Regarding your original point, I thought this: I majored in journalism. When I began the major, I was conservative and generally Republican. By the time I was out of college, I was a raving Democrat. Now, a few years out, I've moderated to the middle. However, I'm nearly positive that if I were to work in journalism instead of doing what I'm doing (which, at the moment is unemployment but should change here shortly to publishing), I'm pretty sure I'd g

Congratulations for being in your third year. Hmm. I'm thinking about your kids growing up with a parent who'll (likely) be on call a great deal of the time. My dad was, and we got used to it. He even ran out of my parents 30th anniversary dinner, not because of a mid-life crisis but because some idiot had shot himself in the foot and, well, it's a small town, two docs, and Dad was on call. I vaguely remember that he had to leave a couple of

It is my humble opinion that Paris Hilton epitomises everything that is wrong with girls, and guys in the 21st century Mine, too, only mine's not humble AT ALL. I can't stand her or Nicole Richie. Ugh. Blech. Yech. *gags* Good blog. Maybe taking the book a little too seriously if it d

Of course if you agree with this little venture into a twisted daydream, thats one bad mark against YOU... Darn. I was in full agreement with you, the one caveat being this: would we have to remember a PIN number to access ratings? I can never remember those stupid things.... Clever blog. (That

Nonetheless, perhaps the only way to get people used to this new social norm is to make people constantly aware of it and to kick up a stink about it. Yes, some people are a bit thick about learning these things. My own dad, for one. <img src="../images/smil

I really enjoyed reading this. Being American, I grew up with the idea that arranged marriages were bad, but it's been nice to see and hear that I was wrong. Just out of curiosity, what would happen if a couple like yourselves were to divorce? Could you both remarry? Are their penalties? Or is it a really hard process to go through? Good blog. -A.

I would have no problem taking my wife's last name if I preferred it over mine. Do you mean if she preferred it over yours? Er.... Or your way sort of makes sense. I would say, then, that your wife and I would have something in common in the way we chose our married last names. H said he'd have

As more people treat it as a temporary thing, a deal to back out on when it becomes unpleasant, the less value it will have. Hear, hear. Although the point of this blog isn't about divorce, it's been in the back of my mind. I used to frequent theknot.com, which is a site for brides. Fairly useful in ter

I have a beef with a particular aspect of feminism--a small beef, perhaps veal--but beef nonetheless. It's when a married couple for whatever reason doesn't have the same last name (generally speaking, when the wife keeps her name); specifically, when the wife gets very upset by being incorrectly addressed. For example, I have two friends, we'll call them J

What's it like to have a tongue planted in your cheek? Do you have a regular tongue, too? If so, are the two always, y'know, knocking against each other, or trying to talk at the same time? Does it come out of the mouth straight like a regular tongue, or does it come out, like, at an angle (as it would seem from the physiology of cheeks, being mostly perpendicular to the mouth)? I've always wondered.... <img src="../images/smiles/joke.gif" bor

There are just some blogs I don't want to read and even more that I might read, but won't comment on. What chiprj said.

I flew Qantas to Australia and was ready to kill by the end of the trip. If I ever do that again I'm going upgraded even if I have to go into credit card debt. (I blame Australia for being so far away. Dummies.) Later I flew Delta and British Airways to England and back several times. I've found that two things make the trip go better: sleeping pills (Ambien) and DVDs. But I hear you on the "scolding" thing--I hate that. Dressing up

Going off on Gideon's tangent, I read (somewhere) that you have to drink a litre of straight aspartame to get the same cancer or cancerous symptoms that rats get, 'cause that's proportionate to the quantity given to them in tests (depending on body weight, etc.) Also, Gid, from my short stint with cigarettes, I think I remember reading that they also have formaldehyde or some such substance in them. Mmm. <img src="../images/smiles/miam.gif" border=0 AL

Two weeks ago my friend was killed in a car accident. I just found out tonight, and then I had to be the one to call my best friend, his ex-girlfriend, and tell her. She was very calm about it. And after I told her everything I knew, which wasn't much, we were just quiet for a long time. What do you say? Neither of us wanted to stay on the line but then there's that m

Well, let's see: On JU I'm already a Citiizen...and don't you have to wear a uniform these days to get the title "Hero"? (Enrique Iglesias tried to get it with a song but I don't think it worked for him.) So I think I'll go with "Patriot." Aside: You have Homestar Runner and Jib Jab as links to your site. I'm sorry but that deserves an "interesting," if not "insightful." Cheers. -A.
