This is idiotic. Suicidal was made 'impossible' because the AI is not longer handcuffed by the cheesy diplomatic system that was a huge player cheat and allowed it to made the ai act against its interests. To the degree that the AI now acts in its interests, the AI was improved; a simple, but effective fix. From any cursory glance of this thread, it would appear that you hold the minority opinion. The AI wasn't coded to act against anything, all they di

It would be interesting to see more threads of how people are doing mid-game economy, especially in 1.50X and if you're Good ethical alignment. How exactly do you handle flirting with the -500bc mark and turning your economy into the black?

I find the ethical choices in RL much more interesting. Say, this one: "You're in the middle of a game and your girlfriend calls asking what you want to do over the weekend. What do you tell her?" Good: Tell her it's a surprise. Get flowers, book reservations at a nice restaurant, go to the state fair on Saturday. Neutral: Go to dinner and a movie on Friday, but you would like a block of time on Saturday to yourself, because you like to play on the computer

Researching Xeno Entertainment and building Harmony Crystals are the best. Yellow mining resources and Ultra Spices are also good. Be sure you're upgrading those entertainment centers to multimedia centers, extreme stadia, etc.. The bonus from ent. centers isn't that big.

Of course, in part, I think the update was designed to ruin some of the strategies I posted in response to Brad's question as to how people were beating suicidal. I agree. I saw the Civ3 and Civ4 guys do exactly the same thing, and I'm disappointed. The devs for both games find out what you do to win the highest difficulties and then they patch the game specifically for that so you can't win; when what we really need is a better game. Like when pe

This patch effectively turned off several of the features of the game. Tech trading is basically gone, the whole concept of hit points and repair is basically obsolete with the new defense, and Suicidal is made impossible without particularly improving the AI. I liked the beta better than this.

I have never played with tech trading off before, in all my days of Galciv. I decided I'm just going to play that way now and have fun with it. It's working. My last game I just spore rushed everybody on Tiny map, abundant/abundant, Crippling diff, and that was loads of fun. Who cares that I'm at war with everybody--we're not trading anyway.... In fact, I may just do that: default al

All in all, its probably a good thing as diplomacy has always been cheesy, and is how people beat suicidal difficulty, which shouldnt really be winnable if its working right. The problem is, they're not really making the AI that much smarter--only making Suicidal unwinnable. There's a difference.

I thought as you undergo multiple rounds in a single combat, the defense gets subtracted by the attack roll? That's what I'm trying to find out: if you have 144/0/0 D vs. a 0/0/24 attack, and the attacker rolls a 12...do you lose no HP and the next round it's equivalent to 132/0/0 vs. 0/0/24? Or is it 0/0/0 vs. 0/0/24? That would make for two VERY different outcomes. Take the latter way first: Round 1: sqrt(144)/0/0. Attacker rolls a 12. -0 hp Round 2: sqrt(0)/

Whoa--if you have defense of the wrong type, how does it get subtracted? If you have 144 deflectors, and the AI hits you with a 12 mass driver attack, does it subtract 12 from that 144, leaving you with 132 the next go? That would make defense overpowered REAL quick. I would've thought it subtracted all 144.

I don't see what the big deal is with the Yor? 10 bonus points is the same as what most other races get. Their Super is nothing particularly to write home about.

I don't think it's overpowered (except maybe at the high-end). It just takes some adjustment to get it right. You just have to get used to ships having higher defense numbers than attack numbers--not the other way around, as we're used to. Two other nice side effects: Good alignment is better, and the whole thing with having the right defense type vs. the right weapon type means more. What *IS* a problem are the +15 hit-points techs (e.g. Reinforced Hulls, etc.). They are

I noticed an interesting phenomenon with the new Defense: Cargo warships make more sense. Their "hit points" are their defense. By the time you research the high-end Defense you will probably already have Medium hulls--which is basically the same amount of space--but upgrading other cargo ships to fight is starting to make sense now. I just upgraded 4 cargo ships to big 35att/35d, and they cleaned out 3 AI fleets and 5 planets without any other help.
