The best idea, is a SMAC/Civ4 like government system
Totally agree. That's by far the best government system I've seen and balancing the bonuses and penalties of the different areas of civics adds a lot of depth. I wouldn't mind seeing something like Civ4's vassal states either. Slave races, perhaps? It would be a viable alternative to surrendering, which results in total destruction whether they surrender to the enemy or a third party.

I'd love to get bonuses on those planets that start out at Class 4 and end up being Class 18 when fully terraformed. @Mumblefratz: I wore out my Civ2 tech tree poster looking up all the different irrigation/engineering effects on the special resources :D

I think it would be nice to have a small chance of getting a bonus tile when terraforming. I remember how cool it was in Civ to complete a mine and find a new iron or gold resource. It's good old intermittent reinforcement, great for making things more interesting.

That was quite a while ago so I can't remember exactly, but there would have been very few habitable worlds left that didn't require the extreme techs, and none within several sectors of the Korath borders. They did eventually start producing warships, and decent ones at that, but far too little/too late. Had each of the colonizers produced after the war started been even a mediocre defender, they would probably have slowed my advance enough to make me reconsider.

Since I like to play with tech trading off, I'll have to pick my early victims according to their farming technology :) My favourite part of TA is stealing other race's unique techs in order to enhance my strength or eliminate weaknesses. There are some deadly combinations to be had, like playing the Terrans and combining their warp bubbles, the Impulse, Warp and Hyperwarp speed bonuses and the Arcaeans' navigation techs. You end up having decently fast ships with no engines with al
Upgrading is cheaper than buying outright, and gets done faster than building new ships.
If I have a crappy little planet with a good starship bonus I'll build cheap empty hulls there and then upgrade if I need good ships in a hurry.

10 Replies 4,394 Views

Having a hull in orbit to stop lone transports or spore ships is okay . . . but putting armor on a weaponless defender (happening in my current game) doesn't make much sense. Unless the AI is perhaps trying to build a standard design and doesn't have the weapons tech yet.

10 Replies 4,394 Views

I always arm my survey ships. Just one or two points of weaponry, the survey module and lots of engine and life support. If hostilities break out even a cargo hull surveyor with one hp can take out a ton of unescorted transports, unarmed starbases and of course the enemy's flagship. Also, if the surveyor hits a starship graveyard to get some extra hp (or you have a tech to add hp modules), an armed cargo based survey ship can be upgraded to a serious warship with tons more space than

Excerpt from The Space Miner of Caerbannog -------------------------------------- There's their fleet! Where, behind the space miner? It is the space miner! You silly sod, you got us all worked up! Well, that's no ordinary space miner. Oh? That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered space miner you ever set eyes on! You tit! I soiled my armour I was so scared! Look, that space miner's got

If you looked around the forum a bit you'd see a post by one of the devs made within the last few days, to the effect that bootcamp is absolutely not supported. It doesn't matter that the new Macs have Intel processors, they're still not running a native pc bios and pc software is by no means guaranteed to work.

That Enermax fan sounds interesting. Until now Noctua has been the last word in quiet fans. The Enermax is 17db at low speed and 34 on high; the Noctua 120mm is 17db on high and 6db on low. However one test showed the Enermax to have lower friction and lower power consumption than any other fan, and perform very well when undervolted. I think your $7 would be well spent :) Noctuas are not cheap.

I find it kind of ironic that just as we're getting the new Dark Energy related game content, scientists are [link="http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2007/12/21/2124258.htm?site=science&topic=latest"]saying oops, dark energy doesn't exist.[/link] :)

The Enzo is a very good cooler, the only drawback I see is that it's pretty loud when the fan's cranked up enough to match Ultra 120 Extreme performance. You're into audio so that might be an issue for you. OTOH, Newegg has the Tuniq currently on sale for $45. They way I look at it even an expensive heatsink is a very small expenditure compared to the rest of a new system, so it doesn't make sense to me to spend $35 or $40 on crap when you can spend only a little more and get one of t
do you think that looks like a poor heatsink?
Yes. It's not dramatically better than the stock cooler, maybe in the same league as the Arctic Freezer 7. The one coherent review I could find gave it a 68% score. And at $40 it's not that cheap, you could get a Thermalright Ultra 90 (with a fan), a Tuniq Tower or a Scythe Ninja for about that price.
notwithstanding those facts, i think next month i'm going to buy this Rosewill RCX-Z4 . i'm attracted to it because the fin array is offset to be lower than the center of the CPU socket; i'm hoping it'll line up fairly well with my rear exhaust fan, creating positive and negative pressure over the heatsink component.
A poor heatsink that lines up with an exhaust fan is still going to give poor cooling
It sure would be nice to use a good CPU HSF instead of that hot noisy card mounted thing.
[link="http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/vga/hr03gt/product_vga_cooler_hr03gt.htm?art=MTQyMywxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA=="]Thermalright to the rescue again.[/link] The HR-03 just won HardOCP's video card heatsink roundup. It was effectively silent with a big lowspeed fan and even managed to cool a stock clocked 8800GT passively (although just barely).

I see what you mean about the ships being useless later in the game. A single medium hull with Kanvium and Positronic Torps just took out 150 Super Dominators in a single turn, losing 5 hp in return. ;p

Just a heads up: ram prices are going to increase dramatically in the near future as manufacturers cut production to bring the price up. I've seen $75/gb forecast for 2008, so upgrade now if you can because ram is as cheap as it's going to get. I just picked up 2gb of OCZ Platinum DDR2-800 for $17 after rebate :D Check out a boxing day sale near you.

Trouble is, this is early in the game when the corvettes are actually not that weak individually. My best fleet can withstand 2 or 3 fleet attacks but not 20 in one turn. What I did was build some fast, long range troop transports and lure them away while the pitiful remnants of my home fleet go for the Drengins' lightly defended planets. Thank goodness they don't get free troops with their super ability -- right now they're spread way too thin to be much of an invasion threat. <b
