You know, I have to say that the more I think about it, the more I think psionic beams are overpowered. Not just in comparison with 'normal' weapons, either, but compared to the Psionic Missile and the evil mass driver weapon (Psionic Shredder?), it's just far beyond either of them. If I intend to go evil, I will always focus on beam weapons regardless of what the AIs are using, and this is, in my view, a bad thing, as I like the rock-paper-scissors weapons system of GalCiv. In my current gam

I started my first game on the ultra simple easy level and the pirates are like unstoppable with massive fleets. What am I missing?
These pirates are a mega event. Mega events are random events that are intentionally destabilizing, and the pirates are one of the more extreme examples. It's generally recommended (or so I hear) that new pl

Whenever I attempt to start a scenario created with the TOA scenario editor, the game crashes to the desktop a few minutes into the "Loading" screen. This does not occur when starting a regular TOA sandbox game, and it doesn't occur with a custom scenario created the 'old-fashioned' way, by editing an existing scenario file (which was how you did it in DL and DA). The CTD occurs regardless of which custom scenario I use, but does not occur under any other circumstances. Debug Message:

I think if a minor race pops up mid-game they get a lot of technologies that the older races have already researched.
This is correct. Actually, I read a report of once of a minor race that popped up with "Beyond Mortality" (the one before tech victo

I actually have a couple of different "stock" configurations and any time I create a new set all I do is to zip up all the customracexml's files along with the particular prefs.ini file that select them and save them somewhere else and then I can restore a previously zipped up config and off I go. By including the prefs.ini file you don't even have to select

Shortly after I got Dark Avatar, I created a large number (7 or 8) of custom opponents, mostly to experiment with the feature. However, this is now causing something of a problem. I like to randomize which races I'm facing, as this both adds to my feeling of immersion and forces me to adapt more then preset opponents would. Unfortunately, whenever I face random AIs, around half of them are custom opponents. I would prefer to mostly play against the stock races, with the custom opponents only

You're not letting us down so long as you keep posting updates eventually ... so many of these have just been abandoned completely. Even just something like that last post reassures me that this AAR isn't dead yet.

Hmm, I'll need more information on that. Edit: Looks good; still has ads but they're far less annoying.[e digicons]k1[/e] karma.

Yes, I definitely use defense. Full-tech wars are uncommon enough in my games that the supposed inefficiency of high-level defenses doesn't matter much, and certainly at lower levels defense is invaluable. In my experience it is rare (though not totally unheard of) for the AIs to use all three types of weapons - typically there is one 'majority' and one 'minority' weapon type. I should note that I have never been interested in maximizing my gameplay and so I might be wrong about the e

Note to readers: I apologize for not posting on Saturday as promised, but I've run into a slight difficulty with the screenshots. Is it possible to upload them without using Imageshack or a similiar site? I find the advertisements on such sites very annoying and would rather not inflict them on my readers, to say nothing of myself if I ever want to reread this.
Curious though... Why do you run the game at such a low resolution? Your desktop is set to 1680 x 1050, but you run the game at 1024 x 768 in fullscreen mode? That alone can cause random problems with most video/monitor drivers.
Because, at this point, running it at any other resolution is immensely disorientating. I didn't know it was possible to change the resolution until some time after I got DL (I'm not exactly an expert on computers) and although I trie

I have begun noticing that, when I attempt to take a screenshot in DA, there have been numerous instances where it doesn't appear in the "Screenshots" folder. As an example, I attempted to take a screenshot of my first UP meeting in a recent game, but it didn't show up. In fact, only seven screenshots I took actually appeared in the folder. Here is the debug.err file: Debug Message: Version v2.01 Dark Avatar last updated on: Mon Nov 24 16:26:43 2008 Debug Message: Che
They're really good things to capture Unless you haven't yet built one; then you can't build another and you are stuck with where the AI put it.
Which is why I always make building my capitals a priority as soon as I research the respective tech. Also, I don't think you gain control of a race's Civilization Capital even if you capture all their plan

I wouldn't say I have a favorite type of victory per se , but my most common type of win is definitely a diplomatic victory, because I don't like to break alliances. The AI never breaks alliances outside of a few random events, and I feel as though I'm abusing the alliance system if I create alliances intending to backstab my 'allies' when the AIs don't do it. I don't play Metaverse games so I don't care that diplo wins score lower then military wins. That said, while some of my diplo

There's been some discussion on these forums of the possible factors, or lack thereof, influencing who an AI surrenders to, but as far as I know there's never been a discussion as to what causes an AI to surrender in the first place. In some cases, a race surrenders while still maintaining a strong military and economy, while in other cases they don't surrender at all, but fight to 'the last man' - quite a pain on gigantic all-abundant maps. Does anyone know what factors might go into

Thanks mambaman! This will be a pretty short AAR; I have about five or six segments planned. Originally I was going to write a longer AAR in this "history book" style for my first game ever as the Iconians, but I had too much trouble getting into the Iconian 'mindset' as they're one of the more alien races, so instead I created this YATA (Yet Another Terran AAR). The next post is finished and should go up soon. Edit: Thanks for the karma, too.

The title basicallly says it all. Playing on DA, most recent version (forget the number), I cannot create a custom ship style. Note: As I like creating mods and designing ships, if I can't use this feature, my enjoyment of the game will be harmed enormously. Edit: Never mind. It turned out you could only create a new ship style when editing or creating an opponent, not your own race.
