I was playing...um...you know, I can't remember! I've tried playing some other games lately, but just can't get away from GalCiv!

There is a strategical map (Europe or Japan, depending on the game). These are divided into regions (more or less real ones). On this map, you can see your fortresses or simple forts. And your troops, stacked. This part is TBS. your armies can move from one region to another per turn.

But if you attack an ennemy region, then you leave the strategic map and go to the tactical map. This one is all 3D, with hills, forests, plains that may or may not provide cover: if there is a hill between your and your ennemys troops starting position, they won't be able to see you. So you can ambush them, etc.
But the best about this game is that it's not just a matter of army numbers. there is a big morale part to the game: if your troops get flanked by cavalry, the soldiers will start getting nervous, then wavering, and then finally rout. So, if you play it well, a smaller army can beat a huge one. With the right strategy. A bit like the french and the english at Azincourt: the english where outnumbered 10 to 1 (more or less, once you reach such odds, it doesnt matter if they are one or two more...) and they won! 30 wounded, 2 deads, for about 5 to 6 thousands french slained!

I must say, it is really a great game. I'm eager to see when Rome Total war will come out. For medieval there is a demo, I think. Very simple one, but if you like it, you should try, because it is a very good game (except for the diplomacy that is really poor). And I think they are being sold very cheap now

I got KotOR (Xbox) for Christmas but still haven't opened it .... can't get away from GalCiv. LOL LOL

As for TBS games, the last I tried -- prior to galciv -- was Alpha Centaury. I miss the diplomacy in there. After AC, I only played Shogun, and then Medieval for almost 2 years: until galciv was out.

Just got a reply from CariElf regarding my submission problem. She suggests I re-install Stardock Central and then try again. She said it should reset my dlls and everything should work again. I guess I'll try that when I get home. I hope it works.

Terl: Yes, I played Galactic Battlegrounds some, but I think I was playing Jedi Knight II or maybe Pool of Radiance just before I got GalCiv. It just seems like I'm forgetting something... :notsure:

True enough. I have not touched my playstation for a while. I will be signing up for the drengin upgrade next week (payday, hurray!) so I can get AP. I also want to check out Corporate Machine and, when it comes out, Political Machine.

Yes it is a great game! I can talk about it for hours. They have a very friendly forum too, with a players average age of 35-40 (when I used to visit the forum). It actually went from 15 years old to something like 65!
The game itself is very beautiful. You can check for some screenshots at www.totalwar.org (it is better than the official site, in my opinion). You can get some huge battles, with 1000 guys on each side, at the same time on the battlefield (and reinforcements awaiting). The most impressive is that your troops are organised by groops of 60-100 men (depending on their type), and each soldier has its own stats! Afetr a battle you can know exactly how many ennemies a particular soldier killed or captured. And if he is an archer, you can know just how many friendly fire casualties he caused.
in medieval, the developpers added some role play aspects, as if one of your generals killed all his prisonners at the end of a battle, he would get a reputation for being merciless, and that will scare enemy troops in his next battle.
Shogun is more a game of battles, while medieval is half tactical, half strategical.
As a final word, I must say that these two are the only games I ever saw my wife playing 10 hours straight ( ). Actually it is the only one I really saw her playing at all. So I guess that's worth something!

I forgot to ask: have you been having trouble connecting to stardock with SDC? I ask because latelly I've been having a connection/registration failed message. So I'm affraid to submit a game and loose it in the process...

I guess I've been fortunate .... never any submission problems .... so far!

I haven't had problems either, but I do not use SDC except to get updates. I have my homepage set to GalCiv though Got to have the priorities right

Cool! I just noticed I have a medal I know I never earned, former top 25. I have never been higher than what I am now. I hope the Inspector General doesn't catch me
