Yep the Shire/Hobbiton/Bag End were dead on. It was the highlight of the movie for me. Rivendell was also amazing. Stylistically it looked light it was lifted right out of Alan Lee's paintings. The only thing I had issues with were Lothlorien. In the book, I remember Sam commenting on how it was vibrant and gold and filled with light, and how that contrasted with his preconceived notions of Elves having to do with moons and starlight. Dethnite, I read somewhere that the first cut of Fellowship was 4 and 1/2 hours. I don't know how accurate that is though. According to what I've read, we can expect the DVD to be released in August 2002.

I dislike the sounds as well. Usually because I'm listening to music on my PC at I work and I don't need to here "glorps", "bloops", "glongs", "shwishes", and "klangs" in the middle of a song.
Okay. I'll throw my hat into the purist ring (Hell, I got between a hundred to two hundred or so various Tolkien and Tolkien-related books going back to the 60's). And I enjoyed the movie. Yeah it was tough to disengage the internal book-references in my head. That's why I'm gonna see it again now that I know what to expect and enjoy it even more without all that internal background purist chatter going on in my head.
BTW, Alan Lee's and John Howe's artistic hands could be seen all over the movie. Very cool.
I just got back from it a couple of hours ago. It's really amazing. It was tough at first since I know the books so well, and had a hard time trying to not consiously compare the movie against it (with the changes made to it). However, as the movie progresses the emotional weight kicks in until the end where I was finally completely emotionally invested in it(and now got a weight another year). I just wish it could have been longer to allow for some more of the quieter leisurly moments

I just saw a few people driving around using IT/Ginger/Segway in the parking lot (their R&D office is two buildings down from mine in N.H.). It looked pretty cool. I wanted to pull over and ask to try it. Though I think their wheel chair was far cooler and would have more of an immediate benefit.

Whirled peas. Hehe. For Christmas, I just pretty much want to hang out with friends and family. Listen to Christmas carols, watch the snow fall. That's all I need.
Microsoft has made a lot of poor GUI decisions. My personal pet peeve is that windows text is also used for text on dialog boxes. This makes using dark skins problematic. I'd like the windows text to be black on white, but dialog text then gets turned to black, which is hard to read on a dark color.

I wasn't gonna watch any LOTR previews or stills, but I got the will power of a gnat. I read the Hobbit when I was 11 ( 1976 for me) then read LOTR when I was 13 or so, and it pretty much left me in a daze from which I still haven't fully recoverd. There's something about reading those books at that age that results in some sort of permanent imprinting.
There is nothing as blissful as chocolate. There's an awesome chocolateer on Newbury St. in Boston. Everytime I'm in the area I go in a get a few pieces ($10 !!!). Just once, I'd love to walk in, slap a couple $100 bills down on the table and do a face-plant right into the chocolate counter.

Okay, I'm throwing my hat into the Lord of the Rings crowd. I've been a Tolkien junkie for 25 years and got so much Tolkien/Tolkien-related books its kinda embarrasing. From the stills and previews it looks amazing. Hobbiton and Bag End look incredible, right out of a John Howe painting ('course he did a lot of the set design along with Alan Lee...)
Actually after using the Dinks skin I got a new-found appreciation from them. Especially Winmenu and WBamp. It took be a bit to set up winmenu with all my commonly used apps but now its extremely handy.

BTW, if you folks play games like Diablo, here's the game that served as the original inspiration called nethack. You can download it and play in a DOS box. The original version of this used to be included with various Unix distributions way back in the 80's. http://www.nethack.org/

This brings back lots of memories. I remember being completly infatuated with this game. I used to love playing text-based adventure games.
