I think it boils down to 'that's where the competition is' and if a game isn't on Steam then people who do use Steam aren't going to see it in the store. Obviously.

Well, basically there's a certain program which starts with S and ends with team. ;) When I closed it down the crashing stopped. But I haven't really established if it is doing anything or simply eating up memory that GC2 needs.
Game has been stable for a couple of hours now. Huh. I know what might be causing the crash now but I dunno why or how it is even possible so, it cannot be! I'll have to do a proper experiment when I have time.
I've managed to get a little bit further with my test game today although I had another crash. Still no idea what's doing it, debug.err hasn't shown any obvious clues. I'll keep looking into it, anyway. The Krynn are getting hammered in this game. I haven't done much with their tech tree so that's probably the cause. Anyway, I've gone through and changed some things in their tech tree but obviously I won't see the effects
Indeed. So far as I know, all it will mean is it won't log your ridiculous number of hours, 'cause there's no Steam achievements for it or anything.
Some keyboards also have PrintSrceen as an Alt key, which means you need to have that down as well.
Resumed testing, had Dread Lords crash. I'll pick it up again when I have time, I guess.
My test game crashed. Don't know why, but I have the feeling there were a shedload of ships in the game because turn processing was getting quite slow.
Playing a game of GalCiv 2. Raking in cashola from my neutral Arceans and their trade routes (thank you, random events). Playing XCOM. Cursing at the number of times my XCOM soldiers miss. Jumping on the forums, writing a post. Back to playing GalCiv 2. There are some days when I don't play a TBS game, but when I do, I prefer GalCiv 2. ;)
My test game shows that minors are now willing to research Hyperdrive, which is good news.
If there are new hull pieces entirely then I imagine it would go in the mod folder. If they're just built out of existing pieces, My Games\GC2TwilightArnor\shiptemplates is the place to throw templates, while My Games\GC2TwilightArnor\ships is the place to put actual ship designs. Templates and designs are not backwards or forwards compatible so far as I know, the format of them changed a couple of times. So early designs (from GC2: Dread Lords, the base game) won'
The test game stopped being fun when the Iconians pulled out the knife and stabbed me in the back. Considering I was basically already fighting a standstill war to the Zylons, it was the final nail in my coffin. The Arceans have a few problems. Even though I've given them a speed buff, and it's easy enough to crank out low-tech fighters, the early-game weapons quickly get outmoded and other races quickly gain a better logistics score. I found that I was str
Fear the wrath of the Carinoids... The only snag is, minor races don't seem all that interested in propulsion - or they've had that rug pulled from under them because the major races already have Hyperdrive. So I will definitely need to look into that.
You're welcome. :)
Steam's game updater isn't very informative. It doesn't say 'Your preferences have been reset' it just fires up the game and has me deal with it. Which likely as not means having to restart the game to alter, for example, the AA setting. Tell you what, I'll just not bother. I'll go play something which doesn't require so much hoop-jumping. I know that must seem such a petty nitpick and prefs resets don't happen that
It's because it has the Soldier's Cloak equipped by default, which now provides +10 Spell Resist and needs one crystal in the unit design. Haven't checked the other scout designs.
Also, woosh, 0.85 is upon us. :)
Something that I feel could be improved on is the AI's response to a difficult world environment. It really needs to prioritise building a fortress when many of the units it will fight against will be a higher level, both for the sheer capability to crank units but also for improved unit quality.
My latest test game (running 5E) is turning out well. Not so good for me, because there are a lot of wars being waged, and as usual I've been a bit slow on the research so I am just getting to the weapons. The good news is that when I do get my weapons I'll be able to start rocking this galaxy with my Arceans. Oh yeah. [e digicons]B)[/e]
I was thinking more along the lines of SimCity 2013 but yeah, those too. Actually I read that you can get VS2003 to work under Windows 7 without running in a virtual machine, it's a pain in the behind and you need a roll of duct tape and some christmas lights.
I'm not wild about AI 8 either but it does put up a hell of a fight with all those ships. I think the important thing that we found out is that the AI isn't completely broken, it's just acting on some incorrect assumptions. Things seem to have really improved with Fallen Enchantress, there's a lot of work going into balancing and fixing and ay least with the expansion, a regular pace of updating. I just hope the testers can keep up with the changes. ;)</p
Funny thing I noticed today, first time playing GC2 in a while. Because minor races get that headstart in 5E, they build a military, and this means that right now the Carinoids are giving me a double minus for my lack of relative military strength. When I open up negotiations to see if I can bribe them to go to war, they tell me that the Akilians are even stronger than they are. What? Who? Never heard of them. I expect they're extorting the Drengin or
I've released the v5E version that I've had sitting here for three months so you can take it for a spin, it's mostly just minor race tweaking.
All I've got is 64-bit, 4GB of RAM and two cores. And the last two aren't going to change any time soon. In fact, it's quite probable that I won't be able to afford any new games even if they do cater to that bare minimum.
Thing is, opinion of AI playing style is quite subjective. Although I have played a lot of test games, it's difficult to say that an AI plays well, even when it is winning. We all know that in a game of GalCiv 2, there are random events which conspire to keep a dominant player in check. When an AI player is dominant you can usually count on the human player coming up with some way of defeating them such as blowing up a few stars, deploying matching defences, or just a re
