Scientists have developed a beam that would be able to penetrate our store memories. Its in its early stages, but when tested this beam was able to make the person remember the smell of something that the beam specified. Can we get a reference here? This remark brings me back to the science, theory, fact, etc. thing. Written words, in the T

i believe Islam is under heavy attack, and i think the biggest threat comes from i'ts own achillies heel of intollerance. Intolerance is a big problem for every major religion I know of, with the possible exception of Buddhism, and I'm pretty sure I just haven't read enough there to know about factional wars among Buddhists or between Buddhists a
Thanks for the replies, pawnshop. I'm gonna have to start a list of setting twists to try so I can get out of my rut. For example, I've always thought turning off tech trading seemed "unnatural," but enough folks call it "cheese" to make me wonder what bad smell I'm missing there. And the nearly empty but huge map sounds very interesting--kind of an anti-universe to what I gather Mumblefratz typically plays. Although I suppose his swarm-of-starbases strategy might have even gr
Race Specific Abilities and Options. Watuciswatugets, I might have misread you, but you should get at least part of your wish here with the new Super Abilities in DA. You cannot change a built-in species' Super Ability, although you can choose any ability for a custom player or AI species. <TABLE cellpadding=8 width="95%" align=center b
There is no way to totally avoid a war. Someone, at some point, will call you out. You can at least put it off for a *very* long time if you combine tech and econ leadership with a middle or upper-middle military ranking. I suspect this situation can be pretty different depending on your map settings, but I've had a few DL games on huge maps wher
Hate to say it, but a theory is just that... a theory. In the common language sense, e.g. "my theory about who the murderer is," this is basically correct. But saying that gravity is "just a theory" does nothing to contradict the fact that when you lift an object from the ground and then let go, it falls (unless you're playing games with compress
the scoremonger settings Please be more specific, and thanks for the neat word. I'm trying my first Metaverse game right now, but I've done my share of scoffing interest in scores. My guess is you're talking about <TD class="mb-Body-Q
In no particular order, * A way to gather intelligence without harming other empires * Diplomacy upgrades to add choices & make the UP more than semi-random events * Starbase improvements for management & to enable enough constructor investment to make a starbase able to defend against your own best fleet Darnit, I'm greedy. Three is a start. I like many of the ideas in this thread so far.
Pretty soon, with all this praise, Kryo is going to turn into the Borg. I think the praise is a side effect, and I hope someone up there in MI is helping make sure Kryo gets enough sleep, decent food, and at least token exercise. Not that I was up too late on the night when the DA beta was relased, watching him on IRC *not* going to bed
Nope, if it were to reflect RL, it'd be. I suspect we disagree on language here more than "the facts." My feeble efforts in this thread have failed so far to get across to you that, for me, GCII is by definition a game about politics. When I taught civics, I asked my students on the first day of class to start working on their own
i thought you were saying that mormans and muslims were the roots I should confess that I was being snarky about all the Big Book religions. I have serious problems with the notion of revealed truth, especially when it's mixed up with literature that was built by committees over centuries--*many* centuries, if you think of the Torah, Bi
plural marriage is outlined in the old testiment a long time before mormans or muslims showed up Hence my use of "roots." Several years ago, before the phrase 'gay marriage' was common in newspapers, I and some friends made sloppy jokes about queer folks and traditional ("sons of Abraham" et al ) polygamists being strange bedfellows. Later
Mumblefratz et al , why should those of us who've played GCII for a long while but not yet been seriously interested in the Metaverse take the time & bother to register for & learn yet another web site? The banners y'all get above your medals are neat and all, but...
I could swear these are mutually exclusive... I'm not one of those folks who thinks swearing's impolite, but your apparent objection seems like half my point. The game is fundamentally political, but also open to endless debate about about details (the underlying math models and "formal" English about those models). <TABLE cellpadding=8
Now I don't think that science has actually studied the animal kingdom with regards to sex and if the animals derive pleasure from the act Silly Evil, the subject's so old for "science" that the new queer cable channel is running a documentary about "homosexuality" among animal, not to mention that the LOGO show is mostly old news for many of us
overcome our physical pleasures Why do they need to be "overcome?" Can't we all just get along? Pleasure and pain are two words we use to describe our bodies' responses to stimuli. Evolution shaped our response systems to help us thrive. Surely what you're talking about is moderation and not elimination of pleasure. Mind you, I'm only br
Don't want to turn it into a game of politics, now would you? Two answers here: either "Absolutely" or "It already is one." What is the 4X genre other than a collection of modeling kits for building toy political economies? And if you're thinking "but it's a wargame," that's no defense--war is violence that's organized for political reasons.<br/
The original topic was a vague but clever question about law.
I tend to agree more with McDoogles here. I hadn't thought much about alliances and the UP together before I read here, but now I'm more vexed than ever that there is no way to prepare for UP votes.
FortyTwo, if I hadn't switched from the beta back to DL for my current game, I'd completely agree with you. I felt pretty much the same way about most of my DA beta games. But back in DL-land, I'm playing with my typical pre-DA beta settings (huge map, common/abundant real estate, and Tough AIs), only for some reason in this game I've had something close to the experience you describe. It has pretty much become my "problem" b/c I didn't expect to have so many Close moments and b/c I cou
I've heard a lot of people say that killing an animal to put it out of it's misery is a 'good' thing. Now maybe it is and maybe it isn't... but doesn't is seem odd that to us as a species our answers always take the 'easy way' out... sure it is easier to destroy something than create it... what do you think about this G.W.? I'm a lapsed vegetari
i can hear the HDD murmur in my speakers. every time the HDD light flashes, i can hear it, and it is a bit annoying, what could cause it? Are you sure you don't just have loud hardware? I live alone so I can use nice speakers, but it seems like I've never had a PC box that was anywhere near quiet. Some of them had very loud hard drives
I'm surprised Mumblefratz hasn't chimed in here--perhaps its his Metaverse focus at the moment plus the fact that he's not doing the beta. The OP has made me vaguely recall some stuff I read from Mumble elswhere, and IIRC, he has either used or suggested this cheap ship+military starbase strategy (maybe related to "keeping the AIs off my back" talk?). Regardless of who does it, I'd like to see some numbers talk (especially from coders) about how hard the OP's idea might be to implement.
our ultimate fate - that being eternal life, or eternal death. Don't the afterlife schemas for Christians and Muslims include the possibility of eternal damnation? Eternal death's fine by me, but I don't recall ever hearing a priest or imam say that was an option. Also, what happens if (when?) we develop technology that effectively stops
