#12 Thanks for your comments. Not questioning your statements-- clearly I don't know enough. Your're very specific, even comparing effectiveness in percentages. Do you work in this field, or maybe do you have some sources I could look at? Again, not questioning your data-- how did you come to know such detail? My other questions will sound dumb, but here goes... What is Sandboxie? Do VBA32, Kaspersky, DRweb &/or Safe'n'S

re #7 Does DSL automatically serve as a hardware firewall? I once had satellite internet & it functioned as a firewall because of how it was put together. As for the rest, I hear ya. Substitute McAfee for AVG & I have the same set of stuff.

Hey Meowy, I got on the Fedora IRC- no need to go thru the excrutiating details here-- I think I'm pointed in the right direction now. Yesterday I had no idea where to start. Thanks for the thread. Will update you on this project!

Got the answer to the VFAT part-- "In Fedora, vfat includes a range of file systems, such as FAT-16 and FAT-32, found on most removable media. External hard drives usually contain vfat (FAT-32) file systems." Their documentation is a bit dated-- xp doesn't support fdisk anymore

Arg, oh arg... found in Fedora documentation: Installation from Diskettes There is no option to install Fedora Core from diskettes. Now, I can understand not being able to put the install on diskettes, but surely there's a way to make a boot diskette & from there install from hard drive (like windows used to need a floppy boot in order to install it from a CD).

The Fedora site says Linux partitions need to be formatted in VFAT. Never heard of VFAT—is it the same as FAT32? (I hope.) Don’t have a CD burner but I’m assuming there’s a way I can make a boot-floppy & install to the Linux partition from images saved to a different partition. From the Fedora site I got the impression that it’s best to get the files via BitTorrent. Never used it before, but I installed it earlier tonight.

Oooo... you may be sorry you asked! My situation is that I got a 200 GB disc for my birthday. Also still have my 30 GB, so I may not have the world's newest setup, but there's a little room ot play around. I was planning to try Linux to see what it's like when I stumbled across your thread. I'm good with XP but a complete noob to Linux. So here are some noob questions. I was just reading some of the basics on the Fedora site. How

I've used Zone Alarm for ~3 years, but wouldn't mind having virus scan & firewall from the same place. If AVG is that good, maybe I'll jump over when my current subscription ends. Somebody I know suggested running windows firewall & ZA together, but it sounded scary to me [insert skeptical smiley here]. Anybody ever try this combination? Sir Bichur: When you had both Norton & AVG, did you disable Norton while you ran AVG?

Don't know when I've had so many virus scan updates as between Saturday & today. From what I've read, the current onslaught is affecting Win 2000 systems. Is there a new XP problem too, or is it limited to Win 2000? What virus scanner do you use? Does it do the job? I've used McAfee for years, mainly because it was what we had where I worked back when I decided to get a virus scanner. Never had any problems with it, & it has caught some

I got OD this spring & it wasn't long before I downloaded LaST IPs in several colors- later also got FauxS-X IPs in a couple of colors. Just last week, I got each set in red because I knew one or the other would be just right with JJ's Mustang WB. (Both are great with it.) At the time I thougt how great if you had time to extend the size of both sets to today's range. It would give you a chance to add the polish of a few years more of skill & technol

I don't remember the sources but have seen stuff on podcasting w/ BitTorrent. Don't have how-to links, but can recommend a podcast-catcher-- iPodder, by the GNU folks. No worries about tracking, spyware, etc. http://ipodder.sourceforge.net/index.php Besides, somebody made a great dock icon the other day.
