Yes, Impulse also downloads a lot faster. Still got a few problems, though: Some game updates aren't on impulse when they're out on SDC; Impulse doesn't use the user selected installation path...

So far I haven't read anything about the cost being subtracted from the final game. Yes, a crack will be out, but by buying the game and then downloading the crack, you do two things: - support EAs DRM scheme, since obviously people accept it. - support EAs policy for even more intrusive DRM, since obviously people crack it. So, no. I'm gone from boycotting EA (buying 2ksports alternatives, not buying Sims2 addons anymore) to actively discouraging friends from buyi

Phoenix M3 - are you referring to autodesigned ships? If so, the bug that the autodesigner somehow uses more space than really is available is known, I don't know if it's fixed in 1.92 though.
the silly idea that combat is taking place at distances several times longer than the length of our solar system is completely bogus.
Which NONE of us talked about. Our examples where distance earth - moon or less.
As for the magical faster than light weapons...
Which NONE of us mentioned. And perhaps you could stop calling every idea and argument that isn't yours 'dumb', stupid' and 'wtf' and bring some

:P Just to avoid any resentments, I have an X360 as well. Although I use it mainly for sports games, with a couple of action games mixed in (DMC4 was excellent, waiting for my imported Ninja Gaiden 2 to arrive - might have to make sure not to throw the controller too far, though. :D)

You are alone. I'm very glad that strategy gaming seems to remain the domain of PCs, just like simulations and in-depth RPGs.

After Action Report. Either a narrative based on a game you played, or a turn-by-turn analysis with a more technical / scientific approach.

What is exactly contrary to all weapon system developments in the past. Aerial combat: WW1 pilots shooting each other with flare guns (at the very start) WW2 first experimental R4M missile packs, to engage OUTSIDE of defender guns. Korea: Guided missiles and SAMs to engage targets OUTSIDE their weapon range. Present day: BVR missiles capable of engaging targets at 50+ miles. Naval combat: Galleys ramming each other or shooting with crude ballistae and catap

Hm. I would have thought the density setting would have more of an impact. To lure more players into the club, I split the score list between the classic 'tiny' approach and your new find of gigantic games. New player may find it easier to learn the tricks of ZYW on tiny maps.

Well, someone had to keep track of your scores. ;) However I fear that may have scared off any new players trying for the ZYW... Could you perhaps post your standard galaxy settings for those gigantic games? I'm familiar with tiny setups and toying with the idea of trying my hand at one of these 'advanced' ZYWs.

covert: I think I pretty much covered the 'lightsecond range' in the moon example. And as was just said, even far less distance produces enough of an error margin that lasers are NOT foolproof. If anything, I'd even say that missiles are far more accurate at these distances, as they can correct their flightpath after launch. On canon: Where does it say that combat takes place at (based on the view) less than a kilometre? The movement of the ships aren't even anything resembling

Which only shows two things: 1) TV series aren't about realism. Admittedly, neither is PC gaming. 2) The fights aren't using Newtonian physics and are at extremely close ranges. For 1) I can say that at least Firefly was refreshing in that it adhered to 'there is no sound in space'. Technically, your blasters aren't lasers at all. They are superheated plasma bolts propelled at sub-FTL speeds, in most handheld weapons apparently even sub-sonic. And yes, even la

Just an exercise to elaborate: Let's say a grid cell in GC2 is even far less than an AU. Let's take the distance between the sun and Mercury as an example. Given the vastness of space, that distance can be called 'meelee' range. Mercury is (at perihelion) approximately 45 000 000 km away from the sun. Light travels at approximately 300 000 000 m per second. If you are in a ship and rely on targeting information acquired through any non-FTL technology, your inf

Heh. I can guarantee you that with relativistic speeds OR enough separation, you miss with a laser if you just point it straight at the target. Or where you perceive the target is at the time you point the weapon. (Assuming the targeting system itself is also limited by speed of light.) GC2 doesn't give any scale at all when it comes to combat. The ships are merely within the same grid. Even if we don't use parsecs as equivalent and use AU instead (which is almost touching dist

No, you're right. Anything resembling such a jump drive simply can't be modded. An additional weapon tech-branch for fighter could be possible, but they would still have to be treated like one of the three existing weapon classes.

Also, while colonising, you may want to NOT build anything on the new planets for a while. New colonies cost enough without the added costs for production and maintenance.

Or at least a feature in the editors - maybe a 'Race Editor', where outside of the game, we could define looks, styles, abilities and also edit the descriptions (possibly the dialogue as well) of a race. Generally though, the process remains the same with TA?
