When will the pre-order people get it? I think I read Brad in another thread say that they were going to do a "phased" rollout for the pre-order folks in order of the date we signed up. What I'm curious about now is whether we'll get email telling us to go to SDC or should we just keep trying.

Bingjack, I wasn't trying to say playing GCII=love of violence. I was just saying that games are a way of thinking about violence, if you care to use them that way, and that for me the "big numbers" involved in things like a GCII planetary invasion can give me as much pause as the goriest scene from Grand Theft Auto.

You mean that it takes too long to micro & do all the math on a large map? Nope. I mean that I agree with your basic point about a balanced budget being a bare minimum, but when a game is long and includes many, many planets, both your income and your ability to spend it are very dependent on your tech level and the state of your infrastructure.

And every religion should be submitted to public opinion. What if one of the religious person's core precepts is about keeping her faith private?

That being said, there are entire worlds of contextual difference between the "violence" in chess or GC2, and a game like Grand Theft Auto, and this topic feels out of place when brought up in the same breath as GC2. I fully agree, until Bingjack says "and this topic..." Just because first-person violence and organizational violence are fundament

Their main planet was on Mars(Jessuins V), their second colony(i was surprised as well) is on Mercuy(Jessuins III), and there was a third planet i colonized that was a class 28 at the end and it was Jupiter(Jesuuins IV). TGE, are you saying you had a map where the Terran homeworld shared a system with the Jessuins and they had three colonies in t

Being violent does not necessarily underly bad morals. It does if your faith has rules like the Shakers, some Buddhists, or the Society of Friends (Quakers) have. IIRC, the Shakers were among the first conscientious objectors in US history. They formally asked Lincoln to exempt them from the draft on grounds of killing people being a violation of

Now you don't see Indians blowing themselves up and carrying on like lunatics and swearing to iliminate pakistan do you Yes, there is a great deal of sectarian strife within India (bombs, assassinations, the whole song and dance) and some folks are worried that the BJP (current ruling party) are covertly committed to elminating Pakistan.

Are you playing DA? I never saw anything like that in DL, but the idea is neat, except... Does the UI somehow show the new colony on a moon of Jupiter? If not, there's some back story seriously missing about whether someone figured out how to build massive-scale habitats for the Jovian environment or the new colony is a heavily gene-modded branch who swim around in that surreal soup that might not even have a solid core.

danielost, I still don't seem to be communicating well with you. I'm asking for *specifics*, e.g. "Lebanese members of Hezbollah" or "Iranian-funded Palestinians." When you use the small-but-large words you seem to prefer, you bury many peace-loving subgroups in your larger category of "enemies."

I disagree with you philosophically to a small extent, in the sense that I think the game is really all about taking 1 bc of industrial capacity and matching it up with 1 bc of money. All the +50% military bonus does is give you more capacity. Isn't this really a math point? tetleytea's remark makes me think about where my math studies broke down

Gosh, wish I'd had time to follow and participate in this thread before things got so thick and fierce. Put me down as Old-School MS-hater, Defender of Brad, and Vexed by Vista. On the Vista business, I must confess that while many concerns voiced here are legitmate (not least things related to the economics of an unchecked monopoly), I know that I will eventually really value some stuff in Windows Vista. That's despite how much I dread Vista's arrival in my work life

Political correctness is something that I abhor, so I do not play into it.[/quote] No worries, Evil. I've thought of you as a voice of moderation in the last few days' posts in this megasprawl of a thread. Besides, one year when I was a dorm student in Sarasota, one of my best friends and his roommate declared their room to be a PCDMZ. One of the men in that room

It makes for a more interesting and believable game for me it everyone doesn't have the same exact techs by midgame. I haven't noticed anyone put the point just this way. I think I might try my next game with tech trading off, even though I've so far thought turning the option off seemed cheesier than being a "tech whore." p.s. Y'all's u

the arabs One of the biggest problems with this so-called war on terror is the fact that so few people use precise terms to define actors in the conflicts. To say "the Arabs" is no more precise than saying "the Americans" or "the Muslims." All of these categories are far too large and complicated to have practical value in a discussion.

DA those differences have actually decreased significantly and the AI races seem a lot more homogenous. I sympathize here. Oddly, the enviro tech that I like so much seems part of "the problem" here. Hopefully the devs will be able to make some mildly serious additions that will link different species to different baseline environments and make t

For me, the thing still comes down to "more clicking than thinking." I certainly hit stretches in GCII where I'm processing turns very rapidly, but IMO you need to be able to spend a while (*hours* for some of us huge map folks) making choices for an interesting turn before you can call it a serious strategy game.

OK, I'm finally in the late stages of my first Metaverse game and I'm worried that I've got myself in a win-for-me that I will not be able to post or that will earn me some embarassing icons at the bottom of my forum posts. I was doing really well "leading from behind" with an alliance win as my goal. The Terrans were dominant for most of the game but also my first ally and they never allied with another AI. I've been ranked 3rd since mid-game and 2nd for quite a while. My alli

2nd the OP, generally speaking. But declining reaction time and wrist-wear aside, I think my main reason for never having gained much interest in RTS games is that IMO, there is no S if the game is RT. They really should be called RTT (Real-time Tactical) games. They don't give you a way to consider and implement a strategy; you must develop tactical skills that you can apply without any real deliberation. The things are just a twist on shooter games, moving from first to third person.
