The icon doesn't work that way. I used settings->add->shortcut->music player shortcut to create the icon so there's no target path. It simply lists mp3 as the target file type to launch when you click the icon. There's no place to set the target and anyway, why did it change? As you can see, the shortcut shows the correct WMP icon but somehow still

Starting today, when I click on the Media Player icon in my dock it launches VLC Media Player rather than Windows Media Player. I checked and the default player for mp3 files is WMP, not VLC and yet it keeps launching VLC. I even set WMP under Default Programs to be the default player for all media it supports but still no change. If I double-click an mp3 it launches WMP. How do I change the doc icon (which simply says mp3) to launch WMP again?
By what measure is an interface that hides numerous common functions found readily in Windows 7, a better interface? Adding Metro didn't force MS to make the standard desktop less functional and intuitive. They purposely chose to make it that way for whatever reason. You start Windows Explorer and want to return to the program launcher? Clicking X doesn't do it. Nope, you have to move your mouse to an invisble point and wait for something to pop up that y
@Savug, I did not mean the interface only works with touch screens but it is obviously designed for them first and foremost. Forcing a mouse user to do endless horizontal scrolling was a bad choice.
I understand a clean install is preferable but I don't have a week to reinstall all my apps. It's absurd that MS still treats its users as if they're buying their first OS. There's zero reason why they can't do the equivalent of a clean install of the OS while porting the apps. Laplink can do it, why can't MS?
So no direct upgrades from Vista? For the Vista to 7 upgrade, MS was a little loose in the use of the word "upgrade". Yes, you could upgrade from Vista Ultimate to 7 Premium, meaning you paid the upgrade price, but it was a clean install, not an upgrade installation. That meant every app had to be reinstalled. That's the main reason I didn't upgrade from Vista to 7. With 2 Ultimate PCs, the upgrades would have cost $438, unless I was willing to reinstall
quoting: "sooooo use the dev preview instead of the consumer preview a lot to 'prove' your point do you" I have neither as I currently don't have a PC to spare a test run, I grabbed a screenshot from the web. Many reviewers have commented on the garish colors. I simply attached a description to that, calling it the Fisher Price interface. I used to call XP the Crayola interface because of its use of primary colors but it was

LOL, the blog says, " It’s beautiful ". Yeah right, it looks like the boxes Fisher Price toys come in.
Ok, now the configuration program crashes when previewing mpeg dreams. [e digicons]X([/e]
Problem is solved! Thank you. I uninstalled all my old codecs and installed a new comprehensive code pack. I guess I was running a no-mpeg dream at the time I installed codecs recently and didn't realize it had been broken,
Hmmm, I did install some codec packs a while back when WMP didn't play some downloaded videos. Maybe it's the mpeg encoded dreams that are pausing. Is there a way to uninstall the codecs? I'll look for new ones and post the results. Good find! It does seem to be the mpeg encoded dreams.
More info: the dreams also pause in the configuration program, not just when they're applied to the desktop. Also, the time it takes to pause varies. Seems it plays the animation one time but refuses to loop.
Regardless of which animated wallpaper I load, it runs for about 5 seconds and stops. If I right-click the desktop, select pause and then resume, it starts again but pauses after the same 5 seconds. Here';s the dump from the configuration program. Nothing has changed on my system in the last couple of days since this began happening. Your computer has a Windows Experience Index base score of 5.7 Your Windows Graphics Experience score is 5.9</p
I stopped using gadgets in favor of Rainmeter after one of the skinners added every function I needed, but under Vista Ultimate 64 bit I never had problems with the sidebar and Deskscapes. I used to keep the gadgets floating off the sidebar with the sidebar actually closed. Not sure if that's the difference since Win 7 doesn't use sidebar anyway.
You get that message when you run ObjectDock or when you install it?
Thanks Skarny. I didn't realize it was normal to lose the paths when you change to a new theme and then go back to the the prior one. Is the theme.ini created when you invoke the DX from some internal data? I mean, it always reverts back to the same paths, for example on Jim's PC, so where is that stored if not in a text file?
Jim, my last question referred to how things operate. If I routinely change DX themes (which I have not), do I have to reset the paths every time I start a DX I've already used? What I do is keep running one until an alternative I like comes out.
I don't have Windows 7 (Vista Ultimate 64 bit) but all those sub-folders named "Application Data" doesn't sound right.
I like the new download site (although I never hated Impulse). My only question is, how do I know if there's an update I don't already have? Impulse was slow at startup but it did let me know when I an update was available.
@Jim, I had found that ini file and searched for either my paths or yours (the default) without success. I see them now, wonder how I missed it. [e digicons]:|[/e] Ok, stupid question: If the paths are saved in the CurrenTheme folder and I change to another theme, do they have to be redefined when I go back the original DX?
@Skarny, that may be ok, it just means the utility needs to run when the DX is not loaded. Where can I find this ini file?
I'm trying to create a front-end for RND's DX creations, and perhaps others, that will let you set all the shortcut paths in one doalog instead of right-clicking and browsing one at a time. Trouble is, I can't find where the gadgets store the paths. If possible, I'd also like to optionally change the name of the target description ("games, security, etc.). If any of this ends up in the DX itself I'm probably out of luck. But if external text files,
@Rosco, I do incremental backups weekly with full image backups about every 3 months.
Download and run CCleaner. It does a good job of removing program traces of uninstalled programs.
