If you can get an Alliance with one of the Triads you'll be in a better position . . . Most of the time if one of the remaining two AIs starts a conflict the other with rally to your defence. Good luck :)

True but I've found that until an AI has a substancial millitary or Battleship technology they'll usually stay at neutral relationship-wise if you simply throw them just one or two techs early on . . . anymore than that and you can usually get them to friendly by gifting techs alone.

Regarding the Airline Shares and thier risk, there's apparently somekind of insurance that you can pay (if you can afford it's like an extra 15% ontop of the portfolio's purchase price) offered as an incentive at the moment to stimulate needed growth . . . it's all new to us so we're proceding with caution . . . If SD wanted to spice things up easliy and keep people happy I suggest they'd at least consider adding a dozen favorites from the mods into the game permenantly. I've always been too spineless to install any of the mods for fear of them causing an annomylous sumbission (alot of which seemed to happen a couple months ago) . . . but thats just me.
As I understand it (anyone jump in to correct me if I'm wrong) each planet contributes to your research ability and rate of progress. This is why its a good idea to build a reseach HQ that you are sure is safe from invasion. When there are a lot of planets a +9 bonus would indeed seem slight (IMO not worth the moral penalty) . . . a bonus of 50% on the other hand . . . mmm . . . yummy (especialy ealy in the game when your trying to research fast enough to keep up with the AIs befor you
Ah . . . um . . . yes . . . I played a game and it was really good and the computer was also really good . . . erhm. Yes! Although I haven't tried it recently I found (bearing in mind this is before the 1.12 minor strength boosts) the fewer AIs you played against the tougher it was . . . I lost alot of games against just a couple of AIs of opposite alignment ganging up on me (esp on Medium Sized Maps) . . . if you really wanted to make it difficult on yourself you could forgo the ability bonuses . . . good luck.
