I have been trying various endings to the same game. FINALLY got through the Military Victory last night. The win was a forgone conclusion, but it took for bloody ever. Anyway, right at the end one turn before the finish the Chigs' last planet defected. It (1.03) still classified it as a Military Victory. I guess if you're technically at war when the end comes it's a conquest, even though the mechanism was a culture flip. BTW, the Metaverse points only advanced from 650 (

The PPro is the best chip Intel ever did! I keep trying to retire this box, but I use it every day and except for games it has more than enough HP. I'll have to move GC over to the dual 850. And if that doesn't do it, I have some big machines in the basement. :HOT: ~SDC~

I wondered why I couldn't find message I knew I replied to last night, and noticed an apparent SDC bug. As of right now, there are no posts visible between 6:32 and 31:15 hours old. The posts are there (re www.galciv.com/forum.asp) they just don't show up in SDC. ??? ~SDC~

Hmmm. Brad, I'm running on a dual PPro 200/512 (512MB). Loading a Gigantic galaxy is excruciatingly slow. (Five minutes?) I can't play with music (it jumps) and explosions are painful to watch so I turn them off. Background loading doesn't seem to improve things much. W2k 2nd proc performance graph shows pretty low usage (maybe 30% peak) at Normal. Turn waits aren't too bad, given that movement is no faster than 3 grids in 2 seconds. I hear you insisted that you be able to play

One thing that isn't obvious - the attacker in a battle has the advantage. I'll bet those Frigates are faster and more numerous than your BBs, allowing the AI to attack you more often than you're able to attack it. For that reason I use Corvettes quite late in the game - they have a decent punch, but they're faster than anything else. I always use mixed fleets, with the Corvettes locating the enemy and setting up his important ships to be clobbered by my heavies, drawing slower heavies out of

Markissimo41, very interesting. Thanks. How reliant on Trade Goods leverage is that strategy? From what I'm reading over on the GC forum they may severely restrict the appeal of TGs the the AIs in an upcoming version. ~SDC~

20% tax rate sacrifices some revenue for a rapid increase in population. If you're spending 50% and running a deficit, decrease spending . How easy is that? As for these 60% tax rates, they are self-crippling past the very early stages of the game (and some people go the opposite way and run very low tax rates early, where they may be population-constrained). ~SDC~

First off, I'm surprised that people are still surprised that increasing taxes (past a certain point) actually *reduces* revenue! This may be a bit counter-intuitive, but it's the way the real world works, as has been demonstrated more than a few times in the past half century. There is a famous graph called the 'Laffer Curve'. It charts revenue against tax rates in a free economy. Revenue ramps up nicely to a peak at about 40%, then drops off as the rates get higher. <
A bit more information on default settings within the game, e.g. how many people/troops are loaded if the player doesn't adjust the number -- and how is that decided (formula, etc.)?
That's a good one. It seems to offer to launch half full if you manually launch, but if you auto-launch it seems to load the thing up all the way. I'm sure every player has been bitten by that at least once. :HOT: ~SDC~

One enhancement that would be of major use to me is to make the Planets panel shorter so I can get to the ships in orbit while the list is displayed. I often peruse Planets list to see who's building what and to check morale. But if I want to launch a Transport (something I very often do to regulate world morale), I have to exit the Planet list, find the system, launch, then go back to the Planet list. :( Not what I would call ergonomically sound. ~SDC~

Some info: Level 1 on an Overlord 196 pts Level 2 on an Overlord 700 pts Level 3 on an Overlord about 1300 pts Level 1 on an Excalibur about 1000(?) pts Level 2 on an Excalibur about 2800 pts Level 1 on a 'Survey Ship' that has been upped to 258 HP by sucking up anomalies will be pretty close to 1000 pts So it seems to be tied much more to HPs than to ship class. ~SDC~
