The mega events I don't agree with. they aren't supposed to be balanced. Umm, what if your post makes me think I meant "tuned" when I said "balanced" earlier? I actually like the basic idea of shaking the snow globe to watch the pretty chaos. But I hope there might still be some tuning underway regarding things like overlapping mega events (e.g.

I know just enough about code work to respect Kryo's remark about things not always being as simple as we might think out in player-land. But I'd still really like to be able to have a "Get Away From Me" message option, at least. Some form of "tone" layer is something I've long thought missing from GCII. Threatening or sucking up to different AIs should be more than a simple matter of what you offer vs. what they have. Drengin should expect aggressive posturing while Iconians should shu

Frogboy's question makes me realize how easy it is live (work, play, fight) with a mistaken assumption. I figured "balance" issues were what the devs kept first in mind and that us "public beta" folks were there to help give UI feedback, respond generally to the new functionality, and help catch subtle bugs and minor text glitches. I solidly agree with samOt's point about mega events and have strong sympathy for folks wondering (here and in other threads) about how well the AIs are adap

Seriously guys, I even never get invaded, do you ?? Last game I played on tough (no advantage for the CPU, but neither for me), I just built a few ships and invaded my neighbour et voila, it was won. The Krynn didn't build any defender because it research colonization techs. That's so stupid. Invaded, most certainly, although not so much in the D

IIRC, you should have gotten all the Collectors Edition stuff when you used Stardock Central to update your installation. To check your settings on this forum, click My Account on the bar near the top of the page. If you're asking about Metaverse accounts, I'm a raw newbie there and still find that UI pretty confusing even though I managed to get myself into an empire. There's a wave of Metaverse activism going on--I trust a sharper eye will chime in here shortly.

OK, I decided to take a beta break and start my first Metaverse game. I've read CariElf's Metaverse sticky, but I'm guessing that's just the tip of the iceberg & I need some advice on where to read further so I understand how playing a Metaverse game works across GCII sessions. I played some last night and things seemed "normal" enough except for the odd regular appearance (e.g. whenever I researched a new tech) of a Stardock splash screen. I shut down the game before bed b/c I

bulsh-t! stupid, no way America would not be capable of hearing about a nuke threat from North Korea I could only hope the world's most heavy heavies have this kind of intel, but I suspect that the gripes some of us have made about DA espionage changes reflect the larger reality that spying, whether active or passive, is never a sure thing. <

Thanks, Kryo. I can't really imagine a price an AI could offer me to turn over a resource mine, so it makes sense I'd need to offer an emperor's ransom and then some. But I could swear I've read some stuff around here recently about folks buying mines and even worlds from the AIs. Are you folks who make such posts taking huge hits from the >20K treasury penalty, running insanely big economies like Mublefratz does, or what? What possible number of BC could make an AI sell one of those a

I'm a student of real-world gov't and a lover of games. For the game, I want to preserve my sense of trust in Stardock's commitment to making the AIs play by the same rules we must use, high-diff bonuses aside. The fact that any survey unit (mine or AI) can auto-target anomolies makes me wonder if there might be a unspuspected AI "cheat" re colonization strategies. But I must admit that many games ago, the fact that I often saw AI colony ships that were *very* far from home made me cons

beacuse they have no way to sell ships or bases. Can some folks (Kryo?) confirm or correct this? I've never been able to buy any resource mine from any AI (major or minor), but I've always assumed that is b/c I don't have (know) what it would take for them to sell.

FortyTwo, I appreciate the second but I was pretty deliberate about the word "begging" b/c I don't earn a great deal and I'm *really* interested in what Stardock will do when they set to work on NotMoM2 (the fantasy TBS yet to be named). If we're lucky, we'll benefit from the fact that Stardock devs are also players. I'm also conflicted about whether the Stardock Boosters Club should work to get more paying customers for our dear devs. The software industry is sadly littered with exampl

I loved SMAC a lot, but it did seem to have a weak core engine riding around in a fabulous chassis. I found it very immersive and IIRC it had one some of the strongest support for micromanagers that I've ever seen. But in the end, the rival AIs were much more stylish than they were clever. PC games are kind of like food in that you eat with your eyes first, but for both games and meals, the main ingredients need to be the best you can get.

There's a decent article at the galwiki on Approval . Two effects I try to keep a close eye on are: 1) population growth and 2) Senate votes within my empire. For me, high approval is most important in the long middle of a game (I typically play gigantic maps with common/abundant real estate). In the early game, I have too much to do to worry about max pop growth, but once I have several colonies going I *really* start nee

Great Emporore, even though I managed to join the Empire of Standards, I still know next to nothing about the Metaverse. Your post 59 makes me wonder if there's some "hidden" forum or other in-Metaverse comm channel. Isn't this forum where vets who scoff scores should volunteer to help new folks? BTW, I do intend to try posting at least one game after the Beta ends (or maybe if the last beta stages include Metaverse access).

I forget whether I saw the change in 1.4, but in DA the TAB key (and the Find button) skips any units that have been set to guard or sentry. If you're playing a version with this functionality, the "not working" could be b/c all your ships are set to guard or sentry. Since post is in strategies, I'll throw in an aside: after TAB started working this way, I renewed an old habit from Civ. Keep one unit active so you have a chance to check the whole map for units you might want t

Well you should want it I should do a lot of things, like stay on the billable clock instead of typing here, eat better, get more exercise, beat my kitties more often, etc. And, yes, I *should* want my vote to have a nanogram of influence on US foreign policy. But the ignorance problems is real, even for us overeducated types. I doubt I

I believe we are already pretty much living under the Robber Barons As an overtrained cynic, I'm glad that I basically disagree with this claim. I think many aspects of "the ownership society" are more like the late 19th century than the early 21st, but I remain hopeful that today's barons, as a class, better appreciate their dependence on the re

And here I am trying to get over the notion that smaller maps smell funny... Really, though, I'm very much interested in whether anyone else has seen the like of this & what the Stardock crew might have to say. I have no idea if smaller-map folks tend to avoid Tiny. I'd be ironically satisfied to see a dev/testing weakness at the other end of the map-size scale.

My suggestion is to have a place to put 'sleeper agents' for each race. These sleeper agents would not cripple any improvements, but would do the secondary tasks that agents do like getting intellegence on the civilization and having a chance to steal techs. I know that dev time is very limited now that the release date is so close, but *WOW* do

3) This would be a nice feature, but AFAIK there's no way to do this. I can see how asking for a minimap in the same view as the full-screen planet page is a "no way" item, but maybe there's still hope for getting main map focus to shift with last planet viewed the same way it does with last planet selected on the Colonies tab of the Civilizatio

I played a fair amount of Civ III. But I was perhaps exaggerating a tad in my scoff of Civ IV. I'll almost certainly play it some in a year or three when the necessary hardware is cheap and the game box is on the discount shelf. On the other hand, I've almost had to stop looking at screen caps of GCII b/c I fear an impulse hardware buy...
