Downloaded 1.1 yesterday to my gf's comp, which is even older than mine. Got a small fraction of the way through a medium/maso before it got unbearably slow. Delays every time I click on a ship. Playing a tiny rare now and even that is running sluggishly :( I guess the expansion is hardly any different. New techs are nice, but there's nothing really game-altering. The AI isn't much better than it was before--maybe there are some cheese fixes that I'm unaware of. I haven't used rally poi

And actually I would guess that the next "big strat" in the Metaverse is going to be knocking out huge numbers of tiny/rare/maso games. I would guess that with some practice you could learn to knock them out in an hour or two apiece.
By the way, I haven't found culture flipping such a big problem at Maso. Last time I played it, I colonised a class 15 planet early in the game after the AI had colonised a system with two class 16 planets in it. Somehow I managed to keep that planet from flipping, and when my influence bonus got high enough, I got his system to flip to me
Agree. I only have real trouble when the AI planet is actually sharing a sector with my own. If they're in adjacent sectors, then they
The IP trade even works without the huge diplo bonus (not quite as well obviously, but it's still effective given the negligible cost). It's one of several things that I consider unbalancing and don't do.
new thread in the forum discussing the desire for a maso strategy guide
and isn't that going well :notsure:
Let's post this again:
: arguing that the GCCG isn't cheesy, since I never said it was. I really doubt I've ever posted anything to that effect anywhere on this forum. The issue isn't whether the GCCG was or was not cheesy, but how you justify calling one thing a cheesefest and not another.
Thus I was not implying that it was cheesy, I was implying that it was puzzling that you called Downie's post cheesy.
This tells me you know your post w
Black Shade, in addition to tight clusters try going to rare stars. It will keep the AI from building up a huge amount of culture to flip you with. I suggest you start on a Tiny/Rare map and hit control-N until you have two yellow stars in your home sector. This solves many of your issues: you don't have to worry about expansion, since there will almost certainly be no free yellow stars, so you won't fall way way behind in tech. You will own your home sector and you won't have to worry
Typical cheap shot. I've come to expect it out of most of your gang. The Gccg was not cheesy. It was a way for beginners to keep up. And yes. I was one of the few higher level players defending it even though it was to my own detriment. I guess all you whiners can do is advocate a system to your own benefit whatever you perceive that to be at the time.
Fifty percent wrong, one hundred percent irrelevant. Irrelevant: arguing that the GCCG isn't cheesy, since I ne
defense was irrelevant to the rating
I think this changed a couple patches ago. And Corvettes are no longer a dead-end tech in 1.1. I *do* still think that bribes are more effective than a paper tiger military, but to each their own I suppose. [Message Edited]
It was a joke, Pontius.
Some would actually like to play a game rather than a robotic boring cheesefest Mathew
This from the man who passionately defended the GCCG...
There's a thead called "Maso Strategies" in the GC Strategies Forum that has all sorts of descriptions. Everything you need to know to beat maso is in there--admittedly not in a very organized fashion, but it's there. If I were to write a guide I would basically condense and organize the contents of that thread, and maybe one or two others. [Message Edited]
My last two submissions were old games that I played while my modem was down. I submitted them on my girlfriend's computer, which has a working modem. I had two more, but for some reason they wouldn't submit :/ Better than anomalous I suppose. I downloaded 1.10 to her computer this morning and will give it a try tonight or tomorrow.
What happened to the "Nightmare" level?
I'm basically done with my character--I'm waiting for her to give me my spells though.
Yup, unfortunate but true.
Hmm... I submitted my first game in over a month. It was worth 17,000 points. My metaverse score went from 77,000 to 102,000. This doesn't make sense to me--any thoughts?
Certainly I would agree that the current system is not realistic. Personally I would favor a system where each governor got its own set of sliders. But as you say, it's not our decision.
Well, sure you wouldn't HAVE to reprogram the AI, but if you didn't you'd leave it at a severe disadvantage over a human who used the new system to full advantage. The optimal strategy would be to specialize: you'd have some planets that do science, and devote 100% to research after building all the research improvements. You'd have a planet or two devoted to wonders and trade goods, and therefore building 100% social, with all the production boosters and with no research improvements whatsoever
It's been discussed many times. I think the main issue is the it would be difficult to reprogram the AI to use a more complex economic system efficiently.
and star density!
I guess I could probably hunt one down somewhere. Okay, all is not yet lost :)
Can't play the Xpack if I can't download it, and I imagine it will be too big to fit on a floppy.
I could email people my games and have them submit them =/ I have four (I think) maso medium/large games sitting on my hard drive. Of course I'd have to take them to work on a floppy disk because that's where I have internet access. And they'd probably end up anomalous because I played with various event mods and improvements and a technology or two that other people don't exactly match. The really irritating thing about this isn't the Metaverse (though that is a pain) but the fact that
Mil bases annoy them too, for obvious reasons
