Ideally, you should have way more than enough troops & transports to conquer the planet, and also seed it with a respectable population (~3 billion). War-time is usually not ideal, though. But if you can, you get to reuse the transports you used to ferry that extra population. When I play, if I'm in control of things, I spend a little extra time building a few extra transports, and also during that time research the soldiering techs. Neglecting the soldiering techs is a great way to wreck y

Currently, I'm in the final mop up stage of a v1.2 gigantic everything abundant game with ~500 planets and 9 opponents, at level Suicidal! So, Masochrinthus (you don't mind if I call you Masochrinthus, do you?)--do you have a job? :O Go to school during the day? Do you recognize what that big bright thing is in the sky during the daytime? With that level of patience, I suggest a career in accounting for you. Or pro golf. Or work for my ex-b
When my population starts to hit 20B, that tells me it's about time to send in a cruise ship and whisk some of them away.
I like spore ships as they are. But if there's room for improvement, go for it.
I don't think it's lame, I just think it belongs in the off-topic forum (where it got moved to).
I name my ships much as I would name variables in a computer program. So I've got names like: surv5ls3 (speed 5 surveyor, 3 life support) cargweap7 (cargo hull, 1 of some kind of weapon, speed 7) troop3x2ls1 (troop transport, speed 3, 2 troop modules, 1 life support) advtroop5x3 (advanced troop transport, speed 5, 3 billion troops) tiny1misssp2 (tiny hull, 1 missile, 2 speed) etc. etc. etc.
I always rush throught the engine tree to Impulse III before the end of the colony rush. Though I usually don't finish impulse III until the colony rush is almost done survey ships can then take advantage of the speed (survey ships with speed between 12 and 16). I usually get about 1/2 of the anomalies on a common anomaly setting with 5 opponents. I think its a huge advantage (especially if you have the creative pick and hit a lot of the civilization graveyards), plus
The numbers have never added up right on that screen, ever since the days of Galciv1. It looks to me like the "Ship Maintenance" item is wrong, in more ways than one.
The usefulness of the influence bonus tiles varies depending on the density of your maps. If it's dense, the influence is most definitely useful. And it doesn't have to be on your borders--when flipping, the game somehow takes into account your civilization's overall influence. It affects your diplomacy as well. If you're on a sparse map, lots of life support, well--influence isn't so great. Just build the Restaurant of Eternity (like Iztok said) and be done. That is, unless influ
Another good use for those Advanced Troop Mods.
Yeah, the Korx (Super Trader) should have far more routes. They should have a super ability, not just give them all the starting techs.
> - explore and colonise, use the Flagship mainly for anomalies (avoiding wormholes) Now there's a good tip. Make the AI search out the wormholes. You know there is one other hugely underrated aspect of managing your economy: how much population you load onto your colony ships! I try to spread my population evenly throughout all my planets (except the really low PQ ones), but that is hard to do when you're still colonizing. But at the same time, the entire time y
These quirks of the economy which you all mentioned don't bother me. I remember in Galciv1 the manufacturing was a function of population and planet quality, and it sure made for some useless planets that took an awful long time to develop.
In my books the Eyes are not the best wonder, and not the worst.
> How do I convince the Senate to let me go to war? Lie to them and the public about uranium shipments. Oops, wrong Senate....
One thing I would like to see is have the ability to create a trade ship from one planet, send it to another planet I own, and THEN send it to whomever I want to trade with, so I could choose better where I want trade routes established, other than just the planet that made the trade vessel (another feature request). Unless this is possible already? I see the problem there, from a programming standpoint. Some planets have a +Starship bonus. Those shi
Or at least not develop just any new colony. Some you do (like if it has valuable bonus tiles, or it's a critical forward outpost where you need to be launching new colony ships from).
I really enjoy the 25% research, too, but I NEVER use it on Planetary Improvements. That 25% is going to an expensive tech, like Impulse, Planetary Invasion, Xeno Ethics, Star Federation, etc.. I try hard not to waste it on a cheapo tech. I agree, Galactic Guide Book wins the "most useless Galactic Wonder in the game" award.
> * People have talked about "not building ships in the starport so more resources go towards income". However, whether I'm building a ship or not, I see no net change in the costs associated with that planet. True, but check your spending slider screen. If you start/stop building something in your starport, you will see the treasury figure there go up/down. It's too bad it doesn't reflect on the planet spending screen too, though. > * If you end up in deficit spe
I don't usually take a big hit during war. I've gone all game being at war and didn't really care. What will wreck your economy, though, is if you're making massive invasions and you haven't researched all the soldiering techs. That'll burn population like mad.
I've sold junk planets to the AI for peanuts. I figure those class-2's are a real drain on the economy and I can flip them back anyway, so might as well make it drain his economy--not mine. They make great white elephant gifts. I've also gotten planets from the AI as terms of a peace treaty. But they have to be far away from their home world.
Yay!! I finally got the Yor to ally with me! This is when I'm backed to the wall like a cornered rat, alliance is the only way you can win, I have conquered everybody but the Yor on a map you're not supposed to be able to conquer, and I'm sitting there doing nothing but hitting the "Turn" button over and over again and gifting him every colonization tech in the book.... Alliance is just not my thing, I guess.
I can't get aliens to close, either, and it's holding me up in the campaign game. I feel like I've done all the right things, too.
I agree, I see a memory leak. I was running only Galciv2 and was doing frequent save-and-reloads (due to a different bug), and I got the "Warning: your system is running low on Virtual Memory" message. The machine was getting really slow.
What would be great are some upgrades to the starbase that would increase it's effective range. I was thinking almost the same thing, I was hoping you could spend racial ability points to expand your starbases' radii (not just military)
