I used to be a huge fan of the Mechwarrior series, but alas, I've been spoiled utterly rotten by Steel Battalion: Line of Contact. I wish I could say I was excited about this news, but I'm sure it'll have that same watered-down "mass appeal" they tried to achieve with later entries in the series and Mechassault. Here's hoping for a full-blown sim, with the deepest customization options yet! /wishful thin

In my mind it should be option 1, but largely automated. I think that the problem is not between option 1 and 2, but we should have a fairly sophisticated system you can easily use. As a player I just want to say to the comp "I want sword +2 in the town of Blablabla", then it calculates all the things you need. And a caravan UI would let you tinker with what the comp porposed to you, in order to enhance the placement of the caravans. So, if I have ressources like horse

You should try th emultiplayer. The gameplay is just excellent, but you're right about the solo experience. But in multiplayer it's really different. Things like invisibility become more important than ever.

Fact is that TBS games are win-to-win. The more you win, the more chances you have to win. There's little things done to balance players that got a lightning start. In civ4, you often know in the first quarter of the game the two players that still compete for victory. Some ways to prevent this : - Events, like flood, volcano, disease. A bigger empire should have bigger chances to get "bad" events, or the bad events should hit them harder. - Upkeep. Bigger empire, bigg

Yep you can play TI with PBF (play by forum) but i've never done it and so can't really help you. A module for Vassal exists. Anyway Luckman when do you make your home move? I don't mean you're a turtle or something like that ... but lacking social entertainment in life is just .. so cruel ...

Just for my curiosity .. where did you stop your reading? Because I agree with you that the first part is more than annoying. But once the fellowship reaches the moria.. then it begins to show what this story will be about. I've a book (thick, with lots of little words and without pictures :-P) that explains what is the inspiration of Tolkien, what kind of symbol is the ring and what the story is about. This saga is really epix because it doesn't really tell about a good guy and a bad guy. It

While I couldn't care less for "lovely prose", I really don't know what you're getting at with "interesting characters" or "attempts at novel twists"; In both these departments, Eddings is god. At least compared to Tolkien; "This is Frodo. He's a hobbit. He's got a ring. And that guy over there, he's evil, and wants the ring." O_o. Did you read Lord of the rings or did you just saw the films?

And why not making retreat depend on the cavalry? They were mostly used to pursue thoses who retreated. Cavalry shouldn't be the "best" unit like it's often the case. Cavalary has some pros like being fast, being able to flank (and that's why we need flank/rear bonuses to attack and maluses to test of morale). If the enemy army retreat and you don't have any cavalry then they can retreat with only minor loses (like some units losing health. It should'nt be leave or die. Is a unit is f

I came with an idea : how about giving a "flag" to each research like "military, cultural, enhancement, etc.." Then when you do some actions in game you earn "military" or cultural" or "etc" points that would speed the research of the same flag. For instance : You're researching "bear cavalry" (;)) each time you win a battle you earn some insight to how handle them. Then you earn some bonus point sin bear cavalary researcdh beacaus eit has the flag "military" and a battle won
A player who wants to design a horse mounted knight will need to have researched animal husbandry which lets them train horses. They will need to have a city that has used one of its tiles to make use of a herd of wild horses on the map. They will need a mine on a metal deposit to create the armor. And once they have all those things, it'll be a matter of training and equipping the knight. [/qoute] Edit: I don't know why the first quote

Will there be a way to add content other than units? Why not adding some custom dungeons (with the ability to create the dungeon map, the creatures, place them, place traps, maybe even events like, for instance, push that lever to open thaht door, water level rises or you have 4 turns to reach the exit, etc... !!! )

What would be awesome would be the ability to create dungeons. You place some armies, some creatures you'ce created, some traps, maybe even some events ... Anyway, the "steal their tresaue" thing is already in ... you can already try to steal ennemy items. Just kill them ;) the devs talked about the streaming custom content in the game. It would be awesome to be able to add some things that enhance the gameplay (and not just new technologies)

I think it's not that important ... unless there's a story generator from the most important events in the game.

And why not a trait for units that allow them to double speed with a "retreat" option? Or allow them to move first, even if they are the attacker (or anything that let them attack then escape)

If a scrub grunt can never hit an elite soldier then that's no more a battle system but a "chess" one. If there's no chance then why fighting? An elite soldier should be overwhelmed by a lot of scubs grunt. But if a unit can never hit then it's all over. Your elite soldier is untouchable. There should always have some sort of "I can get killed" in every battle. Morevoer did you calculate the percentage to get a 15+ score with the open D10 (where 0 means 0)? Or a 30+ s

Armor should have at least the three stats : Encumbrance which would slow the user and raise fatigue when the unit does anything in battle. Evade that let's you escape hits Absorb that lessens damage done. Oh! And one thing about dice thrown : there should be an "no cap" throw. For instance you throw one D10. If you made 9 then you throw it again and add the new number. If you redo 9 then aga
Fuck, why is anyone still even arguing over the graphics? It's such a minor point, graphical quality is so unimportant in a game that's fun to play. If you think D3's gameplay is good, you shouldn't give a damn how it looks, let alone how other people think it looks, unless you're a shallow braindead graphics whore yourself (just one who happens to have a hard-on for SPRITES instead of LENS FLARE) I devoted 2 sentences to pointing out t
