I had the same problem with IE on one machine. Finally I deleted not only TIF but also cleared out some other IE rubbish left behind and deleted all WC cookies. That did it. I figured the cookies got corrupted. Can't remember, 3_4me, if you mentioned before if you cleared out IE and cookies and still could not connect. Might be worth giving another try.

Super: try emailing the site admins as advised above. I know I used to be able to access and download without problems when I wasn't even logged in. I haven't tried lately, though. Motion: why was saying "no" to the client not a viable option? How many site with really heavy traffic suffer from significant slow downs and occasional 404's? (For example, I clicked on a link to themexp to see something and gave up and I'm on broadband.) Is it unfair of those site owners that they don't get additional servers and increased bandwith? If they do, they need some revenue source to support the expenditures. Using a hosts file to block cookies and ads is another way to avoid ads, cookies, web bugs and other tracking stuff. "What if skinners know up-front that it's OK for other people to make variations of their skins? What do they have to lose? So what if someone else does the same skin with a different color variation or different buttons, etc. Who is getting hurt? The original artist wold still have the copyright to his own work." So a search for Whistler in the WindowBlinds library and see if you find anything you like. They're older skins though and don't support all the current WB features. Blackcomb is a newer updated whister type skin, although darker. You could do a search for Blackcomb also.

If you mean you want the start menu (not control panel) to look like the XP start menu, then you need Stardock's ObjectBar app for that. (Hippy's directions puts the Control Panel folder in the Start Menu, but doesn't change the Start Menu's appearance.) Basic Stardock apps to customize 98 (especially if you want to make it look similar to how XP appears when skinned: WindowBlinds, WebBlinds, Object Bar. I think you can also use Stardock's Icon program on 98 but I haven't tried it out

I don't believe you should be having those problems, at least certainly not to that extent. Not if you're a registered stardock app user and your WC account is synched with your stardock account.

Think of the logic, the servers are busy because there is so much traffic; what kind of moron sees that and yet still keeps trying and trying to get through, thus adding to the congestion and ensuring the server stays too busy for them to connect?

For myself, I mainly subscribed to support the WinCustomize site and was thinking of the benefits I derive from the site itself. (I've subscribed to other sites for the same reason and /or for access to premium content so it's a concept I'm comfortable with.) Skinbrowser does have its benefits, however. The message board and WC site are quicker to load and navigate with the skinbrowser. I haven't used the chat interface myself, so can't say how that is. Um, what else? Well, there's the premium

Well, start with documenting the error alerts, behavior, etc when you have problems. What other programs may be running, your hardware (videocard and drivers installed), etc. Now perhaps there's just something about your particular PC and hardware and software config that just will not like WB. (And it's not just a W98 thing, btw.) Sometimes software (any software, i mean)just won't run nicely on one machine and it will on another, even if the software and hardware between the two rigs

YMMV, but WindowBlinds and WebBlinds are running fine on my 4 yr old PII with 256 ram and win98. (I also run them at work on a Compaq PII with 96 mg ram and W98.) Some people may have problems depending upon their video cards and drivers. Also, since 98 and ME don't handle resources well, for good performance at any time one should minimize the apps running on startup and in the backgound. Too many apps set themselves to run on startup when it's totally unnecessary and it just drags do

Not all WB skins include the wallpaper in the download file. If it's supposed to be included, check your settings in WB and see if it's set to apply the windowblind that comes with the skin. If the wall isn't included with the skin you could check the wallpaper section of this site. Sometimes in the preview pic skin authors use walls unrelated to the skin and the walls are not on this site. In that case you could ask the author if it's available somewhere for download. When you get an email telling you to forward it to others or everyone you know, that's a clue that it's probably a hoax. If it's an email claiming there's a new virus on the loose that'll eat your hd, etc., check with a reputable antivirus site like symantec, for example, which keeps track of real viruses and hoaxes as well. In general, snopes.com is a good hoax debunking site (Sally provided a link to it above).
