Yeah, I didn't have any problems initially, it was just after installing a bunch of stuff, nothing unusual, it started acting really odd, here's a list of what I installed and the ease of installation: Photoshop 6.01 (No problems) Alias Wavefront Maya 4 (No problems) Gamespy Arcade (Have to disable DirectSound in options, or crashes on game launch) Max Payne (No problems after severe tweaking and rebooting a few times) Counter Strike (No problems after severe tweaking an

Takrus: www.discreet.com and www.nvidia.com in particular just froze the browser. PJPowell: It is 3DS Max R4, the problem isn't in the software itself, but it uses the C-Dilla licensing system from macrovision, which is not compatible with XP, so the software refuses to acknowledge that it's licensed. I know XP is still just a Release Candidate (which is very different from a beta, in beta they're still expecting bugs, in an RC they're actually proposing sending that version of

Never let it be said that I'm not a fair man. Never let it be said that I didn't give WinXP a chance, 2 in fact, but I just don't like it. After endless tweaking to get everything working with XP, the one thing that I can't get working is 3DS Max. So, after my original rant, I installed XP RC2, and I stand by my opinion that XP doesn't offer me anything that 2k doesn't already offer with more stability. It's the little things, like certain websites crashing IE, the endless hours of tweaking

Here's a shortlist of the ones I like: irc.powersurfr.com irc.emory.edu irc.mindspring.com irc.prison.net irc.lightning.net irc.east.gblx.net irc.west.gblx.net irc.ins.net.uk irc.homelin.no irc.core.com irc.solidstreaming.net irc.du.se At least one of those should work for you. I know efnet servers can be a bit of a bugger to find/get on.

it's a lot more complex than WA2 skinning, but the power and flexibility it offers over its predecessor is huge. Take a quick look at this http://bluemars.planet-d.net/wa3skintutorial/chap1.html to see what I mean.

Actually the way things are going so far with the whole DMCA/DeCSS issue, it looks like MS could lock you up and throw away the key if you do the simple regedit and couple of "regsvr32 -u"s that are required to remove the WPA from XP. That's assuming they don't toughen it up for the release version. I once saw this movie about people who did these cracks, and they said that there's always a back door, and the password is usually "love", "god", or "sex", then there's the old favourites such as "t

Personally I like Lunix, but at the end of the day, the software support still isn't there. Sure, you can get email apps, web browsers, drawing packages etc that run under Gnome, and support in games is rapidly increasing, but there are a few key apps (Homesite, Photoshop, Flash etc) that you just can't get on Linux, and I need them to do my job, so that rules it out as a full time OS for me. As for this myth of great uptime, I have yet to see any evidence that this is true in Lunix (not so in U

I've noticed that the site slashdot.org has become something of a meeting place for people using *nix operating systems who want to engage in a bit of windows bashing. I also love the way that when a security hole is found in IE, they act like it's the first time anyone has found a security hole in any OS, and instantly forget about the 50 security patches per week added to the Redhat errata collection. What I was thinking is that people who use Windows, and want a forum to bash *nix us

There are a few skins for older versions of WA3 over at deviant. I say only a few, because of the 15 or so that there are, most of them are winamp2 skins. "skinmaker" = "bad skins".

I don't see why it wouldn't. If you're using a dual head VGA, then the OS just treats your resolution as twice as wide, and DX has worked on every resolution I've used. If you're using 2 VGAs though, I don't know, windows treats them as separate monitors rather than just a very wide single monitor as with the dual heads.

On a "serious" note. I have ambitions of making a complete skinset for convergence. I have some ideas, but as I mentioned, find it very difficult to turn a comp into a skin. Is there anyone that would turn my artwork into WB/DX/OB/WinAmp/ICQ skins? This is quite a big job, and not only am I very busy with work at the moment, I am also unbelievably lazy, so it might take a while for me to get around to it, but when/if the time comes would anyone like to help?

Hoverboy spake thusly: The big thing that XP has over Win2k is app compatability. I'm a big gamer and I've yet to find a game that I can't run. -and- Oh yeah, as for the Product Activation hype that I see people ranting about: I've swapped out/upgraded everything on my machine except my motherboard and my NIC and have never been prompted to "call Microsoft" to re-install XP to verify anything. Uncle AJ Replies: I never had any trouble getting anything running on 2k (exce

I was with you when I wrote my little rant on XP the other day, and I'm with you now I'm running XP. There's no new features of any note that I wasn't already getting with 3rd party products on 2k, and there's a few little niggles that WORK ME INTO A RAGE - PREPARE TO MEET MY FISTS OF FURY WINXP...WHAAAAAAAA.

Also, if you download it as a zip, check to see what's in it, if it's a .wmz file, unzip it, if it's the actually skin bitmaps, scripts etc, then rename it to a .wmz.

Just copy them into the skins directory where WMP is installed, when you're in "full mode", there should be a button on the left for "skin chooser". AJ
