I just have a hard time deciding which options in the config are necessary and which are superfluous. The last one I attempted ended up killing my linux install (thank goodness /home was on a different partition). Easy for the experienced, daunting for the linux newb (me).

Much clearer now, Draginol, thanks. In brevia, appears it's the freeware followers rather than the developers where the problem lies.
Someday it would be great to get to that point! I've never met a disappointed Gentoo user, although I clearly don't have the skill to get there yet. Fedora Core 3 has been great so far, but I'm really thinking of trying to compile my own kernel for faster boot-up. Got to do some more reading... congrats, tho!
Yup, you can skin Macs, and yes, there are software tools to do it. ShapeShifter http://unsanity.com/haxies/shapeshifter by Unsanity LLC http://www.unsanity.com is a commercial program that enables skinning of the OSX environment, similar to what WindowBlinds does for Windows. Developer Brian Wilson was recently interviewed at skinyourscreen.com http://www.skinyourscreen.com>skinyourscreen.com regarding the Konfabulator/Dashboard issue, the recent pr
When I post updates on Stardock's software on my site, people leave comments like "Is there any site Stardock doesn't own", "Not you too!" or "Bloated." Extolling the virtues of the my ObjectDesktop subscription to them has branded my a Stardock sympathizer (although you wouldn't know it looking considering the treatment at WC). I get the feeling from the broad skinning community that Startdock is just another mega-corporation s
Many simply wish to support the little guy, the starting developer. Although new software may sometimes cause community individuals to jump ship, I think it's a gross overstatement to call this typical behavior. It's fun to see what innovations a new developer releases, but this doesn't automatically mean the community will jump ship. There are zealots, this is undeniable, but the thread seems to miss the other skinning compartment, those promoting
Try http://www.skinyourscreen.com and http://www.skinyourscreen.com/skinwiki as references!
While we're makin' requests: Frogboy, I'd love to see something on making themes resolution independent. I've always had trouble trying to get the different elements (taskbar, system-tray) to line up next to eah-other and play nice so that they'll work on whatever resolution screen the theme is thrown on. There have been several threads on this over the years, but it would be great to finally have a definitive explanation of how to accomplish this (h
Draginol, you don't mind if I input this in SkinWiki, do you? Great information, would love to add it. XAML too, again, with your permission. http://www.skinyourscreen.com/skinwiki
Unsanity rules! I've got an interview scheduled with the developers for http://www.skinyourscreen.com - Great bunch of guys!

The notion that there simply are not many PhD's being produced in America or that they are on the decline is far from the truth. It may be relevant specifically to the IT field, but Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology, and Neurology doctorates are currently oversaturating the marketing. I'm only a 2nd year Ph.D. student, and when I started it generally took 1 post-doctoral fellowship in order to land yourself a tenure-track position a
Very revealing observation you make, Gene! Give everybody the opportunity and tools to express opinions and they most certainly will. It's invigorating to check out this thread and see some actual objectivity! (thanks!)

SkinWiki http://www.skinyourscreen.com/skinwiki is another free Wiki (yup, anybody can edit it) dedicated solely to skinnable software and the tools and techniques for making skins. WE NEED CONTRIBUTORS!!! BTW: we're using exactly the same software as Wikipedia/MetaWiki - no learning curve whatsoever. SkinWiki's been up for over a month and has most of the categories, rules, and even software titles already in place - we just need contributo
Again, I'll pop in a plug for SkinWiki- a free encyclopedia for skinning that ANYBODY can edit or contribute to. http://www.skinyourscreen.com/skinwiki
Really interesting take on the situation Who would have thought Microsoft and Novell would be the ones to open up portability like that?
Great proggie- it's like running the ObjectBar popup without loading all of ObjectBar. Love the popups (right-click menus) in LiteStep, but the inclusion of Tasks and systray in the LiteStep popups isn't as seemless as in Right-click. Great use of Fitz's rules of interface design
Had tried an earlier version under a free offer at DevArt- Installation went well on a (then) new laptop. Unfortunately they require you to buy all your software through the Linspire organization, unlike other distributions of Linux that will install software for free from source through a simple-command line operation. It's all a balance of cost, however, and for a non-technical user Linspire really was easy to adapt to, especially for cross-over u
Very good read! Thanks for the recent links on other OS's, it's fun to see what other environments are up to periodically.
...but thanks for the idea of using MediaWiki! I'm now integrating it into the existing system for its tremendous flexibility. The beauty of open-source
The whole site is not the Wiki. SkinWiki is an integral element to Skinyourscreen.com, a part of a larger picture. MediaWiki is a standalone Wiki/CMS, while SkinWiki is integrated into an existing e107-based CMS backbone.
Skinyourscreen.com Link has put together a new resource for skinners, SkinWiki Link . SkinWiki is an open-source initiative to reference skinnable software, the individual skinnable elements within the software, and any tools, tips or tricks that
Have been waiting for this for a LONG time Will be putting together a review of skinnable VWM's soon. Was going to include the old BandVWM because of its wallpaper changing capabilities, but this is much, much better. Kudos to the programmers!
