Sounds like an awful lot to balance in time for the release! Absolutely. In a way I'm glad this isn't a multiplayer game. Even balancing things like 3 or 4 different races is incredibly difficult. I'm not skeptical about quantum computers at all. It's not necessarily about the performance, it's about the power consumption and area usage. This could mean "flash" drives with more memory than today's hard drives, and mobile CPU's and video cards with 1/10th the battery drain. Wouldn't it be possible to store rarely used objects in some kind of database without direct memory mapping? That would have the same effect as a swapfile. Unless you can predict when you need some data and load it back before it's needed, you'll suffer from the low disk performance. Which also raises the question of the complexity of the predictor.

I don't think quantum computing will ever enter the realm of consumer products. And if so, then only in form of a co-processor or so. The algorithms are just too different, a quantum computer is unsuited for everyday tasks. Only a very narrow range of algorithms can work on quantum computers. And on top of that, it's not even certain yet that quantum computers are viable at all, there's still the possibility that a quantum computer won't have more power than a traditional computer.

nice analogies! the sad thing is, i'm a really smart guy. it's a real tough question. Regarding memory fragmentation - this is something we are aware of and will be attempting to address in 1.7. There are various things that can be done, such as allocating in bulk and using the Low Fragmentation Heap Sounds promising. though ultimately there is no permanent solution except for but some form of garbage collection. Any word on memory fragmentation? (Actually fragmentation of the logical address space assigned to the application) If plenty of space is still free, fragmentation won't (ever) be an issue. But if the memory limit gets reached, fragmentation can make things worse.

Btw the Orbital Teraforming tech is by far the best tech in the game . I always go for this tech right out of the gate or close to it .
