Well, I do know how to fight the Dread Lords (although the new combat system in DA certainly scrapped a few favored tactics). The war against them on the Milky Way was never as hairy as your "Apocalypse" writeup - they never so much as took a planet - but for most of the time it felt like it was about to become that bad, particularly after they did begin fielding frigate fleets! Not helping matters was my lack of support from the other races. Only the Thalan consistently
Re: the miner - why March 1st? I also agree on the usefulness of HP anomalies for either the flagship or cargo survey ships. The flagship often winds up as powerful as an actual dreadnought when upgraded into a warship, and I find armed cargo hulls good for all sorts of service - early game ships of the line, starbase and transport hunters, and 'proactive planetary defenders' (place them into orbit, then have them pop out when enemy ships approach to make an attack).
Just added for dramatization and the 'feel' of the image of the 23rd century I'm going for. I actually considered writing some of them up... but I don't have that much free time. Part 1 is finished but undergoing revision... I'll have it up by Saturday at the latest.
Yeah, but that's a preexisting part of the mission. What I'm curious about is new wars breaking out between AIs when the DLs are around. I've actually never played the Dread Lords campaign all the way through. I probably should. I had a lot of fun (in a challenging, panicked, "I'm gonna die" sort of way) fighting them on the Milky Way map.
Colonies have a negative cash flow until they reach a population level where the taxes offset expenses. Thus, near-zero population colonies take longer to reach the "break-even" point, and the treasury is often limiting later in the colony rush phase. For this reason, I use the instant conversion trick only for choice mine anomalies (red or green), and only rarely at that. Still, you make a valid point that one
I've never seen that happen. I've had the proposal come up a few times, but I don't believe I've ever seen what you describe. Then again, it's possible I was only using the default transport at the time (which certainly doesn't gain 'legacy weapons'). In one of my several current games that proposal is actually in force right now; I could try experimenting with it.
I'm reasonably certain it's impossible; however I hardly ever make use of planetary spies to begin with as mine always seem to be nullified within a few turns. I also don't bother spying on minor races unless I have multiple spies to spare. Also, the question does not apply to DL, as the abstracted version of espionage makes it impossible to spy on a minor race at all.
One is that every time you load the game the AI gets a "production" turn. So if you loaded, saved and reloaded the AI could possibly have already rush bought 2 building on their home planet whereas you could only have built one. This is actually pretty minor. The more major thing is that the AI does know where the good stuff (resources and planets) are. Again this may seem like a big deal but in practice it's really not all that big. As long as you start as a race with stellar cartogra

I posted a similiar thread about the Dread Lords on Parade scenario in DL, but it died off, so I'm posting this separately. I started a DA game as Terrans on the Milky Way custom map today. I only bought DA and TOA recently and had never tried the map before. I noticed a number of unusual events, most of which involved the Dread Lords that started at the center of the map. 1. The DLs did not begin at war with all the races, and when they did go to war, they routinely made
Looking solid. I must say the subtitle throws me a little (love stories aren't my thing) but certainly there promises to be enough scenes of Dread Lords "blown to bits, killed, spindled, mutilated" and otherwise spectacularly terminated to make up for that. Certainly your writing skills are excellent. I have only two complaints - one personal and one nitpicky - which will nonetheless dominate my post because that's just the way I am. The nitpicky complaint - "Colonel Bradley" in the c
Does a colonist have to "take one for the team" and sacrifice himself to upgrade a colony ship to a constructor? Yes. You have to launch with a minimum of 1 colonist which represents 1M of population.
Actually, in my experience, no - but only in DL. When bringing up the "Ship Details" screen in DL (by clicking on the little "i" icon), it's possible to scroll to other ships you own with the arrows below the picture. By clicking through ships, you can s
Playing as the Terrans on DA I have had no problems with the Drath at all despite the fact that they are bribing wars among the other AIs like mad. Possible reasons for this: My high diplomacy (Super Diplomat + Majesty + Star Federation) My neutral alignment (not nearly as likely to make them mad as an evil one) The fact that they hate others much more then me (especially the Drengin and an evil-aligned custom opponent). I'm not sure how much help any of this m
Ah, yes, the mysterious phenomenon of "archaeologists" (as another forum denizen called them) - agents collecting info on a dead civilization. I too have experienced this, but unfortunately I don't know why it happens, although it's probably a bug.
Thanks. I've never been able to read those techs as I've never really played TOA; the decrease in starting funds from 5000 to 3000 bc is just too much of a pain to deal with. Topic for another thread, I suppose.

The mega events are a good idea in theory, but they were poorly implemented and highly exaggerated, making most of them game ending. Scaling would have a been a really good idea, Stardock... Generally, I vote for independents. *ahem* In my experience, the poster above put it best: like a lot of other things in this game, the "best" political party depends on your goals for your race. That said, Federalists and Technologists seem like the all-around best party with Universalists running third. The Mercantilists are probably worthless no matter what.
