If you're using a non-standard font, that is probably the issue. They don't all play nice like the basic Windows fonts do.

I believe the trick is to use a lot of transparency on the right side so that there is no background showing behind where the text usually is, then set the right content margin on the right panel big enough so that there is only room for the icons to show.

You've done everything right. The problem has something to do with the characters in your particular URL. For some reason, the script that converts the URL to a hyperlink is stopping part way through the string. Hopefully T-Man and Co. can figure it out.

Happy (with the exception of rising costs) RoadRunner customer since '99. I've never noticed any difference between upload and download speeds. Everything is always fast for me.

Haha, very funny. Universe Metal has a rectangular, metallic gradient scrollbar with vent-like glyphs. Rectangular scrollbars with vent-like glyphs are as common as the color blue. The Hulk scrollbar has a different gradient, a different bevel, a different background, is a different color, and has 2 vents instead of the 3 Universe Metal's scroll bar has. I thought I made it quite clear that I do not want to change more than my start button. There is no way to only change the start button that I am aware of. Your only option is to change your entire skin, as GreatSilverWyrm said.

The file you upload is the dxtheme file itself. You do need to include written permission for anything you include that you did not create.

I wish there was a screenshot to look at for reference. If I remember correcty, the font looks a lot like Courier New, which comes installed with Windows.

There is no point in comparing them regarding which is more realistic. Star Trek is set in our distant future, while Star Wars is set a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Obviously, realism was not one of its goals.

I personally like to mix things up a bit, but I think the average user typically prefers the buttons to be in their usual locations. You could always add a subdesign to appease those people though.
