Hey fellow - Peace and Happiness to you on your Birthday! Just wanted to thank you for your gifts of thought to the community - I read a lot of them and your opinion and creativeness is well admired by myself, whether or not I agree with you - it is always well thought out and well documented by actual gameplay examples, not just theoretical ramblings. I use some of the stuff you

MHO - It's a great fun game put out by a small independent company if you care to take the time to learn it - and don't mind missing some of the frills Larger Companies will add to their products because they can afford to. The Civ series has a Civlopedia, because they had the budget to put it in. The Galactopedia was a work of luv by a fan - as is the Wiki a work of luv by many fans - they are pretty damn good for fan based add ons. Want lots of bells and whistles?

Does population, under any circumstance, have ANY other function than providing tax ? Ie could you, if it was possible, have 0 population on all your planets and still get the same research output, production etc, than if you had 50 bil people on all of them ? Yes - but it would be a VERY expensive empire to maintain - either extreme. With very little pop on all worlds, the expenses would soon have you in the RED economically - with too much pop on all

@DoJ If you have auto-archive checked when you use SDC to update the game - then you can revert to the older versions using SDC. I beleive it is under the File Menu on the top left corner. May not be really quick - but it is easy. Just make sure to auto archive the newest update so you can revert back to it. Bad thing is the archives are rather large and can really eat up HDD space - take that into consideration.

On my 'ancient' video card, DA 1.6 b3 has already made a huge performance impact... In 1.6 b2 and prior versions, my framerates on an all abundant Medium Galaxy with 9 opponents were around 9-12 or worse zoomed in with most all eye candy except planet lights enabled...I played almost exclusively at Tactical View Level with the Icons... - with 1.6 b3 they improved to average over 20/25 - allowing me to play zoomed in more often. I can hardly wait to see what 1.6 b4 an

Yes. I do it all the time. I play mostly on Medium maps. I do it because i want to get my new worlds paying quickly - pop equals credits. Why have a planet of 12 billion full, not making use of it's ability to use the Malthusian rules fully ..and a newly conquered PQ 6 world with 120 million that will take years to grow to full size...the 12 billion pop world will replenish itself in weeks or months - with emigration now I have 18 Billion taxpayers in a short time frame. I m

@ ToS - Why do you still play the game if your opinion of it is so low? Why do you spend your time here continuosly criticizing the developers? No flame intended - just really curious. Apparently you don't know my opinion about the game. So let me try to enlighten you. On a conceptual level, no doubt the game sucks. I'm just being honest here, since you asked. It lacks imagination and depth for a *space* *

Not sure what happened, but 1.6 b3 incresed the framerates I was getting compared to 1.6 b2 and earlier by a appreciable amount. I have an older vid card - now I can actually zoon in and not have to play the game as much on Tactical level! Good job! And thanks for fixing the invisible ship bug! Can't wait for the 1.6 final. EDIT: Using Cntrl-N still can result in the reset the intelligence level of the aI from what the player originally set it as.

I am playing DA at Crippling difficulty/Medium maps now. I don't worry too much about deficit spending until I get my Planets going. I'll deficit spend almost every turn for the first few years. The sliders are key. I keep my research slider high, my social low, and my military set to 0 - I'll rush buy ships as needed. I never drop my production slider below 100% unless I need to climb out of debt. I keep my taxes set so I get 100% approval at all times during t

I was never able to get Civ 4 to run for any length of time on my PC. I finally lost interest and it is now shelfware. From the little I played, I did not like it. I loved Civ2 and Civ3 though. Civ4 seemed to be targeted to multiplayer - and I really don't care for multiplayer. To me, the game seemed 'dumbed' down in a lot of ways...it was smaller in scale compared to Civ3. On the plus side, a lot of people love it. To each their own...but to be honest Civ4 left a ba

Yes, if you have different views, by all means go there and post them. That is what Joe User is about. If it seems slanted to one side, then maybe others with differing views can help balance it out - but they have to start posting there.

The disappearing ships bug (since beta 1.6 v1) has been widely commented on in the Bug Forum. Basically, if you have single ships stacked with no fleet present, the ships disappear. The square looks like it is empty - you can click on it and it will bring up the ships in the details window. Any type ships. This happens with freigthers and starbases too. If a freightor ends it's turn on the Starbase, the base and freightoer disappear. Kinda scary to suddenly see a Resource I

Just declare war on them. As a caveat, you will take a reputation hit - declare war too many times and you will be labled a warmonger and the other aI's will probably be all over you.

Very nice - now, what about the other direction? If I'm asking for money, I'd like it to default to the maximum the AI is willing to give me for the items currently on the table It does! Goes both ways. Great feature...I know Solver from Apolyton will be happy...

Great! I'll try it out now! BTW - I saw no mention of the 'disappearing' ship graphic bug being fixed - this occurs when you stack ships that are not in fleets in Beta 1.6 v1. Just wanted to add, it took me a few minutes to figure out where to unzip all the files. For those who are technically less savvy: The 'GC2DarkAvatar.exe' and the 'Lib3D.dll' files go in the %drive%\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar (%drive% is a placeholder - enter your

Looks ok to me. I don 't think you will need the Liquid Cooling unless you plan to do some serious overclocking. A good case and fan setup should suffice. Don't skimp on the Processor fan - make sure it is a variable speed fan and check to see if your MB can be set up to adjust the speed. SpeedFan is a great freeware to check out that will do this for you - it can also be used for overclocking. May want to check out it's website - it has a list of motherboards that enable variable

Yes - you can install and play the game on both. The license allow this. No, once installed, you do not need to have the cd in the drive. Ever again. Yes, if you have a valid license, you can download the game using the Star Dock Central application at any time. All you need to do is register it - you can even misplace the license key, and the SDC application will send you a new one as long as you have a valid email adress registered to your Stardock account. Personally, I find the default set of Races to be fine. I like the fact that some aI are weaker than others. It gives the feel of playing against different human opponents. In a multiplayer situation, you do play against opponents of differing skill levels - the default race setup is a fair simulation of this. If one wants to try and play against more balanced opponents, the ability to make your own custom races to play against or to modify the default race abilities is in DA

My tips - take them for what they are worth - my experience only. In DA, the aI is much more intelligent than DL. You may want to drop a level or two until you can learn some of the differences in the two games. An all out colony rush is not a good strategy in DA. The economy is a lot harder to manage, and approval is harder to get. The pace of the game is much slower due to engines being nerfed. You don't have to worry so much about the aI getting fast ships soo

The Galactopedia is helpful. WWW Link As far as ship types, that is hard, becasue everytime you create a ship, it will be added to the Tech Tree. Unless you 'delete' the design in the ship builder, or delete the design from your hard drive, it will show up in the Tech Tree the next game you play as that race. You may never quite get the level of miniaturization, or combination of techs to get that ship.

Not on the minimap, I don't beleive...but read the On-Line Tip Guide Frogboy linked to here: WWW Link It has some neat ways of managing Planets from the SHIP/PLANET Screen. In over a year of playing, I had never used this part if the UI before...never took the time to explore it... but after reading that guide I am now using it to make things easier.
