I have a horrible, crippling feeling gnawing at me, telling me that the game is going to become my new obsession and consume my time like... a time-consuming thingy. Thousands of hours if GCII is any indication. I can see it now, dashing and/or limping home from my classes to see if a new build is released, only to see that there's nothing :'C
One ... more ... turn

Since snaking to forests to build a logging camp or rivers for a dock is no longer allowed, the only purpose of snaking at all anymore is to put nearby resources in range of your city, and that's kinda weak tea considering your borders will expand anyway, so makes sense to give up on snaking altogether.

UTC-0800 [PDT] Unfortunately, availability is very limited ... I work the night shift which has me gone from 1730 PDT to 0600 PDT (0130 - 1400 GMT) on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights into the following mornings, and occasionally Wednesday nights. 1-2 hours between work and sleep is woefully inadequate to play a TBS, so these nights/mornings are generally not good for me with the exception of Saturday morning after work, as I can stay up several hours since I don'

Kudos to you on this, Brad. Rare is a person who understands it isn't just feeling bad. I was officially diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder in 1999 when I was 23, after having been "pre-diagnosed" in kindergarten in 1981 when I was 5. Unfortunately, I presently cannot afford even office visits to get prescriptions for the SSRIs that I do, indeed, need to cope -- along with treatments for my migraine, anxiety, psoriasis and hopefull

This is hardly something new or revolutionary ... VR headsets have been forecast as the next big thing for a couple of /decades/ now, as has 3D, but the fad comes and goes. I don't see any particular reason why it might /really/ take off this time compared with all the previous fizzle-outs. I definitely wouldn't throw out your PC-with-a-monitor game development studios just yet (and I certainly hope you don't), but I'm certainly not an expert.

I like Sins okay, but the AI is definitely lackluster for singl

Brad: Just out of curiousity, since you seem much more relaxed about sharing details other publishers would probably be appalled by ... have you ever seen significant bumps in sales of older games (like GC2) that correspond with fan-made mods? More than just a few dozen or so participating on a thread about a mod, do mods actually generate a significant bump in the baseline sales for the game?
Well don't worry then, TESO's engine doesn't approach the quality of Skyrim's. That's another issue I have with MMO's: they typically dial back the graphics so the game can run on the most machines.
Skyrim greatly impressed me for how good it looks even on lower-end machines. It looks good with a decent framerate on my $500 homebrew PC, whereas Dragon Age: Origins looked less good and had a

Well, I guess that might count as a 4x.
While there isn't much exploration, per se, you have to survey for minerals, gold and fuel. There's a g

I am curious to see a Skyrim-level engine's render of the parts of Tamriel we haven't seen since Morrowind, but my curiousity isn't strong enough to pay an MMO subscription. I'll probably sate myself watching TESO fans' "Let's Plays" on Youtube.

A mechanic I find missing from TBSes is an overlay showing the last turn's moves (or replay). This is very frustrating when you can place a unit on 'sentry' mode to awaken when a hostile unit enters its sensor range, but the hostile unit scoots out of sensor range off-screen, so you don't see it -- but you get hassled to do something with your awakened unit, but you aren't allowed to know what it was your unit saw to wake it up. Some sort of overlay would help,

I'm no fan of MMOs, either. I gave a couple a try -- namely, Anarchy Online and Star Trek Online. Got bored quickly with AO, and quickly became disgusted with STO as well. I have enjoyed the Elder Scrolls games ever since Morrowind. I hope TESO won't mean an end to single player Elder Scrolls games, the way The Sims brought an effective end to the SimCity series (sorry to die hard fans, but SC5 is a pale imitation of its predecessors).

Remains to be seen. Its one thing to sculpt your own 'verse, like GalCiv or Elemental. I think trying to further the creation of someone else and retain the creators' vision expressed through various nuances its fans will go for is harder, and you won't know whether you've succeeded or failed until release.

My guess is beta would start no sooner than half a year after alpha, maybe even longer. I think Stardock learned its lesson with War of Magic on rushing things. I seem to recall the beta for WoM lasted a long time as well ... I was an early adopter of WoM so I got all the perks when Brad took his hat in hand to all of us. Lots of developers/publishers push out bad releases, but so few have the decency to make it right.
