I read in another thread devoted to the game, that you could research "ice beams" in the beam weapon tree, so it sounds like it doesnt want to be taken too seriously on the sci fi front. I realize that such terms are only cosmetic and its all nonsensical on some level, but I think you should generally try to aim for a level of sophistication in terminolology slightly higher than a "Space Ghost" cartoon, if you want your game to be taken seriously by the sci fi strategy gaming crowd. I

Thanks for the input guys! However, is there anyone who hasn't joined the site within the last 20 days thats playing this game? I'm not saying anything, but you know how the web hype thing goes. Some input from some members who didn't join this site right around the release (or the day before) of LE would carry a lot of weight. I know...I'm a suspiscious bastard...
Great patch! Was there any update between this and retail DA? I keep looking for an option to disable or revert the new espionage tax system so I can play the game again and check out the new changes. Is there any chance that was added in a previous patch that I missed?
Yeah, Ive been watching the forums...I actually gave the LE website link out in my OP. But theres virtually no activity on the official boards...maybe two owners posting with any regularity, and very little information available on the game otherwise. I know its low profile and they had some sort of snafu with Strategy First (their original distributor), but I'd really expect to see some more activity for a new game, so I'm still a bit leery. The ship design aspect looks interes
I thought I'd check in here for any word of mouth anyone wants to give on "Lost Empire" from Pollux/Paradox. WWW Link It seems like it *might* be a satisfying GC2 clone, but its too low profile to expect many reviews anytime soon. Anyone have any feedback they want to offer? Theres no demo that I can see...I don't want to buy it completely blind.
Well, the age of the Turn based Strategy has seen better days, unfortunately...to get the really good ones youll have to go back quite a few years, GC2 notwithstading. Recently... ... Id have to recommmend Medieval 2. The turn based component is not on Par with GC2 or Civ, but it has undergone a lot of expansion, and coupled with the stellar tactical battlefield sims, its great. Be sure to patch it though. If youre dead set on a "Civ" type game, Id encourage you give Eu
Allright, here you go...SAGA: WWW Link Little is known about it at this point, but it specifically bills itself as an MMORTS. Closed alpha testing is underway. They appear to have former Starcraft people on board. I personally dont think theres any good way to pull this concept off. The whole notion of strategy gaming is assumes two sides starting off on more or less balanced footing...which defies the notion of persis
"Tactical" as opposed to "RTS", in my mind, means "pause and issue orders, resume" games...else you would have specified turn based strategy. Unless you just mean pure battles without resource management and teching. In either case, I think youre looking for the Total War games, Rome or the recent Medeival 2. Both are great after patching.
Hi! I was wondering what the best way to cancel my pre-order was. Not trying to make any kind of statement here... I just lost interest, at least for the time being. Sales? Someplace else?
The option to turn off the new espionage system please. I appreciate you asking.
In contrast to my pessimism from last month, this time around, Im thinking earlier. Im going to forecast Mar.20 The reason for this is two fold: 1)A month is not the time that someone would push back if there were severe problems, just polish issues. I get the idea they were 98% ready to go anyways, just had some rough edges to sand. Stardock has a record now of releasing earlier than projected dates...they really will try to make everyone happy if possible
Bingjack, you may want to revisit the thread title. The point was to help the AI and make conquest more challenging. I'm finding it hard to imagine under what conditions not having AI fleets in orbit would be an advantage for the player. Maybe you need to revisit the thread. Several players now have given you examples that it speeds planetary conquest. I'm playing a game where the Drengin have at least two m
Heh, it depends on what Difficulty youre playing on. The harder you set the game, the faster opposing civs develop tech, the more money they have, and therefore the more prolifically they trade amongst themseves and the entire map just runs away with technology . Of course, disabling it, there are going to be a few civs that you simply cant keep up with. But the player will always be able to make better decisions about what to research, and work to specifically counter those civs. With the
Hi! love it it when the AI builds Orbital fleet managers on their worlds. I just means I can knock that world out and take it over in one turn, as opposed to 3 or 4. Have you ever tried to disband your fleet after it destroyed the real ships in orbit, and then attacked those remaining puny defenders with each of your ships separately? <IMG onload="setImageSize_onLoad(650,this);" src="http://images.stardock
I consider Orbital fleeting a liability in most cases. As someone else mentioned, if you dont have sensor nets in place so you cant see the enemy coming, you deserve what you get. Since I can see the enemy coming, Im goign to sally forth and knock them out, if Im in the position to do so. If I NOT in the position to do so (they have a superior force), I then want to hold the planet as long as possible until reinforcements get there...In which case orbital fleeting is a liability. I w
I've noticed that the AI seems to value the colonization techs and Treaties a lot less. Well, they seem to value everything less across the board, in the sense that everythings more expensive. But, treaties were clearly broken before (twice a game you could raid another civs techstores at will, and pull totally even with everyone else, without doing any research yourself. One good thing Ill say about the treaty trading, is that now the AI
Actually, the hefty system requirements for SupCom put me off. Its just not for average/marginal systems. As the owner of an average/marginal system, I realize Im out. It could be great, but Ill never know...the demo ran like crap for me. My loss, Im sure. However the CC3 demo I found surprisingly appealing...its much easier to "get into" from a story/single player standpoint. I'm a sucker for old school live action full motion video though. Both games seemed like "another RT
Well, its difficult to quantify...like I said the AI *seems* to trade just as prolifically amongst itself as ever, while its tougher for me. As I play most of my games on Obscene anymore, this could simply be a factor of them having the "Huge Buttloads of Cash" (tm) and tech to trade that they do. Maybe the situation is further exacerbated by the possibility that the AI is aware it has all that money and is smart enough to know it doesnt really need my money. I dont know what the AIs capabil
Its much stingier in 1.5x...I definitely notice this. Your "incredible ability in diplomacy "gives you..well, not much. Youd need to really be over the top in your diplo ability to trade for medium range or higher techs now...and you wont be seeing many "sweetheart deals", even from your treaties (though there are still exploits...wait til an economic boom event and see what you can get for your economic treaty...its like christmas...the korath gave me all of their protected techs and their ful
This is why, to a good approximation, defences stop 2x their rating of weapons. The actual value depends on the actual defence rating versus individual weapon damage. For ships with little defence, it can be as low as 1x, on average. For ships with lots of defence, it approach 2x, but is usually probably 1.9 or 1.95x. Ok...so defenses block twice their rating on average. That sounds pretty damn good to me, and probably explains while I was able to shut
Ah, yes, thats what I feared. Damn. If Stardock patches the game to make Espionage optional, I will buy DA. Otherwise not. Regardless of what I think, on this issue, DA is worth picking up for an entire host of other reasons, and you should always check things out for yourself. I dont like the new espionage system...it should be optional...but I wouldnt go back to playing DL for anything.
I dont speak mathenese. Your furious spamming of facts and logic has made me confused and angry. What was I complaining about again? I'm sorry. But it does matter. Heh, it was a round about, tounge in cheek compliment, just so theres no misunderstanding. Brad's arcane game systems baffle me...but my brain is small and I'm easily distracted by small shiny objects.
Its a money sink. It delivers no real value (except as a pesticide) just like In DL...except now its forced on the player. The new busywork assocoated with it is simply a novelty, and shouldnt really be mistaken for any real depth. I play epic games on large maps, so I become a highly ranked Civ by about halfway through the game, with many civs still left, and lengthy battles to fight. Once you become one of the top 3 civs, youll be blasted with spies every few turns, forced to us

I don't see what the big deal is with the Yor? 10 bonus points is the same as what most other races get. Their Super is nothing particularly to write home about. They get 10 points (as much as any race) on top of the best allotment of inherent abilities (which cant be duplicated anywhere else), bonuses, and startech in the game. Their superability is not the best in the game, buts its highly decent...especialy when factored with all the other stuff
