Wyndstar, I have enjoyed your posts and have learned from you. I like the way you think. You noticed something that seemed contrary to the common thought, and you used it to your advantage. I don't know if I ever would have figured that one out, and I admire you for it. The only ones who can judge your conduct are God and yourself, and I'm pretty sure God's ok with it. Happy birthday

Thanks Mistralok for the links No problem. Glad to be of help. I can understand how a 'numbers' type of player could get frustrated at first. The formulas used in the game can be quite complex, with many different variables involved. My best advice to you, if you have a specific question, is to do a search on the forums. Just about anything you can think of has been addressed in here at some point. If you can't find by yourself what you are
Yeah, pretty huge files. The trailer, and the gameplay example videos are up on YouTube, much faster downloads, but lower resolution, of course.
Baqar79, have you heard of the 'Galactopedia'? It is a small utility program that allows you more info on anything in the tech tree. I have found it to be quite useful. You can find it here: WWW Link Also, the GalCiv Wiki is a great source of info for much of the math of the game; it is here: WWW Link Good gaming.
I am having trouble updating as well. I wasn't asked to update, but went ahead and tried a manual install. The heightmaps installed fine, but when trying to install the DA update, it downloaded, then 50% through the installation process, I got an error message that said "/English.str 0 l 0 Cannot create a file when that file already exists." Result: Installation failed (29) I closed out SDC, then tried to reboot, and my computer locked up in blackscreen. I did a hard boot, and I'm up and runnin
I'll be 46 in August. My first computer was a Kaypro II. It was basically an aluminum suitcase with a built-in 9" green phosphor screen. (A selling point, actually). It came bundled with a game called "Ladder", which was a Donkey Kong style game. This was before the days of 'computer graphics', so it was made up of the letters, etc from the keyboard. Very clever. An entire world made up of x's, 0's, and ampersands. I spent many hours cursing at that little screen, trying to master that game. Aft
if you play on higher levels the Ai will get the upper hand. Yes, at levels above 'tough' the AI gets certain bonuses. This is done in order to offset the human player's ability to react swiftly to situations. The AI tends to be more pragmatic.
Yes, the Romans learned that lesson the hard way. They would be pushed out of a village, they would reply in force, and that force would be cut down with screaming death. All these years later, it still amazes me that the people who brought indoor plumbing to the world couldn't learn a simple lesson- don't screw with the Deutsche folk.
The economy is your enemy in this game! Conversely, it can be your best friend. A robust economy can help to make up for deficiencies in your gameplay. In other words, sometimes you can buy your way out of trouble. For example: You have been busy building up your empire. Your economy is great, research is going fine, and you are building improvements like crazy. The galaxy is relatively peaceful, so no need to spend money on your military. Unfortunate
We'll miss you, Wyndstar. I'm looking forward to the AAR of your trial. Best wishes.
Gosh, Marcus, please don't feel that you have to apologize to me. The threads that you have started have generated more replies than I can ever recall from one poster in such a short length of time. If nothing else, you have proved that it is possible to have a civilized discussion about difficult issues.
Well done, gentlemen. Thank you all for the effort that you have put forth in support of the GalCiv community. I look forward to being an active participant in the AltMeta.

So in what way is the scoring not fair? In a way, the scoring is very fair. The rules are the same for everyone. If you can play on the largest map, and want to kill everything in sight, then sure, you can compete; otherwise, you are scr3wed. There is one way, and one way only to get a high point score, and that is most certainly not fair. I dare say that most of us don't have rigs that can support those numbers, and most of us play for fun, not scores
quote]playing on maps with more planets will allow you to reach higher levels in all of these areas.[/quote] This is the fatal flaw of the Metaverse. The scoring is skewed towards those who play gigantic/abundant maps. Only the higher end rigs can handle those settings now, so the overwhelming majority of players are shut out. There should be some way to level the playing field.
Just sitting there and building ships That's what they do. They start out with nothing, just their initial colony and 20 of them. Find them and squash them ASAP; they won't put up much of a fight, and you'll have yourself a nice pq planet as well. If you ignore them- well, you know what happens. I don't think it will help me save my bases. Starbase defenses are useless except early in the game. <div class="Art
Very nice. I have used this tactic myself, against the Korath. I'm a big fan of espionage; it's nice to know that others are finding interesting ways of utilizing it.
I would like to see a tab for my civ next to all the others in the foreign relations screen, so that I can easily compare my stats against all the others. I know that I can do this now, but changing between the screens is very clumsy and time-consuming; it would be so much easier to be able to go back and forth using the tabs in a single screen, the way I can do now with the other races. 'Soft' espionage. I agree with JW Swicord fully on this point. Perhaps you could allow a spy to b
I came across an interesting article today. WWW Link Is this guy for real, or is he full of hot air? Give it a read and let me know what you think.
You can check a civ's intelligence in the 'stats' tab in the foreign policy screen. Scroll down, it is at the bottom of the list, iirc. To check whether tech trading is on or off, simply try to initiate a trade, and you should know right away.
I did use Cntl-N to refresh my galaxy There have been a number of posts re your problem, and the consensus seems to be that, yes, this can sometimes reset. I don't have any personal experience with this, (choosing to play the map the game gives me), so I can't say how often this can happen, or if it is tied to a certain version. I'm sure someone else will come along and fill us both in. The only piece of advice I might give, is to make sure that you re
Two races and spore ships You are on the right track.
not sure what morale buildings before invasion would actually do? This makes a percentage of the population unhappy with their present situation. This can be a big boost to 'Information Warfare'. This tactic is a little pricey, but you can entice up to 40% of the planet's pop to come over to your side and fight with you. The biggest advantage to this strategy (other than the ready supply of soldiers) is the lack of damage to planetary improvements. Goo
Hello Livonya, I had never played a Metaverse game. I never liked the one-dimensionality of it; the 'you have to play this way, and this way only, if you want to post a respectable score' aspect of it. Still don't. But in the spirit of camaraderie, I bit the bullet and started my first meta game, and if I may say so, I played brilliantly. It was perhaps the most perfect game I have ever played, and quite surprising to me, as I was playing completely outside of my normal style. When the game was
Did you update in the middle of the game? That has caused problems from time to time.
