ActiveX is also a means used by some to install viruses, keyloggers,etc.... That's why you want to keep your security settings high in IE, and be VERY careful downloading unsigned ActiveXcontrols. For these reasons Firefox doesn't use ActiveX (plus it's MS proprietary) Firefox does have RSS feed, but since I've never used it I can't say if it works any better or not.
