Maybe the decline could also be attributed to a growing number of people realizing that there is act they can commit for the sake of God that they can't also commit just for the sake of itself? Example - You can give to the poor, help the sick, volunteer, etc...without having a religion. I think more people are doing those things for the sake of those things, and then Sunday is free.
