windows since then, and many compatibility updates have been made. Version 2 in 2016 has issues in Windows 11 here in 2024, a lot of work has been put in to update it to perform as it does today on modern operating systems.
Several HOURS! That's something. Could you try the latest internal build at: https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.4.5-j138-Setup.exe to share more? This copy has extended logging ability which will help collect data and send a report. (1) Uninstall, using the option to "keep your settings". Reboot. (2) Install the new version. Go to the About page and se
Yikes! Well, no way to prove a negative – but, you can try using the option in the bottom of the Welcome screen to disable Fences, reboot, and from then on Fences will not be loaded at all. Since it's intermittent, disabling doesn't make Fences the smoking gun, but perhaps you'll see it happens anyways and can narrow out. Or, find some correlation. We don't however do anything to modify the icon image list in any way however, so, this would be the first time in the 15yrs
Sounds good. Please let us know if you see the issue come back and we'll continue to look deeper. That should though be the end of it. (You installed, after reboot pressed "yes" to one of the User Account Control prompts, rebooted again, and the prompts were gone thereafter. Correct?) We find often that when this problem occurs, often the user has manually turned on this option as some sort of debug step. But it doesn't sound like you've done that here, so I'm wondering if some softwa
