I've done several of the things mentioned here (such as ctrl-N). One other thing I'd do on tiny maps is save/load when colonizing planets to get a good/evil event. Not to get a specific event (e.g. a PQ one), just to get any one so I could define my morality. I thought of it as turning up the frequency of random events, so that if I wanted to play ultra-good or evil, I could actually get there. So I didn't really consider it cheese. Of course, others might disagree. :) [Message Ed

I still wanted to think about the empire-wide funding split, since I'm assuming the AI chooses its percentages based on the empire-wide situation. Hell, the percentages now don't reflect the actual spending. If the AI requests an empire-wide spending allocation of, say, 40/40/20, and actually gets what it wants, it could play even better than now. One other thing about waste - I've heard the argument that "you're paying those people's wages - if they're just sitting around, you sti

I was playing with an idea like that a while ago - (sales pitch on) http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=66132#68130 (mainly posts number 9 and 12 there, not the first one) (sales pitch off) Have a look at the maths there - is that the sort of thing you're thinking about?

Star Control 2 is one of my favourite games EVER - definitely the most memorable! (One word - FRUNGY! ;p ) If you're thinking of making a pure strategy game, or just doing a graphical update of an old game, my vote could go either way. But, since you said you're talking about a full-blown sequel... go StarCon2!!! (We are talking about 2, right? Not SC1 or 3?) Btw, for the folks out there who haven't played it, there's a fan-made port that works on modern computers at:
the separate governer sliders would make the game more efficinet as you have pointed out, but could you image a whole planet packed with people only building ships and having no other industry and doing no research? Maybe in a imperial government, but not in a deomcracy where people have free choice.
Well, the way I figure it, there's always other invisible jobs on every planet (farms, schools, etc), emperors just don't have to worry about them. The only jobs we have to a
That's what you think!
Hmm... an economic simulator would be nice for testing potential gov't treasurers and finance ministers... but I'd rather take a game home, thank you very much. LOL Btw, I just thought of another thing for the list: 5 - AI implications. The AI must be able to use the same system as the player (or, perhaps, a slightly different one for efficiency's sake). It shouldn't have any advantage or disadvantage over human players
1 - Get an overview of all three current spending levels (BC funding set by the empire sliders, BCs requested by planets, and BCs spent at the end of the day) at a single glance. Programming issue - When you move ANY slider, the totals should change to reflect the action.
Agreed, but I was also referring to values that are set indirectly on other screens - right now, some other financial values are also shown on the screen with the sliders (e.g. maint). Both of o

Well, all the maths does go on behind the scenes, but users should be able to have an idea of what's going on at least - e.g. they should be able to figure out "to get planet X spending more on ships, I need to increase my military funding, OR tell planet Y to stop building ships". The computer should work out all the numbers they need to know. IMHO, in any good system for spending, users should be able to: 1 - Get an overview of all three current spending levels (BC funding se

I like the ideas of putting wasted spending into research, or "investing", but I think that's only half the problem. If you want to put a few shipyard planets at 100% military spending and the rest at 0, the only way to do this would be to set the sliders to 100% military. However, with this approach, it's hard to see what the real spending levels are across the empire. The empire-wide sliders should let you set spending levels across the empire AS A WHOLE, and reset those spending

Who the heck is this guy? Spymaster, huh? Sounds familiar... (whispers) What? He's that sneaky little paparazzo who took those photos of me when I was - I'LL KILL HIM! >:( Seriously - um, I don't know what to say. I'm sorry to hear about your troubles, and definitely glad things have improved enough for you to pop in. I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I wish you all the best. Take care, matey.

This was a pet peeve of mine a while ago - I tossed around a few ideas to make it better (without putting sliders on every planet, that is), but I haven't thought about it for ages - I might have another look.
I always build constructors when I'm not building anything else. Even with logistics, this is still a good strategy because the modules don't cost extra (except for the terror star, as always). So you grab the nearest resources, beef up their defenses, load as many mining m
