Addendum to my previous post. Getting the tech lead isn't too hard since you can research along a different path than the AI. So, say you spend ten turns researching all the computer techs. Meanwhile the AI has researched a bunch of other stuff. Then just trade terra computers for all their other stuff, and you end up ahead because you have all these other techs you've kept to yourself.
I assume by colonizing you mean the lower lvl planets that the ais ignore. I'm impres
first batch of research after getting the yellow (comm, universal translator, & diplo) is the "green tech" (med, basic, improved).
A little optimization thing: consider not researching diplo, but trading for it. You'll probably be able to pick it up from a minor basically for free. The AI hardly values it for some reason.
Am I waiting too late to get the AI to war? Are you doing that with your green techs?
No to both. I do it later, typic

Once you have a lead in planets you can jump to a tech lead.
Also wondering if your colonizing TG/wonders strategy for culture bombing works well on small maps
Get Manufacturing Capital early, and you should be able to get almost all of the game's wonders and TG's.

You bribe them and trade with them. I've done a few games without ever building an offensive ship. It helps to bribe them to attack one another--this kills their mutual trade routes and forces them to send their trade to you, making them dependent on you. A high diplo rating helps make your gifts effective.
In civ, every movement point of the settler means a decision... Move or settle
This is a good point. You also had to balance production of military units and workers with your settlers, and figure out what the most efficient thing to do with your workers was. Games are about choices, and there aren't that many choices to make in the colonization phase of Galciv. Send your colony ships off and wait until they arive. Wooo.

If you get everyone to go to war with everyone else--at least in the early game--then you're the favorite trading partner of every race. This gets you a lot of cash--on small maps or rarer stars you should build up a big surplus even with 100% spending.
How is bribing the AI to fight each other cheese? Is it because they go to war too cheaply?
Yes--far too cheaply--and the other AI doesn't blame you for it. I think it should lead to a major downgrade in relations with the other AI involved.
Granted I have only played a couple of maso games, but how do you generate cash? The only way I can figure out how is through freighers/trade with starbase boosters. On maso I can't get cash for tech swapping like I co
anybody realize that if Cotal was still in the Fellowship, we would have the #1,2, and 3 players? Oh well, Cotal's an honorary member, so I guess we can still say that (sort of!)
If you can't beat 'em, pretend they've joined you. ;)

Oh, and the other cheese I use is control-N. I'd guess that I probably have already played a few games where I haven't used any those cheeses, except perhaps in the mop-up phase. Do you want me to maybe write up an AAR?
The only condition I'd add is that you don't use AMM's as they appear to be a pretty major cheese in and of themselves in that they overinflate your military rating and make killing other ships easier than it should since the ais don't use them
<br

Actually I'd say I could beat it with the only major cheeses used being the bribing AIs to war with each other and the tech trading exploit. A couple more handy cheese tactics, which I generally do not use, but which you might enjoy: Gifting 1 influence point can sometimes improve relations (this is the biggest cheese out there imo, though it seems that most people don't use it) Buying enemy starbases with cash, especially influence resource starbases. On a large map y

I (and I think many other people) have beaten maso without using those specific cheeses. I think I'd have to do some things I consider cheesy--like bribing AIs to go to war with each other, for example. But I think I have a much broader definition of cheese than most people do. I consider the trading exploits to be a cheese, too, though that doesn't stop me from doing it. [Message Edited]

Alternating between real work and gaming. I've been designing a hideously complicated system for the past week and I've gotten to the point where I just can't concentrate on it for more than an hour or two at a time. Yesterday was an 18-hour day :(
