On Windows 2000 I have a problem with besirc and WindowBlinds. Seems Beseric uses some non standard title bar and menus that would get into a fight with WindowBlinds. You'd see the Besircs title bar, then WindowBlind's, then back to besircs. I had to exclude besirc from WB skinning.

This is kind of tough cause you're comparing apples and oranges. WinStep is very specific. Its aim is to be extremely productive via a popup menu system and tabbed program launcher. Assuming you're using a WB skin that includes the the skins for the XP start menu and task bar, and assuming you're running ObjectBar... 1. Go to the ObjectBar Theme Browser. 2. Scroll down and select/single-click the Windows XP (blahblahblah V1.0) 3. Pulldown the Styles combobox at the bottom of the dialogbox and select *Use WindowBinds Skin* 4. Then press OK. I'd never thought I'd see a closeup of a bulldog pooping on a rug on TV. Ozzy looks like he's completely spaced and incoherent. His eyes are always unfocused and staring into the distance. Oh, and I don't mean to condone the use of cracked software. What I'm specifically referring to is the patched theme dll that allows Windows XP to use MS Styles (which is really what a Styles XP skin is) other than those developed by MSFT.

I think there are a bunch of these theme.dlls floating around. I think the Styles XP website even offers one for free if you don't want to purchase the Styles XP product. (I don't really know what Styles XP offers over just using the modified DLL). Wincustomize does not have a Styles XP section, If you want you can upload it at http://www.deviantart.com or http://www.skinz.org, They have sections for Styles XP, though I don't know if they call thoese sections Styles XP or MS Styles.

It's been a year or so since I've used it (wish I had my trusty ADO book but its at work) That said: So you're saying that in previous cases, you've been able to enumerate through the recordset AFTER its corresponding connection has been closed? Style Builder creates MSStyles skins which can be used by WindowsXP using Styles XP or the cracked themes DLL that bypasses the digital signature verification (which is pretty much what Styles XP just does anyways).

I assume the DLL does ADO calls. Asking the obviously stupid here but does the function close the connection when it returns (thereby invalidating the live recordset)? Maybe the function should instead return a disconnected recordset?

Are they doing anything special beyond being yet another Linux distro bundled with WINE? Is there some sort of tighter/friendlier integration between the OS and WINE as opposed to just installing WINE afterwards? Just curious 'cause as an admited newbie I don't see the difference.

I'm not sure if this makes sense or not as this may make things more complicated. but what about offering simple and advanced modes? Simple mode lists them by what they do and would prominantly display some information about what it does and what program they need as well as how to install the skin (sort of a friendly standard mini-faq/tutorial for each category). That screenshot shows WinStep which is composed primarliy of two piece of software. the popup menus are actually NextStart. That thing in the middle of the bottom of the screen actually is WorkShelf.The clock shown in the upper right is the WorkShelf clock module. I never cared for the rating system and I've never rated a skin. I just comment on the skin. The ratings are too definitive for something that is really subjective. Just because a skin is not suited to someone's tastes doesn't mean it's poor. I was looking at the DesktopX news group and Brad posted a script example a while back that downloads wincustnews.xml file and applies an XSL stylesheet against it to produce a desktop x object that displays the Wincustomize news items on the front page.
