One thing I noticed is that it appears you get more tech picks if you create a custom race. You should also be able to add techs to the canned races. In addition, regardeless of what techs I chose to start with

Hmm. It claims to be crashing in the formatted text code, so that doesn't give me a real clear indication of what's going on, but it's crashing fairly early based on the debug.err file. Do you have the latest drivers from the ATI website?

I'm starting to think you're psychic. Only occasionally. Although, there have been several times where I've answered the door before the person rang the doorbell, without having seen them walking up to the door. But it's always someone I know is coming

I'm not sure if the S3 will work. I seem to remember people having trouble with the S3 when The Political Machine came out, and GalCiv2 uses a lot more 3D features than The Political Machine does. If it's the one that only has 8 MB of VRAM, it definitely won't work. We haven't finalized the minimum requirements for GC2, but I think that they will be something like this: 1 GHz CPU, 256 MB of RAM, a video card that supports DirectX 9.0c with 32 MB VRAM, Windows 98 or

This was a short week because of the holiday weekend, but I only had one main feature to get done for the week: starbases. I'm using temporary graphics for the starbases until the art team has the models ready on Monday, but I have the interface all hooked up. I don't know if starbases will be in the next build of beta 2, though, since the starbase bonuses affect a

Not all of the races in GC/GC2 are mammals so all the females wouldn't have breasts.

Duckness, without seeing your laptop specs, I can't say anything for certain, but you might be able to get drivers that would let you play on your laptop here: www.omegadrivers.net

Actually, I know what he means about the home planet changing. The save game wasn't saving which planet was the homeworld planet, so it would just randomly get one of your colonized planets to use as the home planet. I've fixed that for the next update. But I would like you to follow the directions in my post "All Beta Testers Read this" in regards to the first bug.

Although I find the idea that betas are not for "playing" a bit silly. Besides the literally countless game beta tests I've been involved in, I QA software for a living. In order to "test” a game, you inherently must play it as that is the purpose of the product being tested. You are right, you do have to play it to test it. Howev

Tooltips were one of the last things that we did in GC1 and it will probably be the same here. There's so much that changes on the interface from the beginning of the beta until the release version that makes it easier to wait until closer to release to do tooltips. That being said, the Society team is currently working on getting tooltips into their alpha of Society. Once they have it working, I could easily plug it into GC2. If one or more of you would like to volunteer

You'll remember from last week's blog that I was working on a new algorthim to pick the starting planets for the major civilization to improve the loading time. I believe that I have found a good solution. I started a game with a gigantic galaxy using the old code and it took 2.68s to pick planets for 10 major races, which was surprisingly fast as the shortest time
