Correct, there is a 50MB cap, and you shouldn't come close to that with a single icon set. The "server has been reset" error is not what you get when you've reached your limit. It's what you get when you have a bad connection to a web site. Perhaps you hit it at a time when there were too many other users downloading as well. I'd suggest trying again later. Just for the record, subscribers to the site have more bandwidth available to them.

You're refusing to pay $20 to register software that you like well enough to use beyond the trial period, and then complaining that the nag screen is costing you customers? Actually, I think you're describing WinStyles, which allows you to apply WindowBlinds, icons, wallpaper, and more all at once. DesktopX is a desktop replacement, but it doesn't skin your programs. They probably would want to post it on other sites, since its purpose is to promote the festival. You definately need to discuss that with them though, and not just assume it. They may want to post it under their own name, for example. Or maybe there are sites where they cannot post it due to other contractual obligations they have that you might not be aware of. Better safe than sorry.
SkinStudio is definately the way to go, in my opinion. If you were to go the notepad route, you would need a big fat manual explaining all the text files, sections, and attributes. As far as I know, there isn't one. SkinStudio is as easy to use and as powerful as they say. It takes a little time to get used to it, but once you do, it's a piece of cake. While we await a screenshot, I'll take a guess at the problem. Try adjusting the content margins on the section of the start menu where the text doesn't line up.
Unless I'm misunderstanding, all you have to do is grab your taskbar and drag it to the right side of the screen. Make sure it is unlocked (right-click an empty area to find out) and then grab it by an empty area and simply drag it. As for actually skinning it, SkinStudio has sections to put images for horizontal (top and bottom) and vertical (left and right) taskbars.

I agree with BoXXi. It looks like a great base. The cutouts on the sides need some smoothing out, and maybe another layer of detail on top would be nice. I'd also like to see the buttons in place and maybe some mocked up track information in the window. As a side note, every skin I've designed professionally has become the property of whoever paid me to make it. I don't have the right to post it anywhere without their permission. I even get permission just to show screenshots of them

I don't quite understand the question. Where is the menubar, toolbar, and links you're referring to, and where is the button shadow?
Looks cool! Maybe the plants should just be DX objects that wave back and forth. You could even stash a menu in them or something.
It sounds like one of those X-Mouse settings in the TweakUI component of Microsoft PowerToys. You might want to check there.
I'm not a wallpaper artist myself, but here's what I would do. After you've rendered your image, open it up in Photoshop (or some graphics editor), save it as a JPG, and adjust the image quality setting until you find a good balance of quality and file size.
I would pay for addional versions of MetalX2. This is an approach that no one has really tried yet, that I know of. It sounds as viable as any. At least with your approach, the user can actually try out the skin, in a sense, before buying it.
