Well I was more referring to would your program actually benefit from a 64 bit architecture that warrants leaving out the 32bit crowd? Is it using gobs of memory because it has to, or because you expect your audience to use mods that would stretch the limit of the game? Or is it doing it because you didn't really optimize the program well. If it's the former, awesome go for it. If ti's the latter... well maybe not so much [e digicons]>_>[/e] B
Quoting Alstein, reply 90Where did that $20mil estimate come from? That sounds like (my guess on) the budget for GalCiv III (At least the base game) in its entirety. Am I about to get a lecture from Stanley Whitefin, the Science Shark? People brought up Star Citizen earlier, which was a complete run-away success for crowdfunding and has raised over $20M and counting. Brad was tongue-in-cheek
What browser are you running?
Yeah that sounds like malware.... There's nothing on the site that would even begin to pop anything like that. You might want to nuke your computer from orbit.
Stardock could develop their own achievements system engine and reuse it improve it as time goes by. Creating new engine for creating a new game? Ok. Creating an achievement system? Nope, that costs money and that you could reuse it is moot. I don't blame them (developers) for trying to maximize benefits. I don't blame them for adding silly achievements (altough I understand that some are gameplay control points) that h
haha you guys are making me more confident about my own 64bits/Dx10 only requirement for my game
http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey About 70% of Steam users have a 64 bit OS (Vista 4.47% /Win7 51.41% /Win8 15%) Stats from Steam definitely indicate that going 64 bit is the way to go, if you have a good technical reason for it.
I just bought Legendary Heroes ($10...too cheap to pass up) and tested it too. Yep...the LH executable will instantly call steam.exe (unlike my copy of FTL, which does not). Personally I don't care. On the surface I disagree with it, but I've been a Steam user since day 1 so I'm used to having a single place to install, patch, and launch my games. Yeah, convenience has corrupted me! -HM

You "only" need to pay for an achievements system that doesn't need Steamworks because apparently achievements are cool (in addition to some control/check features), multiplayer that doesn't use Steamworks and... what else? All the social mumbo jumbo? Altough you could require the player to have a Steam account (and the service) to use those features, you would still need to prepare the game to play without them. I'd be happy
I know, I got the GOG-version.
I suppose the only stickler is that if you're big on mods, its likely that most modders are going to stick with the Workshop rather than bother distributing to multiple places (and can you really blame em?). So you might be 'forced' to use Steam regardless.
Quoting Ashbery76, reply 27 A trailer and not much else is not enough to part with my money, yet. There's a trailer? Wow, gotta go see that one. Edit: and a nice trailer it was too.
Wait did you become a founder without even watching the trailer? :)
Well, they want to use the Steam Workshop, which requires Steamworks, if I'm not mistaken. Probably the same with multiplayer too.
Note that Dragon Commander shows that you can have your cake (Steamworks) and eat it too (DRM free)
There will be some later announcements regarding this.
Great, just as long as it's 'on the radar' in some way.
@Major, the CPU looks ok, though the HD3000 will limit you graphically. How much really depends. You'll also be sacrificing video memory for onboad memory so that's another give/take thing.
I'm not sure how far we can really 'crowdsource' AI behavior but here's an interesting thought The Forza team for the Xbox One is testing their new game. Currently when you play, your play data is sent to Forza for analysis. From which tehy are crowdsourcing AI parameters for how other drivers should behave. If we assume GalCiv3 is doing soemthing similar, how much data would you be willing to part with? Being online? Uploads of your game e
Regarding your second point, everything I've read suggests that supporting multiple platforms adds very little time to development provided the software is designed from the ground up for cross-platform support. Basically, stay away from proprietary middleware like DirectX, and you're golden. Again, indie developers with tiny budgets are able to release Windows, Mac, and Linux versions without breaking the bank, so it does
No competitors...Beamdog, GOG, Origin, Gamestop (Impulse), and UPlay. Unless you meant quality competitors then I see your point. (Ok I like GOG)
That's only if you're looking at the store. And the reality is that the 'gateway drug' is Steamworks. Steamworks gets games on to Steam. Users want games. Users install steam. Users buy games on Steam. Anyone can make a store. But you ahve to convicne people
. Somewhere in there they also sold Impulse off, and embraced Steam, which was just peculiar, although I suspect the simple reason it was done was because Impulse just wasn't making them any money.
The irony was that they sold off Impulse because ti was making too much money and thus diverting resources away from the game development wing. Which was part of why Elemental was pretty bad. Ironically if he had kept Impuls
Stardock have been one of the few to try to use tech to all its capacity in previous games so I'm really excited to see what kid of deviousness and epicness they come up with for GC3 with it being 64 bit and Dx10+. I'd also say it's about time that SOMEONE started doing 64bit only.
Peculiarly though the recent BF4 beta was 64-bit only. Even though the retail release will have both 32

I'd ay that the game is going to be very memory and CPU intensive If you're expecting this to work on a netbook then i'd say no
Ultimately its up to each dev to decide whether the investment into OpenGL is worth it. How much does it cost to re-tool everything to OpenGL vs the increased revenue. Most data up until this point have been from small devs that paid fairly little money to do the retool which meant that there was veyr little risk involved in 'trying' it. Then there's lost opportunity cost of doing the OpenGL implementation instead of other things that actually have to get done. Going purel
Have you guys considered any BPM or touch friendly UIs like in Civ5? Also what about ultra-widescreen configs? 2 -3 monitors setups
The pricing issue of Civ5 BNW during the sale has nothing to do with "dependency on Steam". it was a pricing error. As for compensation they gave everyone a cpy of Civ5
Bother. I'd really hoped this would be available through GameStop. While it's less reliable than it was while it was Impulse, at least it's not Steam. The frigging Steam client slows down my computer so much that games I've purchased through it are basically unplayable, to the point that I've gone and found physical copies and paid twice. (Yes, the physical versions run about two to three t
Steam IS DRM. Some may not find it obtrusive, but it is a system designed to limit the use of the content on it to those who have signed up for the Steam service. Previously, Stardock games could be played by simply installing the game from the cd/dvd and no other action had to be taken. If a user wanted, they COULD install Impulse (another form of DRM) and get patches for their game, but they didn't have to. St
