Just for the record, while I was working on tutorials, I noticed two bugs : -Import frames are flipped upside down -The palette editor can only import jasc palettes and you have to rename the PspPalette files to .pal. I've fixed the flipped frame problem and now you can import Microsoft .pal files along with JASC .PspPalette. I'm going to upload the fixed .exe as soon as I finish the first tutorial.

This a repost from the general forum thread. Here's to hoping it'll put some life back into the mods forums ^_^. So, what is it? A lot of galciv files are in a special format specific to galciv and were impossible to edit except with Mutil, which is very hard to use and prone to random crashes. There's three tools in the suite that will allow you to faily easily modify all those graphic files you couldn't change before. If you want to see an example of a modification along with

Yes, I'm sorry if I didn't provide any tutorial with precise examples yet. I worked on this for quite and I was getting eager to release it. That and I have a deadline for two projects on thuesday and thursday, so it was now or not before around may 2th. I might've been able to do it before but it would've been hard. Also, if you read the doc on the website and open some existing files, you should be able do something. Ah yes, if you can't open the files with winzip, that's bec

First, I know this should be in the mods forum but I'm posting this here for pretty much the same reasons as the Star Wars mod is posted here : The forum's pretty dead (mods forum that is). So, what is it? A lot of galciv files are in a special format specific to galciv and were impossible to edit except with Mutil, which is very hard to use and prone to random crashes. Mmmm I'm at the point where I'm ready to release it. Only hitch, I need webspace :\. Can you still give me some webspace Bard of Prey? I'd really love not to have to use some crappy free server.

Yeah there's tools available but they're so convoluted that less than 5 people on this forum ever learnt to use them. It's because it's so hard to learn how to do anything, coupled with an atrocious interface. I was able to learn how to use it pretty much only because I did a lot of graphic porgramming. Oh and status report : I've finised writting the sprite editor and the archive editor and I'm halfway through a palette editor. Also, I've axed the movie import feature for the first rel

Oh there are trainers or hack. They're incredibly easy to make even. They don't work mostly because there's been a couple of patch and they didn't follow.

I'm working on a a couple of editor to edit Gal Civ binary files. I'm not done yet but I'm doing good progress. I've written a complete sprite editor and now I need to add an archive packer/unpacker for galciv plus a palette editor. After that I was thinking of looking into the scenario/mission file format for the AP and work on an editor. Oh yeah I almost forgot : Mods Forum thread : http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GM&id=142776#157295 Some Screenshots : http://god

Well the sprite editor is done now. I'm trying to finish writting the archive and palette editors for galciv. Pretty minor stuff compared to the sprite editors but it still has to be done if any meaningful work is to be done with sprites.

Just for the record, I've not given up or anything but in University it's the exam period and I've had an unexpected contract for a small business app that had to be done the day my exam period ends. Talk about bad luck, no more free time for me heh. I'd finish the beta this week end but I'm going to my gf place to spend the week end there :P. Probably this week, I'd say. [Message Edited]

Well I was thinking of chaning the stars first. Making the floating platform or something. The ships would still fit since it's a battle high above the ground ^_^.

A mod I'm working on as I work on the editor. The basis of the mod is that you're floating and figthing over a planet. It doesn't change anything beside the graphics but I thought it would be a nice change of scenery. It's my first crack at the planet landscape, I'll have to make it much better I'm afraid but I had problems with scale. Anyhow, it's nice a nice demonstration of what's possible with galciv modding. Looks interesting, I'll give it a try. Not much time to play lately but hopefuly, I'get to play a full game with it ^_^. You say you're going to scrap the whole tech tree and remake a new one? That sounds interesting. Is it a new concept for tech or just more of the same so to speak heh. As for the graphics, you'll get to use the gfx editor pretty soon!

I worked some more on the interface, here's a screnshot of what it's going to look like the final version : http://godevaccoder.greatnow.com/Shots/Screen.html I'm getting pretty close to a release version, a beta version of course ^_^. Still will need to polish the tools for extracting/packing mtd files and an editor for the color palettes.

Yeah, but I'm in my exam week right now. I'm afraid progress my slow or grind to a halt for a week or two ;(. On the other hand, I had some fun modding map backgrounds and other nifty stuff ^_^.

Works in game now. There's some visual artifacts appearing sometimes but it works. I hope it's a bug in the encoding and not something I haven't noticed about the file format. That could be... painful.

26 Replies 3,952 Views

Mmm I know I should be doing studying for uni but a bit of reading through the old mutil documention and carielf notes on the ship builder gave me the hints I needed. I added it to the encoder and now I just need to find some of the bugs left in the encoding process. That's *easy* since the problem isn't an unknown part of the file format I have to hack but just a bug in my code.

26 Replies 3,952 Views

*Opens the champagne bottle* Woot! I was able to save a sprite sequence and have mutil read it back correctly. I was really nervous about this step because frankly there's a couple of things I didn't understand about the file format and I was afraid it would explode in my face when it came to saving the result to galciv format. I'll do some more testing and see if the game itself reacts well to ships encoded with my program. [Message Edited]

Hey MadMaz, if you're still into modding, you might be interested in a tool I'm working on for creating gal civ graphics without using mutil or the ship creator. Thread in the modding forum : http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GM&id=142776#143831
