I am a big fan of military starbases (at least, on higher difficulty levels), but I do not believe in spamming them all over your influence zone, or waiting till late in the game to use them. You use military starbases early in the game, when their bonuses are most pronounced, and you wait till you KNOW you're going to use it before slapping it down. It's not doing you much good if it's just sitting there and no battles are happening.

Be that as it may, any reasonably democratic society usually frowns on 'unjustified' wars against allies. If you really care about realism (as oppossed to a realistic justification), make this one of the downsides to non-imperial governments. Some sort of penalty should be attached, though to balance out the huge, obvious advantage it gives to a player while still retaining the mechanical relevance of an alliance. I would agree if this were Civilization,

There have been a number of real-life scenarios where countries have backstabbed allies without morale penalties. Nazi Germany on Russia, Israel on Great Britain, Italy on Nazi Germany (well okay maybe that one had morale penalties), Russia on China....

If you are going to buy both a social project and a ship in a turn and you only have one planet, why not set spending to 100% research (instead of 50% social and 50% research)? In the case of social projects, you can buy a project and then immediately set your spending on the next project that same turn. This is unlike ships, where you have to wait a turn and all your military spending that turn gets wasted.

In my mind, Spore is just a form of Gas Warfare, that's all. But then again, we've got to re-think Gas Warfare--doesn't that only turn the planet Toxic, too? I mean, Mass Drivers and Core Detonation lowering the PQ, that I understand, but--Gas Warfare? I never use that tactic anyway.

Two more bugs that affect gameplay: 1) When I researched Intensive Farming (a.k.a. Xeno Farm II) and completed an Intensive Farm on the same turn, my food did not go up. We're talking an Intensive Farm, on a 300% Farm tile, and my food production was 6mt. Then when I decommissioned the farm (to start over), my food AND population went to -18 billion!!! I reloaded the save game and it went away. 2) If you have High Espionage on a guy and double-click on one of his planet

I get the herky jerky thing too, and it's sporadic. There's nothing going on in the background on my system. You select a ship and move it 5 squares, and the game makes a clicking noise 5 times and 'selects' the ship on all 5 squares. It's annoying, but because it's sporadic I can live with it. I can hit the 'Turn' button and it'll go away (until next time). I've gotten an even weirder problem where you click on a ship w/ 5 movement and it will move *HALF* a parsec and stop. We'r

On your first scenario, I think you've got a point. My point is just that it's space. You can be well into a civ's "sphere of influence", but you're still light-years away from the nearest planet. Having these borders that encompass millions of light-years^2 ... nah. This isn't Civilization. The Korath and Drengin could do war in your "territory" all they want, it won't affect you one iota.

Plus, in my opinion truth is a fickle friend. A double edged sword. It can win and arguement, as well as help you lose it. You're presuming that the object of an argument is to win, when in fact the object is to shed truth on the subject.

This talk does bring up one good way to take on Suicidal: start on Tiny maps, work your way up. I do that with everything I do. It's not about it being more difficult on larger maps, just more time consuming. You're not going to get better if it takes 3 days to see if your strategy works.

I like the way borders worked in CivIV better. Unless your allied (or something) you shouldn't be able to just move in warships. I can see that, but I can also see why Stardock did what they did. Because a) you don't want to turn Galciv into a Civilization wannabe, and b) it's space. Space doesn't particularly have borders. I think I heard someone (Brad, maybe?) say a long time ago that the planets are the borders. In other words, that's just your

But I think this is a dead horse as I myself and many, many others have voiced their concerns about the relative uselesness of starbases, specifically military starbases, and to my knowledge nothing has been done or even answered by the devs why starbases will stay in their relative useless and unimaginative state. Maybe it's because they're getting mixed messages from their user base. Many people are in my camp and believe they are useful.

I do like the idea of Spore being an invasion tactic, maybe an evil-only one. However, the deed is done, Spore is here now, and that seems like a major change in my mind.

wow. I say bingo for entropy's analysis: great players harness the AI's and exploit their superior production/research to make it their own... I agree with this, but there's ways other than just diplomacy to do that. You can tech steal, influence flip, etc.. This idea holds true for all kinds of computer games, like CnC where you use engineers to capture the AI's buildings, or Red Alert 2 where you use Yuri to capture the AI's units, or Age of Empires

There is very little you can do on defense, I *swear* by military starbases. Stick a military SB on HIS turf and defend that. You will slice through his fleets even with far inferior ships. And the idiot AI keeps rebuilding defenders even when you've got a fleet sitting right outside his orbit, so after the first wave you seldom even encounter fleets at all. Micro Repair Bots helps. That's where I'm different from the other strategies. I

One thing I will do during this event is jack my taxes way up. I don't care about growing my pop at this time, I just want the money (without losing the Senate in the process). I'll also grab any economic bonuses I can, like research Star Democracy. 10% of a lot is a lot. I'll also go hog-wild on rush-buying, to keep under 20000bc. My tech capital tends to get a LOT of improvement during this time! Then when the economy comes back to earth, I lower my taxes again and live off my 20

I think that was a great decision by Stardock. It enriches the strategic possibilities big-time, rather than just having junk planets that will never amount to anything (a problem going all the way back to Galciv1). I know, it's not one bit realistic--I mean after all, I don't care how many air conditioners you put on Venus, it will never be a nicer place to live than Earth. But I don't care.

Fourth - Hit early, hit hard. As soon as my diplomacy research is done, sometimes before it is done - I pick an empire I want to take out. Figure out what weapons they use, and build a fleet to counter. Count all of their worlds, and build enough transports to wipe out the whole civilization in one turn. You simply MUST take out at least one AI in the first year and a half or you won't have enough territory to compete with the enemy. When it is time to strike - DO NOT

But a market will always be more profitable than an embasy? Not always. I don't like every world to have either, but sometimes the embassy pulls in more on the bonus squares. And you've got the flipping, which is far more valuable in DA. I have heard this strategy sugested allot... i dunno what i'm doing wrong but i find little benefit to this strategy - the colony rush is usually mostly over by the time i get a

From what I saw, the 20% PQ ability does have an effect on upgradeable tiles--a negative one. It turns a PQ5 into a PQ6. Exactly what you don't want. Neutral is still a totally awesome alignment if you've got a lot of PQ1's and 2's. Otherwise they only drain your money and you spend all game soil enhancing your tiles (or you can just wait for Orbital Terraformer). I do make researching Habitat a priority in my games, particularly if I intend to go Neutral, because I want to
