Though now you got me thinking - couldn't you in the original game transport most of the colonists into a transport, have it standing by, gift the world (which now only has a handful of colonists) and then take it back? This seems to me like it should work, but the notion makes me wonder if the AIs can hold a grudge over such a (dastardly) maneuv

Spies can't operate on a Orbital Defence Tile Zephyr, can you confirm this for Planetary Defence tiles also? Your post makes me wonder if Orbital Defences might be different b/c they affect units instead of just boosting the soldiering stats for a colony.
@Mystik re Q on my last post: Deth seems to get what I was after--I'm guessing that when Brad masters the multi-core stuff, I'll likely get my wish, which is that the GCII AIs will spend all their "free time" (when I have the game running in the background) thinking about stuff. Re the reload stuff, I was very glad to see the post-load production drop go away. I still see a "problem" with initial influence areas after a reload, but my best guess as to why that's still there is that folk
I haven't tried it, but it seems like a spy should disable a Planetary Defense tile. But off the top of my head I can think of two mitigating factors: 1) you need to have the spy on hand, and 2) the Counter Espionage Center would block this tactic. I'm also not sure what happens now when you take a world that has one of your spies placed. I vaguely recall from an earlier build that this left a "stuck" spy. I'm pretty sure that's different by now, but I don't know for sure or what the di
The strange thing was, after the first one or two turns, the ships seemed to go to sleep. Now I wish I'd hung in a bit longer. Does anyone (Kryo?) know if there's a way to deliberatly trigger an event, and if so, is that a reasonable thing for a beta volunteer to try?
It was an over-elaborate way trying to say something like "way to mix a signal." I was actually working earlier yesterday, and sometimes trying to polish up other folks' writing leaves my "writing muscles" in that rubbery state that you can get from a good resistance workout. I wasn't drinking heavily, but it sure does read that way to me this morning I hope that some other folks mig
I would very much like to see answers to the OP questions about reloaded vs. active games, but the thread subject caught my attention for differnt reasons. Apologies if this appears a hijack, but I want to see replies about both the OP subject and ones about folks who might leave a GCII game running and "ignore" their PC (leaving the OS active but not using the box). Can the AIs use the "idle" CPU time as an alternative or addition to the "more CPU" option? If they can't, how hard woul
Very neat website, check it out. Don't forget to contribute if you can, and then nag the regular folks on this forum about how little work most of us do over on the galciv wiki. I've complained here much more than I've worked there, and I deserve some grief on that account.
On the other hand, it is also perfectly reasonable that you should always be able to communicate with a race...through a third party Oi, what a backwards pat on the back I certainly appreciate the leave-me-alone thing; one of my personal character flaws is
Mainly by cooincidence with my personal GCII learning curve, during the beta I've begun trying to be more active in using econ and tech strength to build my diplo rating with the AIs. I was happy to read early on that the AIs would want a break between major agreements (trades), but I wonder if it might be reasonable (code-plausible) to exclude tribute offers from this "I'm ignoring you" stuff. Anyone else think an AI should always be open to offers of "free" stuff?
I'd also appreciate a bit more info about the Why stuff behind many game elements like "We know what you're doing" on the Diplo page. Something about my griping elsewhere on the DA espionage system makes me think there could be a good long-term solution in a new set of summary reports that might include things like "You have a -1 for Militaristic because the Korx believe that your fleets are weak (or badly positioned, whatever)." In my last DL games, I just read this warning t
Well, I never got to finish the Speed Limit huge map b/c the Peacekeeper event killed that game, but I still appreciate the idea if not the last implementation I saw. Both events, actually, and the larger effort to spice up long games through events (especially when the galaxy is quiet a long time). I hope that doesn't mean I appear to have terminal "Fanboyism"</t
Is 0.20b.033 "Beta 2A?" I thought I saw a .20a in SDC while I was trying to finish my last Beta 2 game.
@n0v4k4n3: I know about the intel reports (much harder to get as of 2B). My request for "summary" stuff in the UI was laziness-driven. I wanted some pointy-haired boss tools. @Quixen: I'm pretty sure now that I need to work on some small maps after the beta. Leaving the comfort zone is doubtless good exercise. Re digression on intel reports, another good reason to keep an eye on AI research paths is to help you pick the best time to trade or give away a tech, e.g. trading away
Thanks, Geist. I hope we can see some more reports here from others who've seen the event, and I'm especially interested in anyone else who saw it in the very late game and thinks they might have been a bit overpowered when they showed up. A sound beating from this planetless minor could definitely spice up a quiet late game, but right now I think their kung fu might be too strong--my strongest (large) fleets had zero chance of defeating a pair of Peackeepers, and the ship stats made m
Plant multiple spies on their worlds and then immediately remove them all. This seems to have changed in 2B. Unless I've done something weird, you seem to have to leave spies in place for at least one turn before you get an intel stream. I'm really glad to see more people showing interest in having a clear separation between data collection and
If I kept a timesheet, I'd probably have to quit playing or at least cut back drastically Whether and how long I might play on a given day varies wildly b/c my paid work is very unpredictable. This silly forum cuts into my play time regularly, but I need the scribbling exercise when I'm not able to put in billable hours. I've been hitting the game harder than ever since mid-fall b/c t
I think it would be an extremely cool twist on an AI tech victory, though, if the game kept going after the faction disappears (evolves?). I love this idea. Any guesses about how much of a hassle it might be to code?
Ouch, n0v4k4n3, I'm a FL native and former civics teacher
I don't mind the clicking, personally. I enjoy the suspense of waiting to click and find out the results. Fair answer--hadn't thought of that, but I do sometimes study the list of parties and try to remember the last election. That's b/c I share Mistralok's question about whether the info has practical value. These days I assume the vo
Why would my empire use the capital of a newly aquired slave race? Because a capital is a *building* with *benefits*, and folks who don't play Evil probably don't think of newly conquered worlds as being enslaved. Removing the Torian boot from your neighbors' necks is liberating them <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Hmm.gif"
Grrn_bean, what kind of game are you considering? Map settings offer pretty serious variation, so "two planets" could be two of thee or two of several hundred. I'm interested in how some of the pros around here might answer your question, but I suspect you need to add a few more details to get the kind of answers you want.
This is a tautology. Money = Success Although I appreciate QuietlyObserving's reply overall, I must note that his or her statement here is an example of nasty rhetorical language. The quote that QO critiques includes To be
I don't recall if I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I'm a GCII player who might should give up the game in the name of wrist health. For some inexplicable reason, I've finally just noticed that the Senate elections process requires you to click "Vote" even though you have no other option than to view the results. I'm impelled to make a mixed-mind demand for either one less click or an open-ended set of possible clicks for the Senate vote. I can't see the value of the current
As those probes find resources they get upgraded to constructors and another survey probe is rolled out. Girls and boys, this is a primo example of why reading these forums can help your game. I never imagined building a probe vessel with the intention of upgrading it to constructor if it found a resource node.
