So I finally got a game past year three, and have fleets of Scorpion class attack flyers (two Stinger-IV each). They kick some serious tail. So I've been attacking shipping lanes, taking out my neighboring enemy's economy. But he just keeps sending new freighters to replace the ones I shot down. The AI could be a bit smarter on that. I ended up by stationing a security force on his trade routes, and waiting for his replacements. If it were me playing in the AI's

The table above shows a starting colony ship of hull size 50. The ship contains a colony module, hyperdrive, sensors, and three basicSupport modules. If I attempt to build this ship, the game lists componant sizes from the second column, and says that I am out of room, and therefore cannot build such a vessel. How is it that GC2Type.xml lists BasicSupport modules for only three spaces each, but in-game they occupy five? Am I missing something?
Maybe it might be worth considering disabling the alternate forms of play for release, in order to concentrate on mainstream problems, until after release.
Tried playing "Battle of the Gods" mode for a change of pace. Two problems: First up, a glitch: It makes me pick my alignment, twice in a row. Then it offers me three government upgrade popups "would you like to switch to..." TWICE in a row (six popups). Second up, and more importantly: Building my very first planetary development -- a factory called 'Industrial Sector' -- would take a whopping 160 turns. Buy it? Can't, because it costs $12480 and I start with $5000. Lease

In version 0.81.006, I also noticed that most of the minor races seemed to start with at least four colony ships, and that's one HUGE advantage six months down the road.
When I click the build ship button from the main screen, a pop-up window appears to choose a model. This list includes vessel designs that I've saved from previous games, but don't yet have the technology to purchase. The display shows a 'purchasable' ship, the details box shows that all it's stats have been zeroed out. If I buy one, a ship with 0 hit points appears. This could be fixed by having the build-ship box not display ships that I don't have the tech to build. For
Just started a game on Gigantic map, with number of stars, number of planets, etc, all set to "common", and then when I got to the map, pressed Ctl-U (unhide), and then pressed the planets list, and selected all, sort by class. Here are the results: Class Count 19 2 18 5 17 2 16 5 15 11 14 3 13 0 12 15 11 23 10<td
How about adding a table of keyboard shortcuts? I found out purely by accident that pressing the 'C' key centers on the selected unit.
I recently received this message when clicking on the overview minimap: "This feature is not yet implemented". Not sure why -- maybe it registered as a drag-n-drop, or a band-box operation, or maybe I clicked on something in the map that hasn't been activated. In any case, just a heads up so you can make it quietly ignore the situation.
The racial pick PLANET QUALITY offers two choices: 3pts). Green Thumb +5% quality bonus -- one bonus tile for every twenty 8pts). Magical +7% quality bonus -- one tile for every fifteen The new GC2 tile system povides about ten tiles for a worthy planet, 12-16 for a good planet, and 19-26 for an excellent planet. It seems to me that these values aren't useful enough to try this racial pick, and so I offer this as a possible thought for upping the percentages
On further investigation, it seems that this message was originating from a freshly created ship. One of my shipyards had orders to send all ships to a waypoint, but the new ship did not have the range to reach that waypoint.
In planetaryImprovement.xml, the various buildings and their improvements list a column called "employment", which ranges from 0 (colony base) to 30 (secret police center). A search of draft-3 of the manual finds 0 instances of the word "employment". So what do these numbers mean?
Click the rename button on the UI panel, and a rename popup box appears, showing the current name. Begin typing a new name. Nothing happens. The player must, through trial and error, discover that they are also required to click on the name in the popup box, and as if that wasn't enough, they will additionally have to select and delete the old name first. This should be changed, so that when the rename popup appears, the name box already has the focus, and the current name
The message came up at the beginning of a turn, and I had about a dozen vessels scattered across a huge map. Maybe the ship in question has become selected as the active ship--how would I know? And more importantly, where is it?
Research Lab 4, Battleship Dauntless Two scientists in decontamination suits are examining a crusty escape pod. “So Tom, how come we’re here, cleaning debris off an escape pod?” “Suzan’s secretary won the poker game. C’mon Sam, we’re supposed to be studying it.” “That’s not what I meant, numb skull; I mean how is it that we have in our possession an expended escape pod, and furthermore how come it’s covered in this…this…What is that?”<br
The symptom pop-up message declares: "We can't travel that far. Our range doesn't extend far enough from a friendly planet or starbase to reach that destination." The problem What ship does this refer to? Possible solutions Include the ship's name in the text of the message Give the message box a title that says something like "From Scout-143" Add a "Go to ship" button to the message box that closes the box and focus
It has been said that Economics ( the dismal science ) is "Politics in disguise" - Hazel Henderson . The model of Self-equilibrating market theory that drives banking conglomerates tends to overlook the banks own methods of profiteering. You are probably familiar wit
I like the idea of having tile preferences. For instance, maybe there are ten different kinds of tile, and each race has three of them that it calls green tiles and two that it calls yellow tiles. Something like: Terran - Ocean G Plains Y Desert Y Arctic G Mountain - Rock - Dust G Jungle - Quagmire - Lava Then the overall PQ is just as it normally is (green tile count?) but would be different for each race. That coul
Something that is interesting from RPGs like Diablo: Finding the various random treasures, getting those special magic items and rare goodies. What is that in a 4x game like GalCiv? Is it finding the various random planets? The possibilities that could exist when you open a chest, or kill that level boss for a monster drop, are many different kinds, and you can hope for a good one, but not know what it's gonna be. Maybe you luck up and get that third ruby for your archer's bow. Maybe
Deep in the heart of the hot, sifting darkness that is DustWorld, a thought dances across the web of arms that is Dusty: More smelly brittle-shelled organisms will infest the air soon. The many tentacles work to guide the moving sands, creating a funneling jet stream between the rocks that can be redirected. Dusty ponders what would mix well with brittle-shells, which are so oddly self-contained. The meeting place It began on a day that it should not have been raini
I thought Stellar Cartography was a corrupted technology. If I replayed a scenario, I would know where the good planets are ahead of time, so the AI was granted this ability as well, and as a result my motives changed. Instead of trying to play a game through in order to win on the first pass, I was pre-exploring, restoring and replaying, trying for a perfect game. It makes the game more difficult to win on the first pass, and easier to win on a replay. This might be a good feature.
IGN exclusive: Interview with Suzan Shelling IGN: This is Terry Fowel with IGN, and I'm here aboard the newest naval capitol ship with Suzan Shelling, former director of Research at Perdu Labs. Suzan, we're eager to hear about your new position aboard the military's latest battleship; what will you be doing? Shelling: The Senator has asked me to lead the research efforts at Dust World, and has granted me the honorary role of Naval Liason to Research on board the Dauntless .
Yes indeedy! They seem to have a much better team of writers and directors and producers over there. I get caught up in what's going on with whom, and look forward to seeing the next one. Didn't feel that way about Star Trek, which seemed like little more than budget-conscious rehashed tension setups for commercials. Oh no, the thingamyjig is gonna blow in two minutes--hurry up and reconfigure the deflector array. Or wander through that same cavern with flashlights again. Eh, gets me w
Ya, had a buncha fun playing through most of the Wing Commander series Favorite Sci-Fi is the new Battlestar Galactica. Starbuck is totally cool.
