Hey MP, good to see you. Just looked at Frogboy's story. Combine that with the Torian backstory: "Their power was allegedly innate, that is, they were able to create the things they needed instinctively as an extension of themselves. As a result, the Dread Lords had no need of industry or manufacturing." Could the Fellowship be distant, fallen descendents of the Precursors?

Black Shade: I interpreted "morale trouble" to mean low morale, like below 50. I guess you probably meant "morale that isn't 100." If so we agree. Andreas: based on this and your past posts, I think you're probably a more careful micromanager than I am. For me, I find the entertainment network is so cheap to build and maintain that I just throw it into my governor queue for everyone--it's just one or two turns of production. I think the cost of that is less than the cost of forgetting a

Generally not: the tidal forces would tear the smaller body apart. This is why the gas giants of our solar system have rings instead of extra moons--the gravity of the planet is strong enough that it keeps the rings from aggregating.

Instead of flushing population, try bringing the colony ships to some productive world. A high-PQ world with the right improvements can hold a vast population.

One thing: the more planets you have, the smaller the fraction of your income will come in trade. If you switch to rare stars and/or a smaller galaxy size you can fund your whole empire through trade. I've been in situations where I could set taxes to 0% and spending to 100% and still run a surplus. I would disagree with the above post: you should definitely build an entertainment network and a few other cheap morale boosters as well. Morale->more people->more tax income. I also would n

The AIs typically beat me to Diplomatic Translators. After you've played several games you get a feel for what the AI researches and how quickly. Ray's list is a good start (though I think they get to ZGR and IR farily quickly). Advanced Diplomacy, Instant Communication, and all the techs following Nano-Frequency Electronics are good ones to go for and trade. Depending on the techs involved and your diplomatic rating, you might need to get two or three techs in order to trade for that p

For masochistic games, I take Populists/+60% diplomacy/speed +1. The speed helps me get a colonization edge and the huge diplomacy bonus is essential for tech trading. I think diplomacy is the best pick--it can do everything. It can give you all the benefits of research (through tech trading) or economy (through trading for cash on most levels), it can buy you a military in a pinch, plus it gets you better relations in general.

I won a single-sector Masochistic game a while ago, and posted it in the Masochistic Strategies thread. It looks like it's relevant here, so I'll repost it. When I began this game, I did not intend to play single-sector. However, I got an amazingly good start for a single-sector game, and after playing a few turns I realized that if I was ever going to attempt it, this would be my best chance. It turned out to be surprisingly easy, probably the easiest win I have ever had on a masochist

For those who are interested I posted ages ago a full After-Action Report on a single-sector game I won on Masochistic (with the help of a *great* start). On lower difficulty levels such a good start wouldn't be needed. I'll repost it in the Strategy forum single-sector thread. [Message Edited]

An actual plausible answer might be that you're looking at the earth through a reflecting telescope. Many astronomical telescopes use sets of mirrors to collect and focus light, which, depending on the specific type of telescope, can lead to upside-down and mirror-reversed images. Indeed these types of telescopes are more common than the lens-based refracting ones that most people are more familiar with. [Message Edited]

I HATED the Ents in the movie. They were my favorite part of the books--wise and strong and sad--and the movie reduced them to idiot comic relief. The scene with Aragorn riding off the cliff was not in the books. Nor was Faramir instantly corrupted, nor did the elves go to war, and so on. I don't mind deviations from the source material in principle, but I don't see why these additions (and the concurrent subtraction of Tolkien's stuff) improved the movie.

I have no idea why I'm a Veteran. The only change that I can see is that you get access to a new forum, the "Galactic Council." This is no great reward, since that forum has had three posts in the last month, one of which is a question that was never answered, and the other two relating to the "geek test." Maybe the Diplomats and Ambassadors get something better.

LOL I must say the scorched earth thing is really really annoying (gotta rush build a colony ship to offload population, which gets repetitive), and often counterproductive for the AI. It destroys its own cultural resistance buildings for example. I have presumed that the point of this behavior is to diminish the value of the worlds that the human will soon gain. The problem with this is that the AI is effectively conceding victory at this point. Since it's not building any c

Don't worry, Bluesteel, it's nothing to do with you. Briefly, Ray and Pontius got into an argument about the Metaverse and the scoring system, and in the course of that argument Pontius made some comments about Ray that some people have said is "name-calling" and that Pontius calls "observation." Personally I think Pontius is in the wrong here, but if you want to read it yourself the relevant posts are on page 44.

You can trade for and use alignment-specific techs even if you are of the "wrong" alignment. You can find your alignment in the "stats" tab, under "society," in the domestic policy screens.

Wow, no one mentioned the autopilot cheese! This is essential to make Alpha Strike work in some situations. You can move your ships right into an enemy's sector as long as they're set to autopilot out of it at the end of the turn. So you can move your fleets right next to the enemy planets--just use up their movement points and set them on autopilot out of the sector, and the AI won't even peep at you. Then the next turn, cancel your autopilot orders and take over the enemy planets.
