Follow-up: Yes, it turns out I hadn't rebooted yet, so the nvidia codec was ONLY being used for mpg2 playback in WMP11, while the MS codec was still being used for DreamScene. Now that I have rebooted, the DreamScene playback is a wee bit choppy under the nvidia codec for me when I try and play both WMP and DreamScene MPG2's simultaneously. Also of interest is that the "pause when IE is fullscreen" behavior has returned after the reboot. Doh!

Thanks for the tip dcyphure. I too saw a marked improvement by installing the nvidia b233 purevideo mpeg2 decoder. Not only did this give me a stable CPU usage, but I can now play another mpg2 video in WMP at the same time as the mpg2 DreamScene is rocking and rolling. I'm only running a 3.2ghz p4 with HT, so not even a true dual core. And as a side benefit, the dreamscene no longer pauses

Based on a post in another thread, I've installed the Nvidia PureVideo codec to handle mpg2 video. Not only did it drop my CPU issues and improved smoothness, but I can now play an mpg video in windows media player 11 WHILE I have both of my other monitors playing the same DreamScene mpg video. I'm running a Quadro FX 4000 with 256mb ram (equivalent of the 6800 series) using the new 100.64 drivers (nvidia.com) on a simple hyperthreaded P4 at 3.2 ghz. My dual monitors are 1600x

Are these configured as seperate monitors, what nvidia calls DualView, or as one big horizontal span? Depending on how you configure this, it may not be able to create one huge video image in the memory space of one adapter. On mine (dualview config) the video "repeats" on each monitor seperately. So, does it run fine with two monitors enabled on the SAME card? Or does it fun fine with one monitor enabled on each of the two adapters? That might help.

malicious dreamz, The FREE video player called VLC has a "Wallpaper" feature that does something very similar to this under XP. It's also a fair bit better optimized that DreamScene is right now, as I can play uncompressed video at full res as backgrounds under VLC and XP. I expect DreamScene on Vista to catch up of course. (I've posted this elsewhere, but it bears repeating here) One more note for DreamScenes...and this goes for all Windows Media related issues. CHECK YOUR CODECS I had installed the "Vista-friendly" trial of NERO only to find that it replaces the Windows Media MPG2 codec with it's own. The Nero codec caused my CPU use to go from 12% to 32% on my dual monitor setup. And, of course, there still doesn't seem to be an easy way to add/disable extraneous cod

There does seem to be some thread prioritization issues still. We'll have to see them iron that out as drivers, codecs, and this software under Aero become more refined. (from my dual monitor post) One thing I found right off the bat was a classic Windows Media related issue. CHECK YOUR CODECS I had installed the "Vista-friendly" trial of NERO only to find that it replaces the Windows Media MPG2 codec with it's own. The Nero codec caused my CPU use

It also creates files with permissions structures that CAN'T BE FIXED from XP. OOPS! I have to reinstall a Vista test partition just to clear up an old, well, test partition...DOH! 8P

Another interesting byproduct of dual monitors is the pause on fullsceen application behavior. It makes sense to pause the animation when going fullscreen in Internet Explorer, etc. but DreamScene pauses BOTH monitors at the same time, hehe. So, you go fullscreen with IE on Monitor 1, only to have monitor 2 freeze. So, a toggle to disable this behavior would be appreciated, gents. Thanks.

Note that all this software does is "bundle up" an already created animation with author/description/link information. To actually convert existing animations into the mpeg 1/2 format that DreamScene seems to like best, I recommend TMPGEnc Plus from Pegasys. VERY good Professional grade MPG encoding quality and compatibility. http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/index.html

I'm having similar issues. I've been able to create mpgs of lower bitrate to help the issue out, but i don't expect end users to do this. I think you've hit the nail on the head by requesting the ability to have this working on one monitor or the other, or both (current default behavior). I gotta say though that I A) love this thang, and B) think the tiling setting is quite trippy with video, haha. PS I know that you are still kicking the tires on this for single monitor set

Actually, acoustic/echo cancellation code is supposed to address this, since the computer knows what sound is coming out of its own speakers and what is coming in through its own microphone. It should "subtract" the audio coming from the speakers from anything coming in through the microphone before processing by default in that case. This default behavior should have kept Vista from "talking to itself". <img src="http://images.stardock.com/wc/smiles/Smile.gif" border=0 align="absmidd

I've been collecting links to Dreamscene suitable videos (high quality, minimal camera moves, no people or animals to distract the eye) for Dreamscene. I look forward to its official release so I will have a site/gallery/location to post these links, or converted videos if needed. I've been testing them using VLC's "wallpaper" feature, which is the closest thing to Dreamscene for XP. It doesn't respect the transparency of WindowBlinds glass-like windows, but it handles ObjectDock an

Does anyone else find it odd that the profiles come up empty (unless that's just a bug) and the 2nd reply with all the info is from a visitor who just joined last night? Reeks of spam to me. And all three of them (the poster and the two "helpful" replies) have the exact same "My Links" items for profiles created Today. Ahem. Yeah, this i

I only saw a 5 second clip of the Dreamscene there around minute 24. Was there more somewhere? I'm already sold on the animated wallpaper, I was just hoping they'd spend a little more time on something that actually makes people go OOOH, WOW (like Dreamscene) rather than everything else with was one of the most YAWN inducing presentations I've ever seen.
