I have been playing ToA, but began with the Dark Avatar campaign. I noticed that it is using the unique tech trees of ToA
That's strange because each version of the game has it's own separate directories for custom race configs and other game files. I actually have never played a campaign nor have I ever played ToA other than to test out that my installation of it works so I really can't answer your question but on the face of it I wouldn't think anything you've played

There are pros and cons of each method. I'd probably suggest you play Dread Lords first and then move on but it wouldn't be a big mistake just to jump in and start playing ToA. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is to start with Dark Avatar first but that's just my opinion because the nerfage of ship speed in that version of the game just makes it kind of annoying to play. With that said the version of the game that I'm currently playing is in fact Dark Avatar, so go figure.
I adjusted the zoom level actually higher and ships came back! I knew it was a dumb question!
No such thing as a dumb question. There are so many knobs and controls in this game it can be hard to even remember which ones do what sometimes, particularly when just starting out.

Here's how an invasion normally proceeds. I've never heard of an invasion "freezing" in the middle although I suppose it could happen. It may just be that you simply lost the battle. The first thing that happens in a invasion is the selection of tactics as shown in the following screenshot. The first thing to note are the attacking

I don't think you can tell from the debug.err but I suspect that you might have your zoom level set too low. You should be able to see this from the Prefs.ini file as well as view it in the game options menu. I's at work at the moment and so I don't have the game infront of me but you can basically define the zoom level at which you transition from viewing icons to viewing ships and planets in full graphics mode. If I recall correctly the smaller this number the further in you ha
I will have to check out the build "nothing" option next time I play.
I assume you mean build nothing in the spaceport queue. However the idea of building nothing also applies to early planet development. A lot of folks colonize their first few planets and immediately start plopping down a couple of factories and a research building or two. After all you do start with some extra cash and what else are you supposed to do to develop your new colonies? The answer is that m
Can someone point me to a thread or site where it will give you first-timer tricks? I assuem somewhere on these forums there are some...
I'm sure there are plently such threads however finding them is the problem. However one of the best sources of basic information is the GalCiv Wiki, https://www.galciv.wikia.com/wiki/Galactic_Civilizations_Wiki . If you forget the link just click on the "Databan

New core designs do in fact become available as you research the required techs but you have to research *all* techs required by the design before they are available. Don't forget you might need life support and miniaturization techs as well as the obvious weapons, defense, engine and hull techs. However in general the core ships suck and you really should just get into the habit of designing your own ships. They don't have to look pretty they just have to work and you're far better o
What am I doing off?
It sounds like you're playing at too high a difficulty level to start out with. Just lower the difficulty until you can more or less compete with the AI on a more equal footing. Once you can do that then it's time to increase the difficulty and learn how to do it all over again. The bottom line is that you will eventually get to the point where it's humanly impossible to compete on an even level with the AI however you do need to make su

Farms are indeed dangerous but they are essential for max income. Basically your income is proportional to the square root of your population. So the higher the population the higher your income although at a square root relationship you have to quadruple your population before you double your income. Your income is also directly proportional to your income. Double taxes and you double income. Population is also related to approval. The more people you have the less happy they
Does the speed of a trade vessel affect the trade route's worth ?
No. The speed of your frieghter only changes how quickly you can establish the trade route. Once established your frieghter is replaced by speed 1 trade vessel if I recall correctly. Your speed has nothing to do with the value of the route, the prime determinant of the value of the route is distance although I'm pretty sure that the population and/or income of the two terminal planets is involved as well.

Start out at a low difficulty and gradually increase it as you improve. Your goal is to out colonize, out research and out produce the AI's. If you do this then it's easy to conquer one AI and once you've conquered and absorbed one AI's planets then it's easy to finish off the rest as long as you can do it one at a time. Everything keys off the Colony Rush. If you have more planets and develop your planets faster than the AI's then you'll easily win and once it becomes easy to win the
No it's some kind of lag
Then it's most likely that this is specific to the Elemental site because I'm not seeing anything like it on GalCiv2 or Joe User for example. It's also possible that it could be an issue with your browser. Try refreshing the screen (F5) and if you can try another browser that would be helpful as well. Also mention which browser(s) you're using.

I've never seen that happen. You can actually move your threads if you have a blog setup but I see you don't so that can't be the case. It can take a bit for changes to appear but I've never seen anything take 10 minutes and even then I've never seen any kind of delay except if you post something on one of Startdocks sites and then you go to another to view it which I dobut is the case here. I mean strange things do occassionally happen but what you mention is nothing I've eve
wow thanks a lot for the detailed explanations, really appreciate it
Sure no problem. Actually the distinction between blog and forum functionality is something that comes up fairly often. The key thing to realize is that all of Stardocks sites share a common database even though many of the forums on each site are totally unique, and that writing an "article" on a blog is really no different from being the Original Poster of

There are some issue's having to do with startup given that you wrote the article prior to creating the blog. In the future now that you've created your blog first you shouldn't have any problem. You still should be able to do anything you want to do however this first time may be a bit difficult. So when you go to your
Does anyone know if you can play GalCiv on a LAN network - or - if this cannot be done - how can you play a co-op game with your friends in the metaverse??
As far as I know you can do neither of these things. You certainly can't play GalCiv2 on a network and you can't play a cooperative game with your friends in the metaverse. You used to be able to play a quasi hot seat multiplayer game by using cheat mode and this would automatically make the game metaverse illegal. Bu
Oh, and you can also extort it from the AI, but generally they won't give you much unless you're much more powerful (and of course, it hurts relations).
You can also get money from the AI by trading tech for cash and this can be a good source of income as well as benefiting relations. To get the best deals it is best if you have a diplomatic advantage over the AI but it's not absolutely required. However you do really want to make sure that if you sell one tech to one AI
i wanted to delete a post in an active thread actually, but thanks anyway
Well you can edit your replies and replace then with something to the effect of "comment deleted" however if people are interested they can always "View Edits" to see what you initially wrote. Generally the mods won't delete any reply unless it's really offensive and that's likely to get you banned. Even when they feel the need to lock a thread they don't delete the replies that caused it

7 Replies 49,265 Views

You can certainly ask but usually there's not much point since generally an unnecessary thread will soon just scroll off the recent posts list and be forgotten. There is a way to be able to delete and even do some level of moderation on your own posts but it's complicated and most folks don't want to bother with it. Basically it requires that you setup a blog on either one of Stardock's blog sites www.joeuser.com or <a href="http://www.impulsedriv
Also, many low-PQ planets can be terraformed into good ones if you research the techs, so you might want to think twice about destroying that colony.
Amen on that one. As far as I'm concerned there is no such thing as a crappy planet, There are planets that you don't have the colonization tech or the terraforming tech at the moment to make them worthwhile but if that's the case then it's easy enough to ignore them until you do get the colonization and terraforming techs to
