I think that shipbuilding would be possible, but would ruin the base concept of the game, the need for taking planets. I don't see how this is so. You need planets for population (income, troops), research, influence, and places to build achievements and wonders. I'd *love* to see a "stardock" that both built and repaired ships, and it seems a ne

Beg pardon for ducking the intent of the OP, but I have a Metaverse empires question. I'm still a long way from the end of my first MV game, but I'm starting to suspect that "my emperor" (Wheeloffire) is on some extended tour of the provinces. What happens to players in an empire whose emperor is inactive? If the Empire of Standards declines and falls, will scores I post as a member be able to follow me to a new empire?
Humans are lying, cheating, backstabbing weasels. We are the only lifeform on this planet that does these things. That's not exactly true (especially the "weasels" part ). It's risky to describe animal behavior in human terms, but I've read some primatology
I admit I was fishing for digressions when I started this thread, but I hadn't at all expected a sustained debate about the Garden of Eden stories. If I was a better scholar, I'd have something sharp to say about how dull natural law arguments are for me, but I can only mutter about liking physics and politics more than theology. Grounding worldly power (i.e. churches & religious states) in myths has always led to nasty problems, IMO. I also fear my last post about being "combative" was some den
oh and g.w. you can say what ever you want to as long as it is civil I'm pretty sure daneilost didn't mean to be combative, but his or her quote could be read that way by many around here. I'm having a hard time with it b/c of conflict between my "secular" commitment to civil discourse and my "spiritual" convictions that the book faiths (revealed
Sometime just before I started playing DA beta games, I switched from spending my initial BC quickly to a strategy that relies on minimal quick builds and some good luck with anomolies, as tetleytea mentioned. I haven't tried playing above the Tough level, but I'm starting to believe that the human player is likely to be better at seeing the benefits of a short-term annual deficit than an AI that has no bonuses--I seem to be getting better results out of my colony rush efforts with car
It's a two-fer. For folks who are still pining for old-school DL intel, this is a two-fer at the expense of comparatively no-brainer opposition research. I really like the DA added option to disable an enemy planetary improvement, but I'm having a hard time getting over my resentment about "giving up" the passive intelligence gathering.
I haven't noticed any talk yet about localization for DA, but I hope it is not far off. The US education system doesn't seem to interested in other languages yet, but I believe that our software industry is ahead of some others in seeing the value of making the baseline English "international" so that translators can do their jobs quickly. Mind you, I have no idea how a localization contractor might approach some of the silly English that makes many of us here in North America fond of G
i believe that the true christian moto should be do unto others and most other religians also have something to this effect even the jewish tooth for a tooth kind of falls into that thing ie if you don't want someone to take your tooth don't take his <TABLE cellpadding=8 width="95%" align=center bgColor=#FFF394 class="mb-Body-Quote-Table"
This also sounds a little along the lines of Spore. My first thought when I finished reading the OP. i can't see EA backing down from the biggest money spinner ever! My first worry once I
Making friends with the Yor and building influence base trails could work. Even if they're hard to culture flip, I've seldom seen them become major influence players. In one of my DA games I built a "bypass" by using inf bases to lop an edge of their open-space inflenece area. This cleared a path that for ships from my "provinces" that I put on autopilot to rally points in my core territory.
I honestly cannot see myself going back to DL for any reason. I'm a ship speed junkie, but I'm in recovery. I was pretty comfortably on the wagon in DA, but I'm still letting myself build max-speed constructors and freighters in my (last?) DL game. But keithLamothe's reply about the Old tab in the planet build list has made think of anot
The Speed Limit mega event is what pushed me half out of the speed-junkie camp. I'm in the early middle of a DL game now (Huge map) and I've kept my combat fleets at speed 4 much longer than I used to. But I admit I still keep my constructors and freighters as fast as they can be while still having decent life support.
Your screen cap links were broken so I didn't check, but AFAIK you're reporting a known issue in DL. I recently switched from the beta back to DL and the influence area after reload is "normally" smaller than it is "normally."
I was just thinking that in order to truly appreciate which technology or improvement is best for its situation, the AI needs to consider opportunity costs. I'd like to see the AIs able to take an approach that reflects the "role playing" differentiations among themselves. It seems like an AI led by the War Party should have a different formula f
Im not saying that they should be mutually exclusive sometimes the two goals to win or stay in character could go in hand. But what Im saying is that that on the HIGHEST setting, the drive to win should always trumph over the roleplaying aspect. This is almost self-contradictory; "not...mutually exclusive" doesn't work with "drive to win s
Gee, it looks like Brad's recent line about "role play" caught more than my attention. I confess to not having finished the thread where I said basically "yay" for seeing him talk like this, and what do I see on first check for latest posts but this swell new thread. Regardless of its roleplaying abilities it should always, always do its best to win and hence not
One of the real challenges in writing the computer AI is whether to have the AI role play or to have it play like a multiplayer player. Now I'm *really* starting to understand how this game has pulled in so many players with such different interests in the game. Plus I've had yet another lesson on the "assume makes an a$$ of u and me" t
Forgive the layperson language, but isn't the light wave/particle thing part of how the heavy math crowd started talking about the Heisenberg uncertainty principle? In other words, doesn't whether light "looks like" a wave or a particle depend on your observation technique?
Gross vs. net. I knew there were words I should've been using. Charles, thanks for the kind words to the beta crowd.
I rather like the targetting-by-weapon instead of by-ship rules There's another good one I forgot, and I've also realized I should've used bullets and not numbers b/c my list is not rank-ordered.
Like I need another challenge to my gaming portion control... I've been calling it NotMoM2 in hopes of poking a working title out of the Stardock folks. I figure it is way too early to start talking about delivery dates, but I'm hoping we won't have to wait too long after mid-February to see some public discussion of features and functions. Just thinking about it makes me remember the first time I stumbled on a portal to "the others side of the map." That could look *so* cool
I use the Wiki more all the time but still don't just look up a word there very often, other than tech babble like "inter-farm replication" (not there, yet). Back twoards the OP, in the last fortnight my little neighborhood has seen a burglary interrupted by a resident returning to her apartment a few blocks from me and a successful burglary about 40-50m from my house (next street over, couple of houses up). I like to talk to neighbors, and this kind of thing stirs up the old b
Ahh... i give up with this statement, ists and isms are bad things regardless of your disposition. Ahh, you're just being a contrarian
TGE, I'm no theist, much less a monotheist, but I have to scoff your scoff. AFAIK, if you want to play formal cosmology games, theists are roughly as likely as atheists to win a given bout. To top that, no small number of polytheists, pantheists, animimsts, etc., think the one-god and no-god crowds are seriously missing the big picture.
