If you make antimatter a prerequisit to jump, you kill the game. How will you ever use auto-cast in a fight when you're auto-killed by running out of antimatter? Yes, the pji sucks, (although when it comes to using that ion cannon, or the ultimate phase jump stopper, the gravity warhead, they are a bloody godsend with that increased time frame), but if you want to fix the pji, fix the pji. Fixing the pji by screwing antimatter use and making it take ages to do multiple jump travel is

Some problems with this thread. First, super weapon criticisms. The TEC weapon is the best, yet does something almost entirely pointless? Blowing a capital up is nice, but blowing up 2 credits income isn't real great. If the place is already maxed out and you aren't killing it, you're basically just making them upgrade eventually. The Vasari and Advent weapons are more strategic in use, you can duplicate the TEC weapon by sending 30 siege frigates into a system just fine. T

Yes and no, attrition isn't their strong point for sure, but they don't run from just anything. When you're jumping into a fully upgraded planet with a similar size fleet, they are intelligent to leave. Even a somewhat smaller fleet would be more than enough to make it a one sided fight. You just don't need that much of an advantage to turn the ai into hamburger with the fleets it builds. If the ai were building more durable fleets, I'd say they need to tough it out more ofte

I'd call it both. 4x combat tends to be rather blah. You have master of orion with the stack based tactical combat, master of magic with the real tactical combat, all the civ and civ clones(generously this would include games like galciv2 with the fleet system) with stack based combat that is utterly blah, and games that are off the 4x reservation themselves, like homm with the in depth, but still vastly limited combat. The best of the 4x games has boring combat compared to the worst of the t

First, fleet view. I create a fleet, hotkey the leader for easy access, and the bloody empire tree switches to the planet they're in, which is generally cluttered, and may not even show what I'm after if the fleet is in transit and separated. It's definitely not what I was planning to be looking at. The selection based tree is nice, but fleets should most definitely have priority in what it looks at, having to collapse every planet to keep it stable defeats the purpose of havi

Jump inhibitors wont help with your star issue. :) Have you tried large numbers of carriers? A wall of frigates probably wont do jack diddly, but strike craft can generally intercept stuff booking it through a well. I had a fleet sitting in the enemy solar systems star well, the 30 advent carriers and support took quite the nice chunk out of the ai fleets as they ran through to hit my other systems. Not having defense on your planets just isn't an option, and not having a fleet somew

It's all scale. If you're ending the game with a dozen ships, the upgrades are pretty worthless. If you have 2k fleet points, odds are it was worth it to upgrade the entire tech tree by then. As far as tactics go, dps is nice, but shield mitigation means more dps isn't that much use. There are rps elements of a sort, there are I think five different armor classes, and the various damage types have modifiers against them. You'd have to look up the stuff to see what damage types are b

Wow, a lot of pissing and moaning over what's probably a really minor change... At twice or thrice the fleet points for comparable durability to a light frigate, with priority targetting by anything and everything, if you're losing your planets to siege frigate spamming, you deserve to. On the reverse, a slight survivability nerf wont change that. Hell, knocking them down to 1 hp and 1 shields probably wouldn't change it much either. Who sends them into a firefight? I know y

Where be that wonderful set of options? Flagship on/off and pirates on/off would make a whole lot of people happy. Then there's the random map generator, what happened to our #stars and planets gig? The small, medium and large type thing is rather limited by comparison. I haven't played with creating custom ones with the map designer yet, which looks wonderful, but for just popping out a random map, the setup is severely inferior to the beta2 version.

They had three levels of security actually. The basic was fairly harmless, no worse than safedisk, but the enterprise level protection that shit for brains ubisoft was putting into their titles was a serious threat. It hijacked your entire system and disabled functionality to prevent you from doing various things that could be used to reverse engineer or copy it. If you've ever had a hardware conflict fry your entire system, you know how dangerous having some putz company mess with the zero l

Ok whatever your name is. You start with three asteroids, two more isn't a long ways off. It takes you less than 25 minutes to make up the cost by the previous example, and if you haven't gotten those five mines inside five minutes, you bite the big one. Whether or not it's more useful to have the resources or the tech early on is game dependant. You're not magically ending up at the same level of resource gain even though you researched it earlier, this is the point you fail to grasp. It i

I logged in just to share my amusement with you guys. The two of you are some sort of super tool, like a power tool, a swiss army knife and heavy machinery all rolled into one. These two threads are great. First, Schod.("Schod-the-rod" eh? Pot, meet Kettle) Look at your graph, a quick glance should suffice. Does that even remotely resemble the 30% increase you're supposedly showing? I get your point, you're even right. You're still a fucking dumbass though, get a grip on

You don't need atmosphere to launch shrapnel anymore than you need atmosphere to use a missile. There are plenty of current solutions for explosives in a vacuum, all the good stuff is self contained.

No, the very concept of a permanent capital just doesn't make sense for a skirmish in one small area of space. They're still in the galaxy, but the sides aren't focused around their base of power, they are focused around wherever they're fighting. It just doesn't fit the description when the actual home world isn't on the map. You're making a permanent command center when no one makes permanent command centers for a remote theater even now. They aren't functional. If this were a mor

While hilarious, making fun of someone with mental defects just isn't nice. So, schod, read up on dementia, it's just too painful to watch you get lost reading single sentences and forget your previous posts. On second thought, someone else read up on dementia for him, if he does have it, he wont remember that either. Tge, the survey isn't a survey, it's data mining of the IRS records to track income. They do one every nine years. You're referencing it like I didn't link the

While it sounds wonderful for a campaign or perhaps a massive sandbox setup, not so much for a "skirmish" map. Assuming we were in there, earth wouldn't be in every game because earth is one planet in a single solar system that really exists, not a randomly generated scenario, or a battle somewhere else. It's rather odd to find an immobile home planet that isn't supposed to be your actual home world in a 4x. Great idea for a boosted planet on a set map with sol in it, or a set map of whatever

Still skimming I see. The cross section is of filing tax payers in both 1996 and 2005 between the ages of 25-64 in the span. College students huh? There are multiple stats given, absolute and relative quintile jumps, percentage changes in income, median, means, and the incomes themselves. Jumping into the next quintile is a substantial increase in income even if they were at the very edge of it in 1996. The range itself has vast improvement in the incomes of the people still in it,

Even after I define it you don't recognize your own argument. What did you do, flunk debate class and form an inferiority complex? You're referencing the downtrodden as a result of peer pressure, TGE as a result of mass media. To the very last posts in the thread. Being in the same income bracket doesn't mean horseshit either. Read the whole thing, those are even inflation adjusted. Yes, over half of them are still in the same income bracket(55%, not 45%, you didn't read far enough

Sorry Schod, you lose that bet. You'd be a bit better at this if you read more than summaries, although the summary itself refutes you as well. The summary: [QUOTE]• There was considerable income mobility of individuals in the U.S. economy during the 1996 through 2005 period with roughly half of taxpayers who began in the bottom quintile moving up to a higher income group within 10 years. • About 55 percent of taxpayers moved to a different income quintile within 1

A fleet of 30 frigates is attacked from the rear by 5 frigates. The fleet then turns, giving the five frigates a few free shots, who move through the enemy as they turn, forcing them to turn again. You have a wonderful opportunity to hit them as they are turning from the other direction, and another opportunity to hit them from that opposing direction once they turn back. Three sets of five frigates would do substantial damage in such an instance, An equal force sent in such a manner would de
