At full tech, and all morale trade goods, and maybe a few morale resources, I can have my tax rate at 89% and 100% approval for populations of around 15000 The way morale works, you get a morale hit when tax rate reaches 50%, again if it reaches 75%, and again if it reaches 90%. There may be a hit at 25% as well, but I don't remember.

False. While they don't know where the good planets are, most races still begin with Stellar Cartography, so at least know where the planets are. They just have to explore them one by one to find which ones are colonizable. The balancing aspect is mainly in diplomacy, and maybe the secondary world they get. It's a little video I recorded several hours ago. But first, I wanna make sure it's ok if I uploaded it somewhere. It'll probably be hosted on one of those sites that convert the video into swf so the quality will be pretty low-res. And it's the Top Down 1 camera, so it's relatively static. It's also a little spoiler-ish because I'm using the biggest weapons and best armor.

I've been playing around with the concept of making fleets of glass cannons. Ships with almost no defense, but huge attack numbers. As long as I attack first, and I have at least the same number of ships as my opponent, there's a good chance they'll all go boom before they can hit me. I also make tiny ships with 0 defense as escorts. The idea is that since the ratio of attack/defense is used in determining which ship gets hit first, these small cannon fodder will be shot first, but

I'm a culturalist usually (but win militarily for more points), but since you can't turn the victory condition off in the scenarios, I do a heckuva lot more conquest. Good soldiering is a must, as they help prevent huge population losses when you invade.

Well, trade routes have a set lifetime. Once it reaches that lifetime, it expires. Or so I remember. They can also be attacked of course.
